How Is SU Thought of in the ACC?

It must be easy as an opposing coach preparing for SU. The newspapers even know how to gameplan. I'm not sure there is a more predictable team in college basketball.

- Zone 100% of the time
- The best guard on the team will play less than half the game
- Short bench
- Press only if down by 15 points or more
- Coach's son will play more minutes than anyone else
- Good ball movement equals open threes
- Pound the boards and win the game...they can't rebound out of the zone

I'm happy Benny is coming next year but aside from him SU has generally become a 3 star destination. Kids fear they will be the one in his doghouse so go elsewhere. I'll root for them like crazy but I also root for the day a once great coach retires.

Eh, we're like BC probably was in the Big East. We're that goofy team that you're extra mad to lose to because we're so goofy - but at least we don't have a goofy court.

I give us three out of five goofys:

You must think the rest of the ACC is trash. Otherwise, given the litany of short comings, which include a terrible coach, terrible players, and terrible game plans, how do you explain our ever having won a single conference game? Never mind that we have a winning record all-time in the ACC?

Living in VA and having gone to several SU games at UVA and VA Tech, and all but one of the SU games at UNC (plus a few other games in the research triangle area) - my general impression from talking with standard issue ACC fans in this area - they view us the same way SU fans viewed Seton Hall and Providence when we were in the Big East. Generally speaking, fans of these teams expect to beat us (well, not VA Tech, but everyone else) and are surprised when they don't. Most ACC fans that I talk to in this area have no idea of Syracuse's program history.

I decided to look at the composite league standings in football and basketball since SU entered the ACC in football and basketball to see where we stand. This is league games only.

Accordingly, hoops wise, this places the wins median at 10 and the losses median at 9. Currently, at 4-4 to date in conference, it appears we are indeed aligned to what we are/have been in the ACC. That being, for every 19 games played in conference, we can expect to win 10 of those and lose 9. It is what it is...

What's interesting about the stats? In football, the top 3 former BE teams are #2, #4, and #5, and in basketball the top 3 former BE teams are #5, #6, and #8.

This is absurd. I have friends who are longtime UNC fans and grads and they are absolutely aware of Syracuse’s history and stature. The know we were one of the Big East’s flagship programs. Besides UNC, Duke and now Virginia, we’re the only current ACC school that’s won a national title in the past 30 years. We’ve been to two Final Fours in the past decade!

A lot of those older UNC types are really insulated, uniquely so. The younger they get the more perception changes.

That's weird, I don't get that vibe from people around here. At least those who aren't in their 20s. They talk that way about football, and then say you're a basketball school anyway. They all know the Dome and how they're the largest crowds in the sport (at least when things are good).

I think they know a lot about us, but see us as just stuck in neutral as an average program now because the legend gets to retire on his own terms.

Our peer group that went to ACC schools get it. Others maybe not so much.

"How Is SU Thought of in the ACC?"

As a VT fan, who remembers our battles in football from 1995-2003, I probably have a higher opinion of Cuse sports than the other ACC schools that have only shared a conference with you for a short period of time.

In basketball, Cuse is easily a top 10 program. In fact, I've seen the stats from Cuse fans posting on the csnbbs.com and cuse is really 1 or 2 championships away from being a consensus blue blood. Cuse measures up in every other metric to UNC, Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky. Prior to Boeheim having some wins removed y'all were 5th in all time wins and are still 6th.

Football is a different matter, I expect Cuse to struggle as all other North Eastern programs do from lack of available talent in the region. I think you should keep Dino even if he has a few down years. He's proven that if he can find a good QB that Cuse can win 10 games in the ACC coastal even when Clemson and FSU are good. That's a pretty high bar. But then I also think VT should keep Fuente and most message board posters seem to be calling for his head.

Lacrosse - Cuse is an all time power but VT doesn't have a men's team so I don't really watch it outside of the championship game.

I love sharing a conference with Cuse and hope the renovations and renaming of the Dome will end the curse that VT suffers from every time our football program plays there. I expect Cuse to be able to compete for a final four in any given year in the Men's NCAA tournament as it seems y'all make it in some unexpected years. The last being great because you came back from way down to beat UVA in the final minute.

So anyway, I think most ACC fans see Cuse as a blue blood equivalent in basketball who's been pretty average for a few years now and that Boeheim is experiencing a Frank Beamer or Bobby Bowden type of need to retire but will probably coach until his son graduates. And in Football, expect a 10 win season every few years with Babbers. Best of luck to y'all and I expect to see you in the NCAA tourney.
