Hofstra Postgame

The bottom line is we don’t have A GUY. What I mean is we don’t have one guy who can create an easy shot for himself or others. Hofstra has a DUDE who can get 20+ and attracts the defense to get his teammates open.

We’re missing an alpha, and it showed during that last possession. We have a lot of decent pieces but we need a go to guy. Kyle is a stud, but center requires capable and willing passers who can get in the lane. This team has bad guard play.

We are missing beta to zed as well

NG stunk. The coaching in 2nd half stunk. Refs stunk. Can’t lose that game. But they did. And there’s a lot of blame to go around. Can’t wait til 4 mins left to start coaching

George must have been sick. He wasn't driving when he was in there, and Autry sat him for most of the end of the game.

The irony is games like these happen sometimes, but we are so beat down by the last ten years that it will take months of good results to even get hopeful. And the attendance is going to be atrocious.
They happen to good teams who shake them off, beat some quality opponents, and make the tourney anyway.

Sadly it’s becoming clear that we’re not a good team. We’re likely where we’ve often been most of the past decade — a mediocre team that won’t have any real chance of making the dance.

This team was totally unprepared to play against a zone defense. Yes, we're a poor perimeter shooting team but it was very apparent they had no idea how to attack a zone. That's a coaching failure.
During the game they said Cuse is LAST in Division 1 in free throw percentage. Last of 362 schools. That's just inexcusable. It cost them a game today ... 9-16 from the line in a 1 pt loss.

Bad loss. This is the type of loss, at home yet, that keeps you out of the tourney.
Sad.

What? Autry wasn't brought back because of some fear Anthony or White or anyone else wouldn't come. That is just not true.
That would make more sense than claiming he had the coaching ability to field a decent team. If he wasn’t brought back to keep the top level players then I’d argue there was no reason for him to be back

Donnie Freeman better play next game, or he has quit on this team.

Hofstra played really well. They hit a ton of difficult shots. This wasn’t a complete disgrace. Kiyan was absolutely mauled on that play. But also:
-George was a complete disaster on both ends. He’s a huge disappointment. He was torched on d.
-We don’t run a competent offense. We acted like we had never seen a zone before. We don’t move without the ball. We don’t move the ball and just stand there with it, letting the shot clock go down. Nothing changes. Late in the game we were not prepared with a good play for the last shot.
-The White technical was a complete game changer. He frankly deserved to get one earlier. This kind of stuff has been a problem since Red was the coach. You just don’t see this happen to other programs.
-JJ did nothing after his early scoring. He can’t shoot from outside or distribute and he has never learned to shoot with his left hand which bit him in the arse. Like George, he got toasted on defense.
-We built a roster with 2 rebounders and one is hurt. And we can’t shoot free throws.

Giving up 12 of 18 from three AT HOME is fireable in itself, regardless of the multitude of problems with the staff. What are we even doing here? There was a time where games were won before they were played because of home court advantage.
Not for a long time. A guy that needs to share in the blame is JB. He ran us down by selfishly staying too long. Of course we didn't hire the right replacement. That is the largest part of the blame pie. The very largest. But we weren't Syracuse for a long time.

Too many threes. And BTW, it was a 1-3-1 zone, Devo, not a 2-3.
You don't want the entry pass to the foul line, because they have a defender there.
Against a 1-3-1, you attack from the baseline, behind the wing defenders.
