I want to thank Virginia

What does shooting themselves in the foot after beating the press, have to do with rolling the ball out to get 30 seconds, except for it maybe causing the press, to some extent?

I'm not sure if you're kidding, or seriously asking. In case it's the latter... If your style of play is to operate with 30 seconds in the front court you are going to be thrown off your game when you can't do your roll the ball to mid-court schtick.

Yes, serious, just trying to see where you're coming from. Cause and effect is a little tricky in this instance.

Actually, the funny thing is that the team that is trying to use up the clock, then finds themselves 6 points behind, and would like some of that time back. Just the way it goes.

That's why UVa has the slowest tempo in the country.

When they're ahead and they get an extra 3-5 seconds off the game clock when it's running off a non-dead ball made basket, it's genius. When they're ahead a lot off a dead ball, it probably boosts their per possession metrics by having the full shot clock, and my guess is the trade off to their win probability is negligible of maybe taking a few less seconds off the game clock.

All in all, it's clearly a good strategy IMO. If it forces us to press earlier, if anything, that SHOULD play into UVA's hands more often than not, especially since JB is always adamant our press can't work for long stretches.

This time, obviously, it backfired on them, which makes it funny... But still the right play in the long run for them.

I'm pretty sure that neither the game clock nor the shot clock starts until the ball is touched and controlled in bounds.

It only stops at deadballs. Several times the ball was rolling, the shot clock not moving and the gameclock rolling.

I guess they're just so methodical in their halfcourt offense that they like to have as much of the shotclock to work something out as possible.

Precisely.

It kind of makes sense but at the same time I'm not sure there was a benefit or whether it was worth it. And I'm not sure what they were trying to achieve. I think they would have done better trying to race down the floor and make a few good passes before our zone got set. A quick pass to the high post, then to the low post corner, and then swing it back out to the wing for an open three would have been tough to defend because the zone collapses out of shape. But I'm not complaining. I'll take whatever advantage they give us!
