the season is …….

Disapointed that Rice is a non factor and Pringle isn’t ready. Ferguson has not impressed. Collins has been put in a blender in pass pro.

I saw exactly the same thing with Collins. The NT from UT abused him and, even in run fits, he got no push in short yardage situations against 55 and 92 on UConn. Need to get Miller ready. I'm giving Pringle a pass - great size and (reportedly) good feet, but NRFPT. Ferguson is good but can be a mixed bag ... lacks consistency.

Also, per Ryan's post above, Angeli's backside is exposed with Mack out. Poor communication on LB blitzes, especially delays.

Ferguson hasn't been as bad as I thought. Collins is good at times but then has like 2-3 bone head mistakes. Spoon has been the worst, he's a guard playing tackle. Hes often slow off the snap, and gets beat on leverage alot... Mack was fantastic in the first game, sucks that he got hurt...
I think tonight, is the time to bring out our Mammoth! Big Byron!
The LT position Bertrand has been serviceable but hes kinda light even tho hes over 300...
Finally Joe Cruz, great pass protector... run game not so much. Hes atheltic but he doesn't have the strength to maul DTs.

I was watching the replay of the UConn game the other day and I noticed on a couple of run plays in the second half, the OL was not firing off the ball at all. It was like the entire unit sat their and waited for the DL to come to them. And I don't mean a couple guys, i mean the entire unit. I don't understand what was going on.

Replying to myself here, but is it maybe because these were RPO plays where Angeli can either hand it off or decide to keep it and pass it? But I would think for these instances the OL would still block as if its a running play right?

O line cant block as if it a running play because once they are 4 yards down field they are illegally down field if it’s a pass.

  • No [or extremely limited] QB pressure
  • 175+ yards rushing
  • Imposing their will on the opponent [instead of being unable to open holes in the run game, or having difficulty in pass pro]
This is a good list.

And, I mean, hate to say it but we rarely see what you described, regardless of opponent.

I don't think I ever see our OL 4 yds down field blocking on a running play. Did you watch the games this year? ;-)

I would think they could still attack the DL and block as if its a running play but not go to the second level to block. That makes sense to me anyway.

We can still drive dline 3 yds off the ball

In theory it does, but getting someone to do it at game speed and letting off the gas at 3 yards so he doesn’t wind up 5 yards is difficult.

But if your just standing there waiting for the OL to come push you back, i don't think its very likely you will be successful running the ball.

Good AI info and pretty much what i expected.

AI Overview

On Run-Pass Option (RPO) plays, the offensive line
does shoot off the ball, just like on a normal running play. This is the key element that differentiates an RPO from a play-action pass, and it's what creates conflict for the defense.
The offensive line's behavior is critical for the play's deception and legal execution.
How the OL's action works on an RPO
  • They execute a run block: The linemen fire out at the snap and block with run-blocking techniques, driving forward to engage defenders and create lanes for a potential run.
  • They must stay near the line: The linemen cannot legally get too far downfield before the quarterback throws the pass. In the NFL, this distance is only 1 yard, while in college it's 3 yards. This is why RPO passes are always quick-hitting throws.
  • A "fast pass" is necessary: The quarterback must make a rapid read and throw the ball if they choose the pass option. If the pass takes too long, the advancing linemen will be illegally downfield, resulting in a penalty.
The purpose of the OL's run block
The offensive line's movement forces defenders, particularly linebackers and safeties, to respect the possibility of a run. By reading a specific "conflict" defender, the quarterback can make a decision:
  • Hand off the ball: If the defender drops back to cover the pass, the quarterback hands off the ball to the running back to take advantage of the better numbers in the box.
  • Pull and throw: If the defender crashes forward to stop the run, the quarterback pulls the ball and throws the quick pass into the area the defender just vacated.
