TD has tons of potential but he had issues with pocket awareness and avoiding a rush. I understand that the rush was at times on him before he caught the snap, not much he can do there.

But there were many plays where he had some time, and wasn’t able to feel the pressure and get away and extend the play. He got better as the year went on, but still below average imo.

The question is what can be done to improve this? My thoughts:

1) more quick throws called by the oc
2) a better running game will help too

The real question is what training does TD do over the next 8 months? Are there virtual reality goggles for training aids? Are there drills he can do on the field? Film study must be a part too, right?
Do you know a QB with this problem who has improved significantly over time? I’m looking for a reason to be optimistic here. We need TD to be solid next year.

First thing we need is to get plays run faster. This is supposed to be a fast offense, and last year it wasn't.

Watch Joe Burrows. Use athleticism to extend plays and throw. The kid has wheels. Use them more.

Pocket awareness, decision making, and more reps with receivers. On the latter point, “getting on the same page” with receivers seemed an issue.

Coaching. Im sure Martin is a solid coach but a top flight QB coach is critical. Im hopeful that Dino is going to shuffle his staff and that the QB coaching position is one of his moves.

I would like to see him work on his peripheral/field vision. It appeared to me that even when given time to throw, he tended to lock on his primary receiver (usually Jackson) and miss guys who were totally open. To take this a step further, the most savvy QBs will use their eyes to misdirect the pass coverage away from the intended target (TB12 is a master at this).

First off, I thought Tommy played well overall last season. I expect the game to slow down for him with last year's experience in hand, and hopefully better line play. Less jail break rushes will allow him to focus down the field, and I'm hoping he picks up those open guys more regularly. If he can do that his level of play will increase dramatically, imo.

The OL improving is going to be big for him. He needs to improve his progressions and pocket awareness. Again I think not having a former QB as his position coach hurts. Kirk Martin is a nice guy I'm sure and good football coach...but he should not be QB Coach for an ACC program.

My biggest complaint about Tommy this year was not the inability to avoid the rush and extend the play but what he did after that which was essentially...nothing. There were many times he escaped a sack and rolled right giving himself and the receivers tons of time to adjust and get open and nothing EVER happened in these situations. Definitely should be a point of emphasis for both him and the receivers going into next year.

I'm really not that worried about Devito. I think he was one of the bright spots of the team this year. Could he have had a better season... for sure. But if you want to lay the blame of 2019 at his feet, that's kind of silly.

I expect him to have a big year in 2020, with one big caveat. The o-line is improved and more consistent. If that happens our entire team is going to be better. Couple that with a new DC who didn't allow the worst defensive performances in the history of SU and that's a recipe for at least a winning season.

Obviously, the OL wasn't good last season but TD's inability to make the correct read at the LOS was huge. It's one of the reasons the offensive ran at a significantly slower pace.

In many cases, I think TD's ineptness at the LOS effected the OL play rather than the other way around. The OL wasn't good enough to protect TD when in obvious passing situations (mostly 3rd and longs) and he rarely identified the "hot receiver" which led to sacks.

For those that seem to think there is a lot of "coaching" that goes on, with the exception of Spring and Fall camp kids are on their own to practice and work out. They can be given direction on what they need to work on but it's up to them to follow up in the off season.

It seems like they didn’t go fast at all when he was QB and that’s supposed to be one of our big advantages. Is it possible that he still doesn’t get the playbook or reads? There were times when the offense went a lot faster when Welch was in.

Not sure that TD is to blame here. It seemed to me that DB decided to slow the pace of play because of the issues with the OL and to keep our D off the field.

I don’t know... either a qb has the intangibles or he doesn’t. To quote Clayton Forrester when he discovered the dead Martian, “We’re all praying for a miracle.”

Absolutely possible.

Welch doesn't have near the talent that TD possesses but the offense seemed to operate more efficiently during his two appearances.

The question is, can he improve the things that need improving? Is that stuff that gets better with experience and coaching or is it more innate? The answer is yes. What percentage of it is innate?

Was thinking the same thing, we slowed down dramatically, Ive heard all the excuses from O-Line to whatever but Im still confused on how Dino can run at speed year 1 and slow it down dramatically in Year 4.

The quick no huddle offense may or not be the key to success on offense but then again what is our offensive plan? Are we not recruiting the type of players to run "Dinos" Offense

Another concerning thing for TD last year was he locked onto one receiver, the second he had to look at Plan B or C he panicked.....this to me is one of the keys, don't get locked in and be prepared for the secondary guys on the play call......maybe using the TE more with some dump downs will help.....I certainly liked what we saw from Benson last year, would love to see more plays involving him....and more snaps for Cam Jordan

We're going to have to see what happens with his receivers.

Jackson was his go to guy last year.

Legacy is right. It's up to TD to get the practice facility and work.

TD meets with Dino and they agree on a long term plan and which WR's are going to be there for 2020. They meet at least three times a week and TD throws to all of them at their pre - destined positions - slot, WR right, left, etc. Set up some blocking bags to simulate rushers and work on throwing to everyone manuvering skills and footwork. Have grad assistant or two keep the time with stopwatches to see how fast the ball gets to TD and TD gets the play run. The third grad assistant runs film to review after the at days practice.

Having a go to guy isn't bad but when the go to is covered or falls/slips you have to have options - react and be able to hit the option instead. Also the plays need to be run over and over so they are automatic. And, you can't quit. Stay at this until summer workouts.

Know the plays: You can't have a play called from the side or quick huddle and have TD throw long in the middle where the receiver was supposed to be only to find the receiver made his break and went left to the end zone corner. Every one has to be on the same page.

Also, TD has to read the D quickly as well – eyes left and right all covered - I am rolling right, I see room to run so no hesitation, run and get the first down. TD isn't a snail he's got some speed he needs to use it then slide avoiding any targeting. He and the receivers have a lot of work ahead of them.

They all have to make time for this. I hope they get to the facility and get it done. It's going to pay off if they do.

I think everyone being healthy over the summer and into preseason will make a difference. Dino from the jump was not happy with lack of time TD had with most of the WR's and their health in general
