This post isn't regarding his talent or playing ability, but the absolute beating he takes on his body every single game. I honestly hope he isn't one of these former football players who at age 40 is breaking down physically and mentally. I simply can't remember a single SU football player in recent decades who even comes close to the consistent head-rattling shots this guy takes on a regular basis.

Yup. Great QBs learn how to avoid the kind of hits he takes multiple times a game. It's gotta be difficult for the coaches to build the team around him when they'd know he's very likely to be injured.

I still like Dungey a lot. He's easily the best QB we've had since McNabb. But I'm not sure that his game (a) is the best fit for Dino's system, and (b) is ever possible to make it through a season intact.

Troy Nunes.

I watched Lamar Jackson and Kelly Bryant run more than Dungey and get hit more than Dungey by bigger and stronger players yesterday.

Somehow this dude manages to get hit in the head more than any QB I've ever seen. I don't know if it's something he's doing or bad luck but it's very strange that he can't avoid shots to the head while other QBs are out here running 20-30 times per game no problem.

Nah. He's not better than Nassib. I wouldn't even say he's better than Nunes or RJ Anderson at this point.

Disagree. Nassib had a great 6 game run as a senior. Dungey has been better than Nassib relative to their class. But at least Nassib played, Dungey can't stay on the field.

Availability is part of the equation.

I've gone the other way. I've stopped worrying about Dungey. It's clear that he's decided it's ok to play reckless. Nothing I can do about that. He doesn't want to protect himself. There's a pattern here. He's gonna do what he do.

I don't expect him to make it through his entire career here. That maybe even for the best of his long-term health. Devito will play a lot next season.

Agree, the the book is out on him. "Put him on the ground". We'll see it the rest of the year

The staff needed to call a timeout or make a substitution when he came up lame. That was blood in the water. Seeing an immediate cheapshot from that defense was one of the least surprising things I've ever seen in sports.

At this point it seems that it may be better for him to stop "trying" to avoid hits. Seems he will always be in harms way so it might as well be reckless abandon all of the time

I think that ED runs way more than he needs to instead of throwing ball away. He panics once he moves and his first read is covered.

First of all yesterday was simply one of those games. If Eric pitches, if we dont rough the punter, if we dont fumble the punt, if the stripes dont miss multiple calls, if we catch the ball and if Middle doesnt cheat we win by 2 or more scores.

As to Eric's problem i believe it is simple. Eric is an athlete playing QB. His game is based on that athleticism. He was made to run and it is what defines him. Because he is a hit away from possibly ending his career he has lost his foundation lost his instinctual gift. Simply put he is over thinking as his primary concern is staying healthy.
I have seen this in other athletes and it is hard to fix actually impossible to fix as Eric is being asked to be a different QB and its obvious he is struggling.

Last point i felt that we should have left the general in the game. The one series he had just felt better and i believe that yesterday he would have won the game.

Long term Dino is our guy. Lets not forget the sack Mac crowd.

Go Orange!

Dino has admitted that he can't coach Dungey into protecting himself better; Dungey constantly makes highly-risky plays on the field and then, when he gets leveled, just says 'that's how football works'.
I understand that the running game is (and has been) remarkably unsuccessful and Dungey feels the need to fill some of that gap but it's crazy how he plays.

The real problem is that when the OL and RB's do improve, he isn't going to change how he plays. This is how he should be playing football in his mind.

He's a great quarterback and he's going to break all kinds of records at SU but when SU does start seeing some consistent success, it's going to be someone else playing QB.

he has taken a major beating last two seasons. foolish to think it hasn't impacted his abilities.

I posted in the game thread that Mahoney looked much more decisive in his limited action yesterday.

Dungey's decision making looked painfully slow yesterday and continues to put him in tough spots that subject him to unnecessary hits/punishment.

I know the OL is bad; ED should know that too and it should make him throw the ball away 3-4 times per game to spare himself the punishment.

Is it possible that they move Dungey to a slot position next year IF Devito is ready and as good as advertised? I know this is a bit out of the box but this happens all the time when you have an athletic qb in college and does this in the pros.

eric dungey is the starting qb until and unless another injury/concussion occurs. then we talk devito.

I disagree. The best player plays the positions that helps the team win more games. Again, if and only if Devito is ready. If he isn't then yes, Dungey has QB1 especially if Babers really does feel he's the man.

Agree 100%
