1. He's 4 for 4 in passing with no INTs. That's got to be an off-the-charts QB rating!
2. He is averaging 12 yards per carry!
3. It's not like he's a true freshman.

Seriously, it seems that Lester is implementing an offensive "system." Kind of like the old Deleone days where it didn't matter so much who the QB was. The requirements were that the QB be mobile, could run the option, and could throw reasonably well and not turn the ball over.

Perhaps it's not the end of the world (as we knew it).

Wilson has a strong arm. He can throw... his issue is in reading the coverage. I recall that Trudo was calling the coverage for Dungey. If we need him why not use Wilson and have Trudo call coverage.

First we had Hunt calling the blocking assignments for the OL

When he went down, that responsibility fell to Trudo.

When he went down, I am not sure if Emerich or Dungey took on this responsibility. I will assume Dungey did, because he got hurt and Emerich didn't.

It is the Curse of the Calling of the Blocking Assignments and it has taken three of our top players in the first three games. Maybe/Probably/Okay, Really Not Sure But Let's Go With It For the Sake of the Story.

Anyway, Trudo will surely call out the assignments this week. Until...

Seems he's not just a runner either. Lester had mentioned the 3 perfect bombs he dropped in against 1st team D. Sounds like his arm strength is as good as (or close to) Wilson's, but more accurate. He's shown poise. If the OL gives him time we may see some long shots to Ish and Bris. Great that Ish, Trudo and Parris are back. Will make it easier on him. But hopefully Eric (and Erv) return for USF.

We gave up over 520 yards to CMU, and had 1 (or 0?) first downs in the second half.

I'm all about positive thoughts here, and I'll be rooting like crazy of course, but I think we get walloped.

Really a shame we (very likely) won't have Dungey. Wouldn't matter, but would still be more fun to watch.

Considering Mahoney has a full week taking 1st team practice snaps, who knows maybe we can get more than 18 yards and 1 first down in a half. ;)

to be fair lester said last night in his interview that he ran the ball all three series Mahoney had the ball to get his feet wet

Anybody could throw 3 perfect bombs against our defense...:(

I think that's the general consensus. But that's no fun. Playing with house money, have fun.

Turf monster dressed as the grim reaper.

It didn't matter who played QB in DeLeone's offense?

Did I hallucinate 1999 through 2004?

The NFL & McNabb changed Deleone. After he came back we saw very little option. We were a pro style O during his 2nd stint as OC. Yes our QBs were not great runners but IMO he wouldn't have been 1987-1996 Deleone even if he did. Also during that time Option Os were seen as being too old school which I am sure hurt recruiting. That could have been another factor in the change.

That all being said you are right that it did matter who was QB. There is a reason why we had dips in between McPherson, Graves, and McNabb.

We've got a great team coming in, we'll have a huge tailgating scene, the dome will be loud, we'll see a whole bunch of inspiring kids including a walk-on QB & exciting freshman runner (plus a Heisman Trophy candidate from LSU), and we've got the makings of our best team in a while. What's not to love? Mahoney is a great story and we may struggle mightily against LSU but it'll still be a great event. I'm hoping Lester & Shafer will have a game plan that will provide some sign of life. Our special teams have been good and we've created a lot of turnovers, so I hope all segments of the team can contribute. In tribute to the great Yogi Berra, "It ain't over till it's over".

cant wait

Watch Mahoney's HUDL videos. He can lead receivers on 30-40 yard routes - his arm is strong enough to do that. He's the closest thing to Dungey that we have right now and hopefully he gets the opportunity to play the whole game. I think it's important for continuity with this offensive system. Putting Wilson in limits things and that's not going to help Dungey when he comes back.

This is his high school video:

Very Dungey esque.
