Hughes vs Griffin

I say "interesting" mostly because there's still a sizeable contingent around here who, uh, don't think much of Alan's game

Hughes was a go to star. AG can be a great number 2 guy. Idk what would happen if we put him in Hughes shoes last season.

Stats are great. Watching both guys play, there is clear separation between the two.
maybe, I don't know. I do know that it's a valid argument to say AG is every bit as efficient offensively, if not moreso (better shooting #s) - and just as valid to extend that to say AG is all around more productive when rebounds/steals/blocks are factored in.

The criticisms of Griffin usually center around his defense (noticeably low effort at times), ball handling, and ball security.

I don’t think anybody criticized his rebounding and scoring.
Griffin’s weaknesses are he doesn’t put the ball on the deck at all, he becomes a little to obsessed with getting his shots every game and he turns the ball over too much.

But his positives way out weigh his negatives. He shoots well, he rebounds hard, very athletic in transition defense.

He gives us a lot of Hughes did but not all of it.

It's wild that he's been more efficient offensively, but has a lot of inefficient fat to trim from his game.

I think it helps we have 4-5 guys who score instead of 1-2 so much harder team to guard and we are playing at a faster pace most of the time so more chances to score..

I wonder where he got that info from? ;)

Biggest separation in my mind is in their ability to focus. Elijah was always dialed into the game, always going full tilt. I can’t remember one game where Hughes wasn’t ready to play in terms of effort. And i can’t recall one game where JB had to sit him down to get his attention.
AG has had games where he seems to not be focused, lackadaisical, a little spacey. However, should he get that part of his game on a consistent track, he’s arguably a better physical talent than EH.

This isn’t a knock on AG who is having a great year but also keep in mind the difference in the quality of the ACC between 2019 and 2021. In 2019 Duke, UNC and UVA were all 1 seeds in the tourney and we played them a total of 5 times.
