I guess it is about the coaching

I'd like to get excited based on what I saw yesterday. The team looked good. Whether it was play calling, execution, effort, I don't know. As some have pointed out correctly, it's just one game and too early to draw any conclusions. I think the next two games will tell us what we've got. If we're as good as we hope, we should handle Wake easily and if we can't upset Clemsom, we should at least give them a run for their money! Let's hope for both.

I think there were signs that Lester is a better play caller other than the sprinkling of deep balls... Watching the replay... I've seen these signs...

More setup of plays off of previous plays
Returning to plays that have worked
more open receivers
Less side to side stuff
When we did side to side, the rec was open
Nice mix of run / pass

I think you might be seeing what you want to see.

You liked the sweeps but apparently you didn't like side to side stuff?

Our receivers have been open all year - Hunt just missed them.

Nice mix of pass/run? - we ran what the FSU D gave us.
We were 56%-45% run:pass in the first half and 33%-67& in the second half.

We threw a lot of screens the difference being that the passes were accurate making the timing better.

GM threw down the field as well but these kids can complete them and the D has to respect it.

I think the tempo and signals were much better and the execution much better. As far as play calling is concerned, we'll have to see more to really know.

I hate to say it but we are so TD starved as a fan base that we get giddy when we score a couple of times (and its not called back).

Well against FSU the Orange ran a total of 5 plays that resulted in a net of negative yards (penalties not included) against Nova alone they ran 9 ... you be the judge on how effective our offense was. This doesn't account for incomplete passes or penalties but literally plays that result in lost yardage from the play call itself. I would consider FSU a big step up from Nova wouldn't you? Our biggest change was the pace and sequence and it made a major difference.

Interesting point, but remember the QB situation vs Nova.

It is very difficult to compare things with only one game. We have all gotten giddy becasue we actually scored a couple of TD's that were not called back.

I saw a better offensive performance (still a lot of bad things) and faster play calling but I think the improvement may simply b e marginal improvement in play calling and reasonable improvement in execution. Let's hope both get better and better.

Fair enough and yes it is one game but we are talking about Nova vs FSU .. it isn't like we went from BC to Wake or something like that.

While true, Wilson was not a fit for the offensive gameplan that had been practiced for the weeks leading up to that game.

Now, you can put some blame on McD for opting for Wilson over Long at that point, but I think they may have still been trying to save Long's redshirt in Game 1.

Agreed however we are talking a huge talent discrepancy here ... I think we need to stop hiding behind the gameplan. I will say this ... I don't think McD is a bad OC ... I think his problem is reacting well to in game situations and managing the pace of the offense. With Lester there seems to be a more deliberate approach and the pace of the game is much better. No wasted time ... ball was snapped early in the clock ... and if you notice we didn't have guys sitting around waiting on a play getting anxious. When these kids are thinking too much it seems to lead to more penalties ... especially procedural.

It is probably Lester's quarterback eye and feel for the game. That was very noticeable. Personally, I think Lester let the game unfold and did not try to stick to a rigid script.
