the Syracuse beat writers. This is NOT a diss on Dungey. He played well but I think it sets false expectations.

UCLA started a true frosh at QB against Virginia. His performance was impressive, going 28 of 35 for 351 yards and 3 TD’s, 0 ints. 12 different receivers caught a ball. That's impressive.

The UCLA kid got most of the 1st team snaps in practice. Dungey's getting those extra reps going forward should help his development.

That said, Rosen certainly had a nice debut.

Exactly, Rosen has been getting first team reps since the spring and was the top rated QB in the country coming out of highschool.

Rosen was ridiculous. He looked as good live as he did on his stat sheet. Pocket presence, command, touch, you name it.

I think what's impressive is that Dungey wasn't expected to play until mop up duty, was not practicing to be the starter, and still looked pretty poised and would have had even better numbers if not for a couple blatant drops. Plus, obviously he didn't get the same chance to sling it because we got up big early and just ran the ball down their throats.

Agreed. Dungey essentially played two quarters, if that. Kid was sharp. I expect him to only get better as the season goes on. The moment wasnt too big for him. He was poised and his intelligence will help him continue to grow throughout the year. I'm still expecting a bowl game.

Dungey didn't NEED to throw that many balls...keep that in mind. Im not saying he is a god...but its 2 completely different scenarios. Our RB's and hybrids controlled that game and Dungey did everything we needed him to. For a true freshman that IS impressive.

Can we be optimistic? He WAS impressive for the position he was put in (not expected to play meaningful snaps).

Just because he didn't have the standout numbers doesn't mean he wasn't impressive.

Exactly, we have the talent to make a bowl game if Dungey can just be an effective game manager with a couple bursts of playmaking mixed in.

I'll add this too, besides the fact that Dungey only played 2 quarters, and we had zero reason to throw the ball in the second half. If AC would have caught those two passes, Dungeys stats look even better. It would be 12-17 (70.6%), 200yds(approx), 3 tds, 0 ints, 30 rushing yds.

qb rating of 154 in first game is impressive. the kid from ucla was amazing.

Good point. Extrapolating his numbers to 4 quarters: 20-34 228 yards, 4 TDs o ints, 60 yards rushing.

;)

Additionally, Rosen was playing a much better team with a much closer score for the majority.

Do we even have 12 guys on the roster we could throw to? Just kidding, but UCLA has impressive receivers to go along with their impressive frosh qb. Ours are still a work in progress I think.

The kid from UCLA could be a two and done type candidate I believe, he is that good. Is that even possible?

Anyway, He is Andrew Luck type good.

I get the worry about premature expectations (I wouldn't say "false") but man does this program need ANYTHING to give it some life right now.

So I'll take a week of hype and hope.

Agreed, the kid is talented but will take some beat downs this year for sure but lets hope it isn't versus Wake and some of the bigger names on the schedule

While that can certainly be true - we could also say...if Erv doesn't make a nice 1 handed grab and do all the work, he's 9-17, 1 TD for roughly 85 yards. I thought Dungey was good, but I'm not going to form a real opinion until after the next 2 games. I sure hope he's everything we think he can be, but it's too small a sample size to get too excited yet.

Not possible. Need to be in school for 3 years (redshirt sophomore or true junior).

Is the UCLA kid a January enrollee by chance?

i saw a few comments on some espn shows about how easy it was for the UCLA kid as he was not touched once on a throw all day.. he had crazy numbers but i know 2 of his tds were to kids open by 10 yds. dungey was great for a kid with no expectations and no real snaps, he could also have had 4 tds with close to another 100 yds had one throw been on the money and one catch made. im not sure we had 1 Wr open as much as almost every UCLA wr was.

One of his TDs the WR should get 100% of the credit. it was a diving catch on a 45 yard throw - better catch than the one Cornelius dropped.

Dungey's numbers could've been better if Cornelius makes a catch. The overthrow was on Dungey; that's not impressive. He makes the throw then...

UVA is on our schedule most pundits predict us losing to them.

Dungey played good and has great potential. I don't like using the word impressive for him just yet.

10-17 for 114 yards and 2 TDs. If he' goes 28-35 and 351 against anyone else on the schedule we'll be building a statue.

I was at that game, and The Rosen One is the real deal. He was drilling passes onto the hands of receivers on the full run in between defenders. UVA also got some pressure on him, including a vicious late hit penalty by one of their DEs. Dungey will be good, like a Ryan Nassib, Rosen will be the 1st pick in the Draft whatever year he comes out...
