I thought it was an obvious call at the time. Our defense was clearly cooked at that point in the game and didn't appear like it would be stopping UVA anytime soon. Did we plan to keep trying to match TD's with them? It seemed like such a perfect an obvious time to go for 2, that I just assumed we would and was hoping we didn't do it off a fake field goal and just went for it straight up - seriously, why can't we just roll Dungey out of the pocket? He can run and throw, and seems to have great instincts and a knack for making the right play at the right time. Think about it...if he was the opposing QB, we'd be crapping ourselves with a QB like him on the other side, going for 2 to win the game. Did anyone ask this question at the presser or since, and if so was it met with any kind of response?

*I apologize if this has been discussed this week and I missed it. Despite being one of the voices of reason that was actually calling to keep Shafer in the post-game meltdown, I have been banned since Saturday, I presume for saying that he's not smart(see his numerous dumb presser comments) and coaches conservatively though I said it more bluntly than that (and yes even with that I still want to keep him, but he's got things he can get better at). I guess you have to shovel salt potatoes and Genny Cream Ale down your throat with moderators at tailgates to be able to say anything with a remote edge to it around here.

Yes, it has been addressed: "When you get your team you can make that call."

That wasn't referring to that.

He said he thought about it and thought the D would hold.

Thanks for the reply.

I realize the D came up big with some huge stops in OT against CMU but....did anybody else think we had a prayer of stopping UVA at that point? They were rolling, and we were spent. Our only hope seemed to be if they committed a holding penalty or something on 1st down, and then dropped the inevitable 3rd and long completion. We had not demonstrated anything good in a long, long time that showed that we could do something positive to stop them.

The tailgates have had salt potatoes? Christ, I love salt potatoes and have been to 5 tailgate get togethers and not once have I seen them. That's it...no $10 till I see the spuds. (probably those Moderators are hoarding them!).

We absolutely should have gone for two and that is not hindsight, I was screaming it at my TV like a mental patient. You are forced to go for 2 in the 3rd OT if you get a TD first and our D was gassed. Go for it and get the win or loss right there. Love Shafer, hated the decision. Not hardnosed.

Precisely. In my view, a somewhat disconcerting belief as it was obvious that our D (in that moment) wouldn't be able to make a stop on their own. Really, the only hope at that time was for UVA to make a significant boneheaded play/error handing us the win. In my opinion, it was a 'crossroads' moment for SS, and he should've chosen the path least travelled.

I was at the game...thought about the NCSt game in 97 or so...yeah we should've. Particularly we were going on offense 1st again in the 3rd...

I really have no problem with the decision there, because anything can happen and you'd really hate yourself for losing a game that way. Bad snap, helmet on the ball, all kinds of ways that UVA could have fallen apart.

His quote is why I rarely listen to coaches anymore. Meant to inspire the troops, so I get it. But to say anyone could have had confidence that the D would get a stop without a ton of luck, come on.

Agreed, I would have been impressed had we gone for two but I was OK with going to the 3rd OT.

The only coach worth listening to in his pressers is Belichick. It's like a Broadway show. So many people aren't in on the joke, I feel bad for them.
