How much longer will Kent be Chancellor?

Not disagreeing with you, but how much of this stems from the state's support.

NYS is making it harder for private schools (NYU, Cornell and Columbia are probably outliers from this).
Cornell is technically public. It is NYs land grant institution.

A great leader can move mountains for a university. It’s stunning to see how ASU has been transformed under Michael Crow’s leadership. In one generation - the school has gone from being a national joke to an ascendant university.
Same with University of Maryland where my kids will likely/hopefully go. Used to be an afterthought and now it's an academic powerhouse and is much harder to get into.

The rankings are problematic but i wonder if it's just happenstance that we're lower now than when Mel Eggars was running the show. Was he some great chancellor that propped the school into the top 40 and then boozy Buzz Shaw kept us there? I feel like we're overrating the chancellor a bit here with the rankings.

As an alum i'm outraged that I went to a school with a bozo ranking. I graduated from Newhouse which is a highly selective school within the school but ball don't lie with regards to the rankings. If I knew this when I was applying i'd have gone to BC or Tufts. Both have ascended in the 30 plus years since I stumbled out of 44s for the last time.

Some schools (northeastern) have cooked the books to make them more selective (articles on how they did it) and other schools have made themselves more attractive to all sorts of students (SU). Not sure what is better but in terms of owning a luxury item, my degree went from being a Mercedes to a Volvo.

Depends on how you view it. I've only seen it listed as a private school. However, when you get to Ivy it's a different world regardless.

I think Cornell is a weird blend which isn't handled well in tracking lists- some of the schools are public, some aren't. Its almost like if Syracuse and ESF got mashed together into one common school.

When my brother graduated from Binghamton, he found that it was extremely well regarded at the start of his career in NYC. When he was looking to move to Alabama to be close to his wife's family in Pensacola, nobody had any idea what this "Binghamton University" was. I'm not sure if that says something about the limited reach of Binghamton's reputation, the state education in Alabama, or both.
I think it says Binghamton doesn't play big time sports.

A key might be "be in a growing state/area". Arizona and Florida have more than doubled their population, that probably helped Florida State and Arizona State jump in rankings. Way bigger pool of possible student for them to pull from now than in 1984. Then declining or stable population in the northeast is going to affect a big city school less, which is why BC is in better shape than Syracuse.

SU is fighting an uphill battle. It’s northeastern private urban university. It’s expensive. If you are looking at schools with a similar profile what’s more attractive if you are looking nationally, BC, Miami, SMU, or ND? Throw Trinity in Dublin as well.

If you are looking regionally, UB, Geneseo, Binghamton, Albany, Stonybrook are all much more affordable. If you are looking for Engineering, RPI, RIT have a big head start.

SU is in a tough spot. Times have changed.
Agree about SU being in a tough spot. I'd say that most of those more affordable options dont have the national name though. RPI is dropping like a rock as well, and RIT no longer does education very well and also is weak at research -- a jack of all trades master of none. An R2 is the worst spot for a school to be in.

Private schools in NY are in a rough spot.

The mission of the school can have an impact. The mission at DePaul has been to provide a college education to historically underserved groups. The result is they accept a lot of marginal students, have a very high acceptance rate - and don't do great on rankings (they are in the mid-100s I think). Most of the things they would do to improve their ranking would either detract from their main goal or divert attention away from it. And realistically, people aren't going to select DePaul based on its ranking anyway.
I think it’s very acceptable for a school like Syracuse to have high rankings for certain colleges within the school, and others that are more “average.” But higher education costs have blown way past expensive. We’re now in the “stupid expensive” range. It’s unsustainable. And it’s going to change dramatically in the years ahead.

The SUNY schools not playing big time sports has always seemed odd to me. Does anyone know the history of why that is the case?

Who is the Dean?
Terence Lau, a 1998 SU Law graduate and member of the school's Board of Advisors. Came from the College of Business at Cal State Chico where he was dean for 5 years (but not at the time of SU's hiring).

As a Cuse fan definitely not complaining about that lol. Not sure exactly why, but it’s funny because there is a lot of people outside of New York that think Syracuse is a public university because of the lack of a flagship SUNY athletic program.

Fascinating thread, and one with many gracefully stated perspectives. Wonderful posters at syracusefan.com.

My oldest went to Binghamton, my two youngest went to William & Mary. Both were bargains compared to SU, and both are good to great options. As a Virginia resident, W&M was subsidized and relatively cheap, extraordinarily beautiful, and ranked 54th right now. While I enjoyed my time at SU, I loved spending 7 years visiting Williamsburg when I could. UVA was founded by Thomas Jefferson, but he went to William & Mary, the best public university in Virginia. I may be a little biased. Binghamton is a nice amalgam of several smallish cities with good food and access to the wonderful geology of upstate NY. I've spent good time in Binghamton. SU has a difficult road, especially if they can't maintain a superior product, educationally, academically, and experientially. Comparison shopping doesn't favor SU in many ways. Perhaps a good time for a fresh look.

It’s Carriers fault.

I mean, I guess that's a problem if you just have your car to brag about it. If you just like your car and how it makes your life better, it's the same one you always had.

I learned a lot at SU and it helped launch me into a really great career. I can cry about how other people might view my degree while I'm sitting in the 48v heated nappa leather seats of my actual Mercedes.

That would make sense...if the entire "rust belt" didn't experience the exact same thing.

Its almost like there were national government decisions which negatively impacted an entire region by incentivizing businesses which were the primary employers in those areas to close up shop and move...blaming the businesses alone guarantees that you cannot possibly develop viable solutions. (as an addendum, blaming one political party is also a recipe for disaster, as this has been going on for 50 years - so its almost like its a problem both parties have contributed to, and currently have no solutions for...)

This is a weird (irrational) take. How would your life be any different right now if Syracuse was still ranked in the 40s or 50s? How does the rankings slide negatively impact your life moving forward?

I think you missed the sarcasm in his post.
