I can't take it anymore

Ok - Lydon is the next KrisJo or Scoop then.
Happy now?

PS - did you know Scoop and Dion are cousins? :p

PPS - when Lydon comes off the bench, and then becomes a lottery pick, which former SU player should we compare him to? ;)

Lydon. Compare him to Lydon.

I'm with OIG on this one.

Unless both your 1 and 2 can penetrate and handle, then you need your 3 needs to be able to create his own shot(Lydon is not that player). With White at the 2 , I don't think it is a good combo with Lydon at 3. With them at 3 and 4 with our two guards the primary ball handlers they will work well. Our best offensive lineup with be
1. Gillon
2. Battle
3.White
4. Lydon
5. any one of the centers who can rebound and finish

I honestly can't imagine JB starting 2 guys who were not his own actual recruits. Just boggles my mind. "Come to SU, you'll get all the playing time you need, unless of course we bring in a transfer." That just seems so counter to the Boeheim I thought I knew.

And yes, I absolutely believe Boeheim promises certain players starts.

Welcome to the world of collegiate free agency.

Prior to this offseason, JB has never dipped his toe in this pool of water -- so its never come up before.

Our roster was really odd three months ago [hard to believe that we added not just 1 but THREE players in that span of time]. I don't think the staff expected Mali to jump this year, and we also had fewer scholarship players than we normally do [even accounting for the sanctions].

I didn't expect JB to get into the 5th year market either, but we had to make some moves. And also, it is a new recruiting "resource" to go after these kids, it is a competitive disadvantage to not at least explore those options.

But yeah--having two 5th year transfers doubles the complications associated with chasing these transfers and integrating them into an existing lineup.

By the way RF, I never responded to your very well thought out post re: Gillon. I'm very interested to see him play, but I still think of him as a mid-major level guy. Maybe one at the top of that level for sure. I'm wondering though if the addition of White changes your thoughts on how much time he gets versus Howard. The point made by someone else regarding Howard not being able to be on the floor offensively with the Roberson/Chukwu types who also aren't scorers was a really good one, but having Battle, White and Lydon out there all at once seems like more than enough scoring. Having a 6'1" guy on the top of the zone, when Frank at 6'5" I think is sitting, is a bit scary to me. Heck, in that lineup above, you've got 3 guys who've never played the zone before. I'm not seeing that at all.

No worries--glad you saw it.

I don't worry about Gillon having to make a mid-major jump--he's very skilled offensively. The two questions in my mind are: how long does it take him to blend in with teammates [i.e., can he run a team and be a nice complimentary scorer, or does he fit better as a bench gunner / scorer], and how does he adjust to having to play zone?

On paper, he doesn't have the measureables to thrive in our defense. But that doesn't mean that he CAN'T be an effective zone guard, albeit a short one. Time will tell.

Offensively, I really like what he brings to the table--especially the deep shooting range. With Lydon and White both hovering around the 40% mark for three point shooting last year, if Gillon [who was at 38% and 39% before having his percentage dip last season] and Battle can be in the 35% range, we're going to be a really nice shooting club.

Did you get a chance to check out that lengthy video of Gillon playing last season? Definitely check it out if you hadn't. Like I said in that other post, don't pay attention to the highlights, just look for the skills that are translatable. There are times when you see game clips of guys at the mid major level who are good players, but you just know that they wouldn't get away with some of the stuff at the P5 level that they can at the mid major level. Slow passes, smaller guys rebounding / scoring inside amongst the trees. Etc. Many of Gillon's attributes are things that he'll be able to do in the ACC, which is why I'm excited that we added him.

I'm also excited to hear that my boy Franklin Howard has improved a lot over the offseason. No doubt, playing in the final four was an invaluable experience for he and Lydon to build upon. Two options are better than one, so having Gillon / Howard push each other is good for them both and good for the team, IMO.

I think the best justification not to start Lydon is that White and Gillon didn't come here to come off the bench.

Is that true? Who knows? But I think it is just as likely Lydon comes off the bench as starts. Because right now, I don't think JB knows.

Agree that JB doesn't know what will be yet. But in terms of the highlighted reason...

I actually think that makes sense in the case of White who was already at two P5 schools prior to coming here. I think it only makes sense in terms of Gillon, who I like but think some like him way more than I do, if Battle proves either in practice or in early non-conference games that he can't handle the point.

In either case, I believe that at the end of the majority of our games, Lydon, Battle, White, and Gillon will be on the floor together. And that is what truly matters.

Cheers,
Neil

While there was conjecture that Battle was offered the PG position, I think the only thing that was publicly stated by Battle would be that he would have the ball in his hands a lot. That doesn't mean he's always bringing the ball up and setting the offense like Ennis would.

True. But I hope you don't think Gillon is another Ennis. He isn't. Probably the best pure point guard on the roster is Howard. Gillon's A/TO ratio in his two years at CSU is 1/1.95 and his average steal rate per game is .55 per game. I mention this not as a negative toward John Gillon, just as perspective that the bar Battle needs to exceed to potentially be the starting PG is a lot lower than if Ennis were on the team. Again, I like Gillon and what he can bring to the table, but I believe those assets might be better served alongside Chukwu (a shotblocker at center who can help hide his deficiencies on defense) and in terms of speeding up the pace the game off the bench. All of which won't matter if Battle proves to raw to function as CG with some point skills along the lines of G.

Cheers,
Neil

Wouldn't be surprised if he called Don Pitino and asked about Damion Lee and Trey Lewis. Obviously those guys were good for Louisville and they had a nice team before the problems. Despite Pitino's issues and future; I know for a fact that JB and Don Pitino are close still.

Your post is like listening to a Rage Against the Machine song. I have no idea what you are talking about but I like that you are fighting back.
Nice.
