If you don't want another

Maybe i'm old but I don't see how that Twitter ad or a facebook post really gets the needle moving for casual fans. Especially those over 30. Ooohhhh SU said we don't need to pick apples this weekend. Let's go to the game instead!!!! Really?
Yes. You're old...and so am I and how advertising is done has changed. The internet and social media have replaced print, radio and tv ads.

I'm guessing you don't read much on here anymore. I complained about a lack of marketing and the downsizing of all of the fan related activities with the exception of the money grab in the quad pre-game. Mr. Gopher even had a BBQ for the season ticket holders. Most of the posts about Dungey are far worse let alone Ward. Cmon man. Perspective. And instead of just calling it whiny why not dispute with facts. Change my mind.

Hosting fans on the quad is infinitely smarter than anything Gross did - loved TGD's campus walk with Grob and an empty quad - MARKETING!

The ticket pricing map in the Dome was a disaster, the spending on functionaries that did everything but raise two nickels for the AD was stupid, we went on probation. Our football coach thought he was too stupid to work for.

More people in this thread will have seen that tweet than had actually acknowledged it on twitter.

The marketing department needs some adjustments to actually reach people. They’ve put out incredible material, they just need to work towards better social media engagement.

It helps to be born in Syracuse in the early 60s and pretty much imprint on it growing up since SU Fball and Bball were the only games in town (sorry Chiefs). You can't market that kind of attachment. Consider it a pre-existing condition for which there is no cure.

Maybe i'm old

The indicator for this is, if you start a sentence out by saying, "maybe I'm old". Probably a good chance....

However, I agree with you. Just because something is on twitter or IG doesn't make it a great ad. The apple picking ad is terrible. Especially when you consider the platform/target market.

Infinitely smarter than replacing the turf? Joining the ACC? Upgrading the Dome? BTW, Gross did try the Quad party thing. I don't think it worked and so they killed it. But I remember Lucuna Coil? playing the quad prior to a Grob game.

Do you really fault Gross for us going on probabtion? I mean I guess I get it since we've had a squeaky clean BB program during Boeheim's entire tenure....oh wait.

If you want him back you should start a campaign, put up some billboards...

If I hear an add or if tv goes to commercial, I immediately change the station... my wife says that’s my a.d.d. though. Did you see the game last night? What time’s kickoff Saturday? I better mow the lawn before it rains.

Edit: Believe what you want or not. Have you seen Pitt's stadium? BC? We are a northeast football team who does not harbor child molesters. Attendance is an issue for everyone. Ignoring it and saying well it shouldn't be that way isn't going to help.

I didn't say ignore it, I just find it a little unbelievable that's all.

Do we collect data from ticket buyers? How did you hear about this game? From a billboard. How many tickets have to be brought from that segment to make it worth the cost of the billboard?

Don't tv adds during local NFL games still reach people? Drive time radio?

On the radio front, satellite and podcasts have taken over to a large extent from the people I know (myself included). Getting a message to people isn't as easy as you may think these days.

He hired GROB and Shafer, that buried us, I don’t give a sh** about billboards in Times Square or whatever else. The guy was a dope and if you think he was the guiding hand to get us into the ACC then you and your H0T Takes are wrong

Agree and as far as the Dome renovation, Wildhack has gotten us further than TGD did. Sure, TGD did some upgrades but this is a big time renovation and Wildhack is doing it fiscally responsibly, a concept TGD never heard of. As far as the Fan Fest, yes that is a disappointment but I would almost guarantee that is being led more by Dino than by WIldhack. Regarding Midnight Madness, I'd rather watch a scrimmage personally.

I actually have seen a commercial twice for the game in the past week. Once during the orange zone, on channel 3(which probably does nothing considering anybody watching that is probably going to the game anyways, or at least is aware of it). The other was during my weekly 10 minute fix of Seinfeld on fox. Both are unlikely to move the needle

What station is podcast on?(Kidding)

Maybe Boston is different. 4.3 million market, with 20 percent of radios tuned in to sports radio, at any given time. I know 1 guy that has satellite radio, but virtually everyone I know listens to sports radio(40 crowd). Even folks that don't watch sports ...(they mix it up, it's funny, and the music programming is horrible- Syracuse is much better)

Beats me. Their advertising reaches an enormous amount of people. Hard to believe there aren't a few hundred thousand with the radio on, in the Syracuse area...(at least drive time)

650,000 in the metro syracuse area. Probably 1/3 could care less about sports.
Your hoping to get a 30 second spot to maybe 3 or 5 k people. Should it be on the highest rated morning radio stations or popular satellite shows or local news on tv ECT... It Definately is a different game then when we were getting 49 plus late 80s and 90s

Attendance thread stop here, but I have heard virtually 0 hype in the media regarding this weeks homecoming game. From scanning ticketmaster it seems End Zone seats both 200 and 300 are moving steadily .
I am in Binghamton, just wondering is there anything going on locally hype wise that I am missing

Everyone always assume they are the consumer.

Strong dose of digital acquisition marketing that started AFTER the Clemson game for NC.

No idea how much they are spending, but Homecoming is the one game they should not spend a lot of money marketing to the single-game ticket target; focus to those on-campus or to alums that have signed on to other homecoming events.

I haven't seen SU actively market games since Gross left. I know some don't like him but the guy at least tried. Not sure what SportsCenter is doing up in his office besides making sure no contraband gets in but Spring game and FanFest are a joke compared to what they used to be. Midnight Madness has been reduced to a pick up game. I'm not sure the Dome reno will ever start and entry procedures are a serious PITA. There is no local advertising/marketing. Seems like Wildhack is just going through the motions. Oh sorry I forgot, you can now buy $7 beers in the quad before the game. Thanks.

You make alot of good points and I agree. Most will argue that JW and the university is electronically marketing to the younger generation on fb but there has to be more audio/visual around town. That form of marketing will never die. Cuse shouldn't be a ghost town during fb season.

Mad I'm a retired Social Studies teacher, I sheepishly admit I don't know what digital acquisition marketing means.

Waayyy different in my market, but ok

Most young folks I know, under 24, don't use Facebook much, or at all.. It's for their Mom's .. Snapchat, instagram, and YouTube, sure. So what are 24-50 year old men using, in Syracuse? In Boston, most in that demographic listen to sports talk radio...

According to Nielson, 93% of people listen to radio weekly. I can't imagine that only 5,000 people are listening to the top drive time radio in Syracuse. Maybe that's the case, but the #'s say radio still reaches the most people.

I guess the 137k on Twitter, is good enough.
