ill say it...

I'll say it, if SS doesn't fire his DC even though they're best friends, they are both going down in flames

I didn't see anything today that made me want to blame the coach.
the playcalling at the goaline early in the game. The 48 yard FG attempt when you have a 4th and 1. That's all coaching!! Early in the game you ALWAYS take the points. The FG, if you claim to be hardnosed you go for it there instead of having your mediocre kicker try and make one from 50 yards on the road

I like Shafer too, he's a realllllyyyyyy good guy BUT the excuses need to end and being a good guy unfortunately just doesn't cut it for this job. You have to win and make good coaching decisions, neither of which he has done.
Agree. Some guys are OUTSTANDING coordinators and bad head coaches. Shafer falls into that category.

As a head coach you are in a results oriented business, Shafer doesn't have the results. Wins matter!

Cute. Read the same thing last year with the offensive coaches.

If we had last years D with this years O, we'd be in good shape. Just how it goes.

It's not working. Coyle could lose this fan base In a big way bringing back shafer in a 3 win type season finish. He would come back on a very hot seat.

Coyle has a ton of decisions to make

Your connection to reality is tenuous at best.

Coaches aren't perfect. Pretty much every game I've watched today I've seen head scratchers. Even Harbaugh.

Still those things didn't lose the game.

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, then every day would be Christmas. At some point people need to answer for our record.

Of course it did. It was a big part as to why SU lost the game. You got the ball inside the 5 and can't come away with points because the head coach and his OC have the QB in a shotgun then refuse to kick a FG. Those points were needed.

Harbaugh has won at Stanford and went to a Super Bowl...don't even mention him in the same breath as Scot Shafer. Shame on you. Just because other coaches make dumb decisions doesn't mean we have to just accept Shafer's and live with it

Lose the fan base? I know I'm excited. We're not lifeless anymore. Can't wait for dungey to have a year in s&c
The fan base is already lost. Nobody goes to the games. The attendance numbers don't lie. If not for LSU fans traveling that game would have been a dud too attendance wise

Agreed people get really carried away with this stuff as if one call is fireable offense. Not calling a time out at the end of the game was a head scratcher but whatever happens all the time.

If we lost like Michigan did today somehow the lynch mob would be in full force. Harbaugh is a genius one minute dolt the next... Hindsight is great.

I'm not saying shafer is a world beater but it's a mob mentality with this stuff

Harbaugh didn't lose the game for his team today. The punter did.

In today's SU game, you can point to many decisions that were made poorly by Shafer which helped result in SU losing.

Big difference between trying to compare the 2 situations

the point is not about a small number of individual decisions. the point is that shafer is now getting regularly beat by worse and worse teams. south florida and Virginia are 90+ type teams and we lost to both of them. shafer also has a history of not beating anyone that is rated better than us. it's pretty bad and it isn't about a decision here and there, it is about bad offense and worse defense when the game is on the line.

Franklin lost the game.

Whigham lost the game.

Just the tip of the iceberg there.

Coaches made some curious decisions. Passive D at the end. A few others.

What if kicker makes the field goal? What if no face mask penalty? Was the facemask penalty on shafer? It's hindsight and mob mentality is all it is. I get fans wanting to fire coaches but guy steps on the field and he can't fart without people question decisions. It's the way it goes, I get it.

I honestly don't think syracuse will ever be really good again because they lack resources to make it happen, if they do hire a great coach I don't see them keeping that coach. Guys like shafer are what we will get. Offensive gurus are out there but aren't always successful either.

Always important to remember that in sports the opposition is trying to win game too... People seem to forget this. We were also a 7 point dog for a reason...

That's the job he signed up for. All head coaches get this kind of scrutiny. And in Syracuse its far less than in most big time college football towns. Shafer has gotten a pass for the most part till just recently. At some point ya just gotta win! He ain't winning. USF and UVA are not Alabama and Auburn...these are winable games.

I 100% agree with that. Which is why "scheduling" is a big deal. Since we won't be a "big boy" in football ever no reason to ever play an LSU or Wisconsin. Schedule cupcakes, be happy with 6 to 7 win seasons and the lower to mid tier bowl games. And Syracuse in football is a total "stepping stone" school. We can find a great young coach and he can come here and use us to move on to a bigger job. There is nothing wrong with that. But I agree with this part of your post.

^^This. We just need to re- evaluate our expectations and enjoy the good. Never gonna be elite. Appreciate the bowl games when we get them.

this is such total and complete drivel. we have the same resources as a pile of programs that are performing better. can you tell me about Memphis tv contract?

Memphis did have another big win today, IIRC

I do think Shafers in game management needs work, but I can't really put this on the coaches. These las 2 games I feel we win in a year or 2, or actually 3 when we are the experienced team. Just a couple stupid mistakes, and not executing when it counts.

Franklin and Whigham did not lose the game.
Putting the weight of blame on anyone is so gd lame.
Teams win and teams lose. I'm not saying there's zero causality but we as fans need to take a step back and accept that things go wrong sometimes.

Oh, I understand.

But to place the blame solely on Shafer and the staff is just as absurd.

An Jim boeheims won a title yet the geniuses around here constantly criticize him to.

Look Go back and read the game thread today. 99% of the posters agreed with going for it; and I guarantee every one them is in your camp. They're all whiners. Only 1 person said to kick it and he was scoffed at.
