I count 6 games where we had halftime lead and lost

Buff
ODU
Duke
UNC
UVA
Clemson

That seems bad. That seems like a pattern
Do we know how many times we were down at halftime and came back to win? Too lazy to look, but it doesn’t seem like many if any.

And to be honest, in a typical SU year, we should have won four of those six games.

That happens, and we feel so much better about where this team is headed, and the program in general.

23-9, instead of 19-13. Big difference.

Ohio state
Georgetown
ND

...and really only GTown was a big comeback.

Adjustments? Foul trouble? Lack of focus? All play a role. It’s not good.

I don’t buy that. Last year, definitely. When Andy and devo were lost for the year, definitely. Not this team. I’d by depth you mean guys who can actually consistently benefit the team, sure. But it’s not lack of bodies.

Lack of depth meaning guys JB will actually play.

Frank and Hughes has no business playing the mins they did today. Bad games happen, that’s when you turn to your bench. JB never does

(Edit: except for 2003)

The mental capacity of this team has to be brought into question in addition to their inability to compete for a full 40 minutes. They should have blown the doors off of Clemson in the first half.

SYR played on Monday and had 5 days to rest and prepare. Clemson played Wed. and barely beat ND on the road. And SYR wilts again. Pathetic.

It's not just the fact that we blew halftime leads, but we proceeded to get our doors blown off in the second half. Aside from ODU and UNC, the other 4 games ended up being double digit losses.

UB - Outscored by 16 in 2H
ODU - Outscored by 16 in 2H
Duke - Outscored by 15 in 2H
UNC - Outscored by 11 in 2H
UVA - Outscored by 28(!!!) in 2H
Clemson - Outscored by 19 in 2H

So in those six games, we were minus 105 in the second half. That is so laughably bad/sad. Unacceptable.

Hughes was brought in as a transfer, during sanctions, knowing he’d sit out a year. That’s an extreme priority recruit by the coaching staff. The guy has become barely playable in our recent stretch of shenanigan level basketball.

Like you said, depth means the guys actually have to be able to play.

Howard shouldn’t be playing.
Hughes play of late warrants a bench role.
We have no legitimate starting ACC Center.
We have no legitimate starting ACC Point Guard.

That’s bodies, not depth.

Mental capacity of a team that starts a JR and SR in the backcourt and returned all 5 starters from a sweet 16 team last year? That’d be sad

We are not good enough to sustain any stretch of good shooting or to withstand any combination of foul trouble, missed free throws, acc refs, bad turnovers, etc.

Our pt guards can’t penetrate or they turn the ball over, our two scoring forwards are very streaky, our other forward and two centers score only in the most favorable situations, buddy has shown promise but but how much more can we expect from him?, and our best player has trouble doing what we need him to do bc he is constantly driving into double and triple teams.

Also, I think they are annoyed by all the southern accents too.

It is sad. The starting lineup has years of experience yet crapped the bed down the stretch. They quit when it gets hard.

THe math scared the heck out of me at halftime. Clemson shot 25% and was only down seven. There was no chance they wouldn’t execute better. We play like we’re trying to hold serve instead of grow leads and the leads are gone before we can blink.

In the same time period we probably shot 35%. They shot better in the 2nd. We got worse. It’s not hard to figure out why we lost despite Clemson’s cold start.

The second half deficits are really perplexing.

Has to be the lack of bench strength and/or lack of halftime adjustments?

We had plenty of first half ‘slow starts’ too and had to turn it up in the 2nd half.

SU only up 3 at the half against Colgate ended up winning by 21; Hoyas were up 13 at half SU won by 1;Arkansas St up by 2 at half yet SU won by 30; Notre Dame was up by 1 at the half and SU won by 10 etc.

We have rarely put 2 strong halves together whether from a slow start or a 2nd half collapse. Conditioning? Focus??
