A lot of teams would think it's moronic to roll the ball up the court when you're up 16 points. The last thing you want to do is extend the game, right? Well, not by your team's/coach's logic.

I think it was very helpful that you were still in your leisurely mode of play when we decided to press. It was a big help for us, especially considering you beat our press all but one or two times. It was just your inability to initiate your offense at anything other than a snail's pace that had you so befuddled.

Thanks again!

there's a good "they were less comfortable with fast than full synagogue on yom kippur" joke in there somewhere, I'm just to giddy to find it

Gives them basically a full 30 to run their half court offense, rather than wasting seconds bringing the ball up.
Is game clocking running or not running?

He stopped doing that as we jumped on them, though. It was like a "tell" in poker -- that is how I knew we had them spooked

This is the exact reason. In the beginning I was trying to figure it out and came to this conclusion as well which has to be the only explaination.

30 seconds vs the zone > 23-25 seconds vs the zone

I do think it ended up helping us out in the long run but it wasn't dumb basketball by Uva.

I guess they're just so methodical in their halfcourt offense that they like to have as much of the shotclock to work something out as possible.

Ding ding ding. I think it's smart.

We started getting a lot of points with the clock stopped at about the 9 minute mark. Between the rolling and the foul shots.

They weren't scoring much either, I'm guessing UVA figures the extra 5-8 seconds would get them better looks and allow them to move the ball more and put the margin of error on our defense.

It is an interesting strategy and could be debated for days but I personally believe it's not a bad one. I've seen our zone just eat people alive for over a decade, shot clocks buzzing, bad shots forced with 2 on the clock, and I've seen teams get the best look ever with 4-5 seconds on the shot clock after we played perfect defense for a majority of the possession.

They were having a little trouble getting the looks they were the first half, they tried to end the game and a few more baskets go there way they would have. I don't think it cost them the game but it did make it a bit easier for us to come back extending the game.

Think about it this way. Wouldn't it be funny if the ball rolling down the court caused the opponent to put on a press, and then blow them out? That's not exactly what happened, but in some ways, its close to what happened.

Damn it. You make good point.

No, it was not a dumb move, it was a great move. The game clock was running the whole time but shot clock was not until they picked it up. It allowed them to run 3 or 4 seconds extra game off the clock on each possession.

It has nothing to do with their offense - it has to do with bleeding us to death with the game clock. As great of an idea as it is, it probably backfired because it may have pushed JB into the press earlier.

I laughed at this strategy and thought "Is UVA this frightened of the zone that they have to maximize the time to get off a shot??"

I'm pretty sure that neither the game clock nor the shot clock starts until the ball is touched and controlled in bounds.

Yes, and no, according to my sister. She says that a made free throw is a dead ball and the game clock starts at the same time as the shot clock (when someone inbounds touches it). But a field goal made doesn't stop the game clock.

You're right in suggesting that in many instances the game clock still moves. I think you're wrong in thinking it's a "great move" though. There is very little to be gained by having an team that feels it needs a full 30 seconds in the front court to run its offense. UVA proved that today with how often they shot themselves in the foot after beating the press.

What does shooting themselves in the foot after beating the press, have to do with rolling the ball out to get 30 seconds, except for it maybe causing the press, to some extent?
