If you don't want another

How about advertising a ticket deal for the game... on twitter or the radio or TV or some other platofrm...

Just saying the game is on Saturday, don't go apple picking is ridiculous. They need to sweeten the pot to make the casual fan think about it seriously.

Just like in the car business you always heard "An ad without a price or picture is a waste of an ad".

Saying the game is on Saturday without offering a compelling reason to go like a discounted ticket is also ridiculous and wont get you too much bang for your buck.

The only thing that will sustain a crowd at SU games is a competitive program. Every decision that the AD makes has to be geared towards improving SUs chance at winning. If we had the Vikings stadium and Gergs teams the stadium would be empty. Great foid, cold inexpensive beer, air conditioning, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Empty.
Focus on the best bang for the buck. Have the best surroundings possible for your team as that will help attract talent. , great coaches will ensure the players we do land will perform at a high level. Its actually very simple. Focus on building the best team possible. The end result will be lots of fans at the games.

And on top of the great product on the field, work on the game day experience. Penn State gets a great crowd because they have a good product on the field, but also because the "game day tailgate experience" is an all day/all weekend party that people drive hundreds of miles to participate in.

My father goes to all of the SU games because he is a big football fan. My mom stays home because she is happy to see the games she can catch on TV and everything that goes along with attending is more of an ordeal than an "experience".

My father in law goes to all of the PSU games because he is a big football fan. My mother in law goes with him and "loves" football because of the game day party atmosphere and because her friends go.

And the fact that my mother-in-law goes and enjoys going to PSU games makes it easier for my father in law to go every home game. The fact that my mom doesn't go to the SU games makes it more difficult for my father to go, if for no other reason than they are not united in Saturday afternoons are reserved for SU football.

It isn't really about the advertising and selling a few more tix this week. It's about re-building a fan base, a following and loyalty. And everyone that takes the time and effort to spend time here is probably not in the target market that needs to be reached.

Great post. It is all about of being apart of a gathering of the experience. As the team improves this will begin to happen organically. The Quad is a good start. We are on our way.

The Bills suck. We go for the tailgating. 100% different atmosphere and crowd.

I agree though, start winning and people will start coming to the games.

Bill season ticket holder, agreed for the most part. But also the environmet in the stadium is much more raucous too, even when the record gets bad. Now 90s Dome? Thats a different discussion, I never heard any stadium louder than for some of those games.

IF the last field goal from Pitt broke further left you would have 3K more there this Saturday. End of the day that's what most if this is. Heck don't call an illegal man downfield on top of that the week before and 5K more are there.

I'm guessing you don't read much on here anymore. I complained about a lack of marketing and the downsizing of all of the fan related activities with the exception of the money grab in the quad pre-game. Mr. Gopher even had a BBQ for the season ticket holders. Most of the posts about Dungey are far worse let alone Ward. Cmon man. Perspective. And instead of just calling it whiny why not dispute with facts. Change my mind.
I have to say it sounded a bit whiny. _3GL8KNU_400x400.jpg

What station is podcast on?(Kidding)

Maybe Boston is different. 4.3 million market, with 20 percent of radios tuned in to sports radio, at any given time. I know 1 guy that has satellite radio, but virtually everyone I know listens to sports radio(40 crowd). Even folks that don't watch sports ...(they mix it up, it's funny, and the music programming is horrible- Syracuse is much better)

Beats me. Their advertising reaches an enormous amount of people. Hard to believe there aren't a few hundred thousand with the radio on, in the Syracuse area...(at least drive time)
You only know 1 guy with satellite radio? Outside of an M. Knight Shyamalan movie, how is that possible in this day and age? Every new car in the last 10 years has it.

How's the parking in Happy Valley. Do people have to take buses from the parking lots?

Fine but to say it's the most whiny post in the history of the board is ridiculous. And it did what it was supposed to do which was start a conversation about our current marketing strategy. I never said I wanted Wildhack fired. But I feel like there's been a definite drop off in local media exposure and fan engagement.

Well, it *is* Homecoming, er, Orange Central this weekend.
So the city is pretty much full-up with visitors, who either will or will not attend the game.

And none of those people has leaves to rake, so... :p
Do people go to homecoming any more

Seriously, none of this marketing crap works or makes a tangible difference in the attendance numbers. The equation to fan attendance is pretty simple:

Losing team + 95 degree Dome/overpriced food and beverage + cupcake opponents = less than 35k attendance.

Winning team + comfortable stadium environment + respectable opponent = 35k-40k attendance.

Top 25 team + comfortable stadium environment + sustained winning success = 41k-48k.

Is this an entertaining product to watch and is it more comfortable to watch in person or from my couch should be the only items the University considers.

Just got pissed off all over again...

I know one guy that will pay for it, Sports radio is free, and that's what most folks want to listen to around here. Anywhere besides the car it's Pandora, etc...

No E Street radio?????

Back to homecoming, 2300 plus. Seems like a late rush, but will be fun.

I miss the old scout on WNDR. "Ben will rile up the boys and they'll beat those pesky Mountaineers."

Are these tickets unsold or sold and people just aren't coming? I know around here unsold tickets for the Rockies just get set at bars for people to grab for free or are given to charities. CU actually gives season ticket holders options for free tickets to games they anticipate low attendance at. I give those to co-workers to try and create new fans.

Yes the bottom line is performance but some people just need to be exposed to the product to become a fan and want to go. Get people into seats by any means, and they will buy concessions and apparel. That is money that would lot have been spent if that seat was empty. Start there to grab that market of those that maybe have not thought of going to a game before.

Well don't because both teams were having their way with our defense at the end of the game and I don't think you can really single out those two plays as the reasons we lost. They were sucky plays but the game wasn't on the line and there was plenty of time/ways to still win those games. We just couldn't stop them. Pitt maybe but I'm convinved Clemson could have scored at will during the last 5 minutes of our game with them and we had effectively stop moving the ball.

Let me admit that I don't fully remember the exact plays or series of plays that those games ended on. Just the general feeling that Pitt could, at that point, run all day on us. And Clemson had us figured out by the 4th quarter on both sides of the ball.
