They are now.
They weren't when Kelly took over. Although they were still more talented than us.
But no one's asking for that anyway. We're asking that our coach doesn't call for 4th down punts like his head is full of rocks.
That's what I'm saying! It really is remarkable that the same coaches who go batsh!t insane over turnovers so willingly give the ball to the opposition on 4th down.
lol - Long is a true freshman surrounded by talent-challenged players (for the most part) and an OC who is completely over his head. Give the kid a break. The next good SU QB isn't in the program.
We have a lot of average QBs, backs and receivers.
If Shafer thinks we're going to win with players no one has ever heard of, he's in for a big surprise.
I'm guessing he could actually hit from 60. Not a high probability, but I suspect he could. We have 4th and 3 at the NCS 37. That means a 54 yard FG attempt IN A DOME. Cole made a 50 yarder in this game and similar ones in other games. What is his limit 53?
Actually, if you think about it - one might just as well throw a longish ball down inside the 10. You could throw it up for grabs. Might be caught. If not - nine times out of ten, the DB intercepts it rather than knocks it down. Just need to train the receivers to tackle the interceptor immediately (inside the ten). Win - win.It really is remarkable that the same coaches who go batsh!t insane over turnovers so willingly give the ball to the opposition on 4th down.
But what is not to like about a FG in a game like this? IN A DOME! A FREAKIN DOME!I'm guessing he could actually hit from 60. Not a high probability, but I suspect he could.
Even if you don't like the field goal try, geez, run a play that you think can get you the first down.
EXACTLY!!! It's stuff like this that just prove Shafer isn't the right man to lead SU. SU should have went for it there, the punt is worthless. Hardnose this, Hardnose that...at the end of the day Shafer talks like Tarzan but coaches like Jane!We made a play at the end of the half. We made a play to begin the half. Our defense kept the momentum alive. The offense advanced the ball in to NC State territory. We got in to a manageable 4th in a place where a field goal isn't agreat option and a punt doesn't do anything for you. We get NC State freaked out and they burn a timeout.
And then we punt.
From that point on, we handed control of our own destiny to the opponent and to chance.
Ridiculous. It's not a coincidence that we weren't able to keep it up. We ask too much of limited players. We can't expect our defense to stop the opponent on every drive. We can't expect that our offense will get the same field position we once had. We can't play the field position game. We can't play content.
And once again we give our fans a deflating game at home in the Dome.
Shafer is an idiot. Punting on 4th and 5 at the 37 is just so stupid. You don't even need to think about it, just accept that people with brains already figured it out. It's like he's trolling mathOttoinGrotto said:We made a play at the end of the half. We made a play to begin the half. Our defense kept the momentum alive. Straight out of bill cubits bookChip said:Not only that, we have regular offensive momentum, good field position, chance to really separate ourselves, and what do we do? We reach into the bag of tricks of course! Pitch it around 3 times then back to the QB, because with today's OL, we had all kinds of time to throw the ball. Terrible loss. 3 win season. Might as well give Wilson next week. It's all just one big audition at this point anyway. Let's try a 3rd playcaller too.
If BC didn't give him a gift win last year in that final home game, SU doesn't make a bowl and Shafer would be packing his bags now. The fact Addazio was calling sideline plays that stopped the clock when all he had to do was run up the middle and kill the clock and let time expire, is the ONLY reason Shafer won't get fired after this season. This thread is why I have been done with hcss since the Louisville game. His teams have a lot of trouble beating teams with equal talent or better. He is not going to be the coach that takes us to the next level and we are probably going to have two more sucky years after this one until he proves it to his bosses. I really hope we can recover from three more years of mediocre ness.
My main hope is that Gross is out and a new AD wants his own coach.

I can't believe I have to listen to meatheads talk about gimmick offenses that fifty schools run.Chip said:The worst part about the punt was that we tried, yet again, another trick. NC State, of course, calls timeout. Shafer spends the timeout arguing with the refs about whether they got the timeout in time (which is pointless). But he had time to do it because his decision was made. It was either run that trick play, or punt. Not once did he actually think about the offense actually trying to get those yards. 7 figures per year. What a country.
