How much longer will Kent be Chancellor?

Seriously, what a gift Syracuse University bestowed upon Upstate Medical University—unreal. They also gave away/closed the College of Nursing at Syracuse University. That seemed to be a really good choice as well. It is time to reopen, dear Chancellor. The field is ripe. Smart colleges and Universities must invest in technology, engineering, and, certainly, the medical sciences. Otherwise, keep it at primarily a liberal arts level? I wonder what will become of us.

How much did Syracuse receive when it sold the medical college to SUNY?

Almost everyone agrees that rankings are flawed, but it's myopic to ignore multiyear (downward) directional trends as compared to peer schools. One could argue that this administration has prioritized fundraising and real estate development, among other things, over sustaining SU's academic reputation. And the current Chancellor did note when he assumed office that a USN&WR ranking of 53 was too low and that he would take steps to address that.
Fundraising is the lifeblood of the University and infrastructure/real estate development is crucial in attracting students so I’m not he can be criticized for that.

Trajectory of the law school tends to disprove that. New building, decent fundraising has been accompanied by decline in rating of about 40 over his tenure. University as a whole is little better.

Isn’t Dineen Hall about 14 years old? What has the chancellor done or not done to impact the law school ranking?

And my question is a sincere one.

The ranking was I believe 73 shortly after Dineen Hall was dedicated and has been sliding ever since to 110 or so currently. The University has gone from 51 to 73 over the same period.

lack of first class research.

Lucky for us, no one will be doing research anymore!

I am an SU law school grad - graduated many years ago.

I am still pretty close to one of my professors who was there well before I was and long after I graduated.

He attributes the ranking issue to a faculty that does not have a strong record for academic achievement, i.e. publishing.

He has not explained to me why that is so.

The reason for the drop in law school rankings would usually be due to lower LSAT score, lower bar pass rate, and employment in law required/preferred jobs.

Maroney?
My immediate family has five degrees from the law school (including me).

I'd like to see our US News ranking improve, because why not? But I'd contend that rankings like this are more important...

A- overall. A's for academics, professors, athletics and student life. Only real ding is for location (and campus food & safety, but most schools don't score well on either of those).

SU is still a VERY attractive school to attend among high school students and kids enrolled in college.

I don't know what it's like in CNY, but anywhere else in the northeast when someone says they, or their kid, is going to Syracuse the reaction 99% of the time is "ohhh, that's a great school".

Yes, that's a fair point.

Because the University only pays about $3,500 per class per semester to Adjunct Staff. I've been offered a couple positions and asked for more, and when they said "that's the budget", I declined. The University feels like it is a privilege for local attorneys to teach there, for the "prestige".

That's why their professors aren't published, for the most part. They're working lawyers who fit in teaching for a bit of side change and the visibility of saying they are an SU Law Professor. They're not scholars. The University is generally not investing in a competitive salary. They are looking to do it on the cheap.

I will say that the older attorneys I know who went to SU Law are among the scions of the local legal profession.

Those who graduated from SU Law in the last 20 years are like lawyers who went to Brooklyn Law or St. John's. They make a living, sometimes a very nice living, but they are not the best of the best.
