Surprised no ones mentioned this specifically yet. I agree with Nikos story on it with Niko being pretty strong on the message that Rex was trying to send (tried to find and link his channel 3 story but it doesn't appear to be up).

And I can tell you from discussions within the coaching ranks that this opinion is the predominant one held by the majority of coaches (well at least the ones I remain connected to throughout the ranks and the ones they talk too.... when this type thing happens, like with everyone else, all love to chew the fat on the latest gossip and stories).

Edit: oops missed a mention in the Marrone not a Jet thread.

He pissed in the soup.

Jags getting backlash.

Will be interesting...

Rex should worry about being a good HC before he worries about stirring the pot.

Would love it if Marrone came out and ragged on Rex for his foot fetish. Creepy SOB.

Keepin throwin shots at a coach that was 3-1 on ya Rex. I know some Buffalo guys like this pickup, but, I can't stand Rex. Great Defensive guy whose name means more than it should because of his father. Affable fella and all, how many times can you listen to a great press conference after a sub par performance though? I actually hope he succeeds because I want the Bills to succeed, even as a Giants fan. I think there's something to be said for a successful small market franchise.

Prima meet Donna...Couldn't happen to a "nicer" guy although it would be interesting to see just how much he knows about running an offense when he is solely responsible for play calling.

I think Rex gets too much crap. He's 50-52 overall and 4-2 in the postseason. Just because the guy values defense more than offense doesn't mean he neglects the offensive side. His first two seasons he had good teams and proved he was capable of winning; his last four years he had average and mediocre teams. At the professional level coaches have to rely on management to get them good teams. Great coaches always have great players.

In his last 4 seasons he's 26-38 with 0 playoff appearances. It's his job to have a better than average or mediocre team.

just because he didn't have final say on personnel decisions doesn't mean he had no say at all.

Here ya go. I'm no Marrone lover , don't care one way or the other, but DM was doing well in his first two seasons, considering Buffalos past. Then the owner hires a guy with this record to take them to the promised land? Don't get it. What exactly happened with all this extension stuff in reading about DM here? Did he ask and was refused? Did he ask and was offered? Don't know. But why hire this a$$clown to take his place?

True enough except for leaving $20 million in cap money on the table.

There's that. I think Rex in Buffalo could be a beautiful thing, if he can have some success early on. I really do. He's a great fit, a small market team needs a coach like him, not some robot like Marrone.

My concern for sexy rexy is how he will be able to handle living in wing-land with his stomach surgery. He is bound to be plump once again.

Rex did a good job at firing up Buffalo fans. That's what an opening presser is all about. That's why the loyalty comments, that's why the Patriots comments.

you don't have to go back very far to find a bills coach who gained 60 lbs shortly after moving to buffalo

Agreed. All very confusing.

And it does seem that Doug miscalculated the reaction to his decision to opt out.

The notion that he quit on his team seems to be the prevailing notion - even if it is not entirely true or fair.

Unintended consequences - ouch.

Marrone took a few shots at Rex this season in the form of beating up on the Jets 2X. I guess they are even when it comes to taking shots.

it's a bet that the jets roster sucks and the bills roster is pretty good

pegula didn't want to hire a new coach. what were his choices? retreads or first timers. pegula said in the press conference that since he thinks the team is close and mature, he wanted to go with experience. it implies that if the bills had more time to grow as a team, maybe he would've gone with a younger coach presumably with more upside

"We went into this process very open-minded, the four of us. There was a lot of arguing, a lot of debating, which is always healthy. It is not a sign of dysfunction. We did not know what kind of, or who our coach was going to be. Is it going to be a young new mind? Is it going to be a veteran coach? But, as the process, and maybe should I use Canadian for our hockey (fans), the process. As it continued, we decided that where our team is right now, we were basically the only team looking for a head coach who did not fire their head coach the year before. So we decided that, after talking, that maybe we should go the veteran route, and because of where our team is."

If they thought Rex Ryan was head and shoulders better than any of these young guys, he wouldn't have talked about young new minds. They must think that some young new minds could end up being better than Rex to even bring them up but they like their chances with Rex short term.

Sounds like Spiller took at shot at Doug as well (or Hackett) when talking about possibly being reunited with Gailey:

"He's not going to embarrass you," Spiller said. "He's going to treat you like an NFL player. He's not going to baby you. He's not going to treat you like you're in college. He's going to treat you like you're a grown man. He's going to give you respect."

It's pretty simple: Doug opted out thinking he had the Jets job, and he likely did have it if there wasn't the avalanche of bile that came out. Not saying he doesn't deserve that bile, but that's what happened. He has his $4 mil so he can sit back and let things quiet down, but not sure when he will get an NFL HC gig again, could be a while.

yep.

he got cocky about having lots of friends in the nfl even those friends aren't the ones hiring and paying

you're right about that last part. My phones been blowing up the past week...LOL.
i bet.

ive just been speaking with media types who cant get anyone to go on record, but the ownership side is that they feel that 1 of their own has been burned and theyve been beaten, no matter how it unfolded...and they dont like it.

blackball city.

Seems pretty dumb to think that wouldn't be a very possible reaction.
