Hopkins featured in NYT

Well he's got two boys who are of high school age. Will he want to uproot them? There are all pieces of the puzzle to work out. I'm in the camp where I'd absolutely LOVE for Hopkins to be the next coach after JB finally retires. I just think it's wishful thinking.

Everything that is beyond us hiring one of our current assistants is wishful thinking at this point. Just hoping those wishes are granted. Don't think the other programs that are at the Elite level that our resources place us at would be likely to hire an assistant with no head coaching experience. Think UNC after Dean would be the closest comparison and it sort of worked with Bill Guthridge but he was a lot older than our assistants.

That's a fair, measured response. I'm of the mindset that if family brought him back there, family will keep him there. Of course you're right. Just because I don't see it happening doesn't mean it won't.
isn't his wife's family from Syracuse?

Hop coming back is not 0%.

I read an article in the Seattle Times a couple of days ago that said the UW AD has already twice renegotiated his contract (after last year and again after the regular season this year). They are desperate to keep him. He may not be worth the buyout and salary by the time Boeheim hangs it up.

Was Hop this popular on the board after he went 4-5 as the fill in coach? I can't recall... ;)

but seriously folks, I will never say never but can't see him coming back to SU, hope I am wrong. Coach in waiting just doesn't work out most of the time, and I don't think it will end up working it's way back to us this time

Oh please. If you're a top dog in college hoops that buyout is nothing.

You'd be surprised. I was looking over a list of coaches' salaries and they have the buyouts for the state schools at least. We're talking $16 million for a bunch of top names. I think in most contracts the buyout declines every extra year you stay but still...that's a lot of money. Ironically, you might be better off financially making a run at a long-established coach like Jay Wright than a up-and-comer even if Wright's annual salary is higher.

It's called prognosticating. You should try it some time. Six months ago I posted an article on the board from The Athletic that was a LONG Hopkins profile. At the mods request, I took it down. (Copyright and all that). If you read that article, I'd have a hard time believing that you would place the odds that Mike Hopkins comes back to Syracuse at more than 5%.

It profiled him as incredibly happy to be in Seattle, he has family ties there. He's setting down roots. Now is there a chance? Sure. There's always a chance for anything, except taxes and death. But IMO is he ever coming back? NO.
HAK, no one has an idea if he’ll ever make it back to Syracuse, and that’s the point. He’s had a good start in a lowly rated PAC12, but that could change. Or the “happy wife, happy life” factor could kick in if the missus decides she wants to be closer to her family. Who knows?
Hence the sharp reaction, in that your initial “prognostication”, was not that at all. It was an absolute statement expressed w/ certainty, & w/ no qualifiers... like you knew something no one else did. IMO.

His most immediate family is from Liverpool.

But his father, who is battling dementia, lives in Washington state.

That’s fair. Far too often on this board I tend to make absolute statements. Sometimes they get me into trouble. I think I should probably stop doing that, right orange79?

Also the Athletic article, which was incredible, made it clear it was about his dad and coaching while he could still (sort of) remember his son was a coach. Things change over time. I think we should let him do the best job he can and if we're lucky enough one day, he can come back home a successful winner. If he wants to stay, we shouldn't blame him either.

I think his parents are still in Southern California but now it's easier for them and for him to see each more regularly.
I worked with his Dad about 12 years ago was a great person ,very sincere, and the company was in LaVern CA ie Southern CA, thought I had heard he moved back to the Seattle area when Mike moved out there, but not sure.

Its also a ticking time bomb located on one of the nastiest fault lines on earth, next to an active volcano, and right next door to a MEGA volcano... No thanks Ill take snow

With the jet stream all the ash will be flying east.

Wow,you mean Hopkins while being interviewed about his new job didn’t say “I hate it here. These morons don’t even realize I’m biding my time with a head coaching paycheck until Jim Boeheim steps down?” What a great find on your article.

He’s coming back. Deal with it.

My oldest Daughter went to college in Seattle. My company has done development work for Microsoft since the mid 90's. Syracuse is a nice city and i bleed orange but Seattle is one of the best cities in the world. There is simply no comparison.
The Market, SAM, B Royal to so many amazing venues and neighborhoods. Set on the Pacific Ocean Seattle is a Jewel of a City. Add in the fact that Hop is home with his family and is already a legend at the U and i cant think of one reason why he would ever leave. Hops ship sailed when JB decided he wanted to keep coaching.
Im happy for him as he was a huge part of our Success.
I've been to Seattle and I was not impressed. Much better cities throughout the US.

Look...he may come back and he may not. And I want him to. But he got put into a terrible place by this current AD and is now making the best of it. Mike is a class act and will never say anything negative about SU or JB (who he considers a dad).

If he does come back, it will be completely on his terms and not Wildhack’s.

Hop could easily come back. In his interview on ESPN he fondly mentioned Syracuse multiple times. Sure that's where most of his experience is from so it makes sense but it was also all positive. I'm sure he still has a strong attraction to SU.

Yeah Seattle is nicer than Syracuse. It's also nicer than Durham, and Lawrence Kansas, and probably Lexington and Louisville and a million other places. The attractiveness of a city is not always one of the top factors when coaches or players make decisions.

And I think I read he had cousins there and that is some kind of tie to the area. Well, maybe it's just me, but i have cousins in lots of places. Let's just say that "cousins living there" is not necessarily a guaranteed plus when considering where to live.

And remember, the PAC 12 is falling behind in the college arms race. The network is a major disappointment. The big programs have all fallen apart. It's not the ACC, and frankly it's nowhere near it and never will be.

Maybe he comes back maybe he doesn't. But nothing is ever off the table when it comes to coaching jobs.

This is the reason he’d come back to Syracuse. The PAC-12 is a disaster and while it will improve it’ll never be an elite CBB conference like the ACC or Big10. Our basketball program is an elite brand name and will always be better funded than UW’s because of the revenue that the Dome, which will get a major renovation, brings in.

I think the most intriguing question is who wins a NC first...Hopkins at Washington of JB at SU before buddy graduates. I'm hoping JB has another final four run but think Mike has an incredible group of recruits coming in...
