I like this grad transfer thing

I'm loving the grad transfer thing. This has been an exciting time with Gillon and possibly White coming on board!
It's great until a team beats you and/or knocks you out of the NCAAT because of the good play of a grad transfer.

As with many well-intentioned rules that get exploited, the spirit does not match the reality.

I'm generally in favor of choice as much as possible. And I agree with you that the spirit / intent of this rule was designed to benefit the players. But in actual practice, it has emerged as a feeder mechanism for P5 schools gobbling up prospects from lesser programs. Many [most? all?] coaching staffs have lists of players who are fifth year grad transfer candidates--it just seems unseemly to me to actively recruit players on other teams' rosters.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel. As an alum of a mid major school that has been hurt by this rule, I really sympathize with those programs. But I'm also thrilled with Gillon and the possibility of White and certainly want SU to use the rule to their advantage. So basically I'm a hypocrite I guess.

I assume coaches will "smarten up" and basically try to make it difficult for guys who redshirted to graduate in four years so they can't grad transfer out.

If they did that, they should be sued right out of coaching.

Gillon and White don't have to transfer.

Have a better relationship with your player. Be a better program. Instill a culture of loyalty...I don't know. These players both fulfilled their agreement to the school which they committed to.

Oh well...

I admit, I'm for anything that wins. It's no different what Duke and UK are doing. They are going after the best one and dones, we are going after a couple of the best five year guys. This is our counter for this year. It's not like we have all fifth year guys. Most of the heavy lifting will be done by guys recruited out of high school, but we need to be aggressive to compete at the top of the food chain.

No doubt in my mind White is interested in SU because he saw Mike and Mal get drafted, while he didn't get a look by the NBA. This guy probably said to himself he's a better scorer/shooter than both, so a run in the ACC and deep into March will no doubt help his potential in the NBA.

People that hate the 1 and done and love this...could you be more transparent?

That's a very good point. However, the impact of 1-and-done is much different than the impact of the 5 year players changing schools for one year of graduate studies. Are you acquiescing to the idea CBB needs to be valued in itself? Or are you just interested in pointing out a mild hypocrisy?

I've always said that a college basketball team is a jigsaw puzzle without all the pieces. A coach has to do the best job of assembling a team out of the pieces he has. With the grad transfer rule, a coach can find extra pieces when he needs them.

I would think it makes it harder to have a tight rotation if two of the new guys you brought in are 5th year seniors.

Not interested in having this back and forth if you don't understand it. Thanks.
