I miss the Big East

Still think that shot for BC is going in even after all these years.

I was listening to that on a transistor radio on my bus returning from work. We turned north and I lost reception for a moment just as the shot went up and it took a while for me to determine that it had fallen off and that we had won.

The BET in MSG was special, it would've been a wild 5 days this year with no heavy favorite. Probably 8 of the 16 would then go dancing even with a down UConn, Marquette, and a down and out SU.

I loved playing Gtown too, they were a good and great program that played an important role in SU's success. When Ewing committed to them it was a great day for everybody.

Yeah, I know Georgetown still sucks but I loved playing them.

If change is inevitable, why can't it be good?

My son Tom and I cruised the streets around MSG for about an hour looking for tickets to the Georgetown game. Finally scored a couple a few minutes before tipoff. Expensive as hell but one of the best investments I ever made. My son was 13 at the time. He was born in Chicago but we lived in New Jersey most of his life. I followed Cuse when I could , but he was not a big fan, until that night. Georgetown was favored. What a game! Pearl was incredible. We were in it till the last 3 or so minutes. But Ewing was a monster, and took over the game late. We cheered ourselves hoarse. That night a Cuse fan was created and in spite of the loss, a Cuse dad was happy.

Even the announcers are at a different level. Listening to the acc announcers is like a high school game on a pbs station and Greensboro is no NYC!
I hope you're talking about radio announcers, because the TV guys for the ACC are McDonough/Shulman/Bilas.

No, the Raycom guys during the season, not the national ones. Gminski and whatever cliche machine they roll out next to him are a huge step down from all the league-affiliated announcers we had before.

I was watching the NCST and Pitt game last night and could not believe how dead the arena was...

Really really miss the BET, especially this year since we have nothing to look forward to. Hard to swallow the fact that we left it all for our crappy football program (which, yes, equals $$$)

I'd rather have the "old" Big East back any day over what is out there now. Fun, but frustrating, rivalries.

Having gone last year and thinking the same about that building - the experience on the inside is different (louder, more typical) that what shows on TV, for whatever reason. NCState fans flooded it last night - they are loud, sing songs, all that stuff. Pitt I am sure traveled no one.

We miss having a tourney at MSG -- it's not the teams so much. The ACC tourney at MSG would be just as much fun -- if SU could win a few games. We need Butler-Xavier, Xavier-Marquette, etc finals where the place will be 1/3 empty so MSG pulls the plug on them at the end of the contract and switches to the ACC. Nova and GTown never brought that many fans to the place despite having good teams.

I think the deadness of the arena when teams are playing that don't travel their fans is amplified in Greensboro. In MSG, with the dim lighting, I never noticed it as much during a crap game as I did watching the two last night.

I agree. I miss the BE of the 80's - SU, Gtown, StJohn, 'Nova, Seton, ... since then not so much.

Agreed. The Big East died in the early 90s, and what we were subjected to for the next two decades was an abomination in Big East clothing.

Your longing for the Big East really depends on where you lived during that time. If you could hop on a train and head into the city rather easily or drive a few hours to see SU play a number of teams, you probably miss the BE quite a bit. But it's more than that. I miss it dearly.

And I have no problems with that. The 30 for 30 Requiem for The Big East was nothing short of captivating, regardless of anyone's position on this.
