Illinois fires Lovie Smith / hires Bret Bielema

All fair points. The general consensus is that defense showed promise. (I agree)

Oline. Having Bleich available was only a hope. Removing luck, Our believed top 5 was Serv,Vett,Dakota,Berg,Tis. 4 were available. Your points on practice stand. Although, it may make it more concerning that our top graded olineman was a FB, that hadn't received Oline coaching since middle school - that may have had limited contact and reps to learn a new position.

How did PFF grades become gospel, in particular college football OL. We have no idea how the coaching staff graded him.

What we do know is that Elmore was moved out as soon as Dakota was fully ready to go, not Tisdale.

There's a reason 32 NFL, and 85 college teams pay PFF. Not perfect, but a useful tool. Cleveland oline coach examined 600 negative PFF plays on his guys, and disagreed with a dozen. Graded the same on the rest. Not perfect, but certainly useful. If you disagree, thats fine.

Per PFF, Tisdale was our highest graded, early on. Elmore back to FB gave the staff another weapon.

Every team faced covid. All covid, opt out, injury excuses...are just that, excuses. You are what your record says you are.

Also, I don't believe in writing off years. This was a laborious, tough season for all teams. Not a lot of fun. It counted though.

Don't forget all the new HC's with complete overhauls who had better success in harder conferences with harder schedules but don't let anyone on the board tell us that

Great it counted. Guess what? Dino still has his job and JW still backs him unequivocally. Further even though it counted in your perspective our AD has come out and said it has been a tough year and unusual year. So even if the fans think it, the AD really doesn't. So where does that leave you? Whether some fans think it counted and some don't, the outcome and fate of Dino going into next season is set.

this seems to be personal with you. Since you joined in late august, knowing everything that was going to happen, why would you do that?

lets not say JW stands with him “unequivocally”

When an AD has to make a statement that the coach isn’t on the hot seat 99% of the time...they are in fact on the hot seat

this is dumb. Of course the games mattered ... like we used them to get a bunch of players some playing time in a new system. But you can’t say this season is the same for ND than it is for us. It’s just not.

Every team enters every year with different goals. In 2018 our goal might have been to win the division and get to a big bowl. In 2020 we went with “get through as many games as we can teetering on the edge of eligibility due to OL numbers”

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. I believe behind closed doors JW was clear with Dino on the season, reviewed his measures for Dino and talked about getting prepared for next season. I believe that JW has no problems at all with going with Dino next season. That doesn’t mean Dino has a free pass next year, it doesn’t mean Dino doesn’t have to change some things and it doesn’t mean that next year JWs position might not change.
The main purpose of my post you referenced though was the decision has been made. Thats it. The whole round about going on about if the season counted, did injuries have an impact, did the lack of a spring impact...it doesn’t matter anymore because all of those discussions where centered on if Dino should come back. Well we have that answer. From the AD and he seems pretty good with it. So maybe its time for the fans to also get on board with it and stop howling at the moon about the garbage season we had and see what the offseason brings. When it’s time to make a change I feel pretty confident that JW, a pretty smart and successful guy will know when that is.

I'm not as down on HCDB, as you. Last year was bad, and he made some changes. I LIKE the defensive changes, and I see promise. On offense, I liked Tucker, and Gilbert using the short game, for the last 2.(please give that to TD)

I think whether Dino is here after next year, depends on what he changes with the offense. We need to establish the run game, and quick reads for TD. We couldn't run against NC state, but Dakota did manage the only passing run block grade for the line, for the year.

I hope Dino finds a way. He's a great personality, and a great representative for the University.

I think this is a good hire. That said, they’re paying him $4 million a year out of the gate. That’s insane money for a not so bad coach.

Are you ready for some meathead football?

Bielema does it about as well as one can though.
Bielma should be a cautionary tale to other coaches. He had the world by the ballz at Wisconsin. Top 12 type of team every year, consistently, quality recruiting, etc. Sure, he couldn't overcome Ohio State, but who can? He got greedy and gave up that well-oiled machine for a shot at SEC money, and learned that the grass isn't always greener.

He’ll do fine. Probably lowers the floor for them by a tiny bit. But it’s not a big swing.

IDK if Meathead is an appropriate term here. His teams have scored a lot of points through the years.

Bilema is a meathead frat bro.
He has a reputation.
He did a good job at Wisconsin rolling with the foundation Barry Alvarez laided down.

Wisconsin is better hands with Chryst than Bilema it’s just Ohio State woke up.

I don’t think Bilema is that great a coach.

LOL. Illini will be the power of the B1G west.
