I was crushed walking out of the Dome this afternoon - really crushed.

We should have won the game by more than 20 points.

And a loss is a loss.

But upon further review, I am very proud of this group of athletes. They could have given up and gotten blown out. Instead, they hung and fought back.

I choose now to take away the guts the team showed and the following: (1) the new offense - love it; (2) the number of players who played today - amazing how many combinations on the DL, LB and secondary; (3) love Ryan Nortan - if we had had him last year we win two more games at least; (4) love Broyld; (5) love Sean Hickey - great feet, balance and agility; (6) really pleased that Rob Trudo played on the OL today; (7) Fisher punted well; (8) I really like the way Christopher Clark runs and catches the ball; (9) really looking forward to watching Eskeridge develope and (10) gotta say it again - this team showed guts against a solid Big Ten team that has been improving for the last ten years.

So, it was a crushing loss - no doubt. Stupid, stupid mistakes that made me crazy.

But, the program took a giant step forward today and that's what I will remember.

I don't feel any better.

I'm done with moral victories. I want numbers in the win column.

much easier to hopefully fix self inflicted mistakes.. but still a couple were just fluky things that happen sometimes.

No giant step forward! Losing games at home vs teams with lesser talent. SU is moving backwards.

A ton of positives to take from this game. We destroyed NW in every column but the win column. Alas, we're 0-1 and maybe it would be alot easier to take if we werent playing USC in Game 2. I think we're all resigned to 0-2. We NEED to make a bowl game this year.

"Moving backwards"

Right.

I have to meet you one of these days.

Very admirable.

Looking for moral victories against a team like Northwestern is pathetic. A game like last year's USC is OK.

Time to win these games and not be self-inflicted victims of poor special teams play and "System" (illegal substitution), discipline (false starts galore) penalties.

Offense looks great...and yet winning games is better.

Did they lose at home!?! SCOREBOARD!! SU Lost! Period. You can try and spin it anyway you want.

Aren't you the guy who gave up his tickets?

Were you even there today?

I understand that winners like you can't fathom a loss - I gather that in your illustrious life there is no place for second place. I guess you have risen to the heights of success socially, professionally, and financially.

Like I said, I would really like to meet you one of these days.

I think many of us could really learn from you.

Oh. One more thing. Aren't you the guy who gave up his tickets?

EDIT: not you OrangePa, but Stern

We were the better team. We outplayed them. We should have won. We looked better losing than we have in other losses, but style points don't get us anything.

I don't feel better. I only feel like we pissed away 1 more opportunity.

Nassib is going to lead this team to some victories this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 2-3 OOC record with a 5-2 BE record.

Gave up my season tickets after 20+ years. And I will just go to individual games. SO? Your point? I am not allowed to go to games? I am not allowed to have an opinion?

Moral Victories are over with. Win or else! It's year 4 and we see the same mistakes we saw when Doug first took over. Horrible Special teams really stands out though. He can't fix that unit in 4 years. Please.

Sure the Orange didn't get the bounces today vs. NW, but I like SU's chances better today vs. Mizzou than I did yesterday. Same with vs. Pitt, RU, Ville and usF.

I feel better about a lot of things after today's game. In no particular order:

--I believe Nassib is going to take it up a notch his senior year.
--I believe that the OL is better than I expected, and will only improve as the inexperienced guys gain PT and Pugh returns.
--I believe that the WR corps is better top to bottom than we've had in years, and this was without Lemon / Stevens [Y TE].
--I believe that Broyld lived up to the advanced billing, and will be even more of a factor as he gains game experience.
--I believe that the RB corps are more that adequate--might not be an individual 1000 yard guy, but they'll get the job done.
--I believe that we can move the ball and score points better than in years, maybe more than a decade.
--I believe that we will win games with this offense. We won't struggle to move the ball this year like in recent years.
--I believe that the defensive speed is impressive.
--I believe that we are better up front than we were in 2010, where we were a top rated group.
--I believe that MPB is the difference maker at DE we needed replacing Chandler.
--I believe that the kicking aspect of ST is improved, especially kickoffs.

There were also some bad things that scare me:

--ST coverage for BOTH punts and kickoffs was a huge disappointment.
--Too many penalties--ugh.
--Too many big plays given up--three in particular killed us, the punt TD, the fluke INT / bit return, and the backward pass debacle.
--Per above, we just don't have the talent differential to withstand spotting the opposition big plays / points like the 21 we gave up today.
--The tackling was disappointing--need to improve. We have speed / depth, but the tackling is unacceptable.

We made a TON of miscues today, all of which cost us the game. The thing is, eliminate even just ONE of those miscues and we win. That's how close it was today.

Still think we get to 6 wins. 7 isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Today reminded me a LOT of that Minnesota game in 1999 where we outgained them by 300 yards and still lost.

I don't know about must win. I guess for a team desperate to get back to a bowl, every winnable game is a must win. But losing today doesn't take us out of bowl contention luckily. Need to eliminate the unforced mistakes and win the games in front of us, and I think we'll be fine.

I wasn't particularly impressed by what I saw from our BE opponents this week. And ranked teams like Iowa / Wisconsin almost lost at home to teams they were expected to handle, too. Today was a missed opportunity, no question about it. How we respond the rest of September / October is going to tell us a lot about this year's team.

GoSU96 said the same thing about that minnesota game...it was 1996 though when McNabb was QB

I walked out of the dome in disbelief that we lost but also proud of the fact that this team did not throw in the towel when they were down 35-13 in the 3rd quarter. For all of us who were at the dome and who have continued to support this program buy purchasing season tickets & making donations to the Ernie Davis Club we got to see one hell of a football game.

It's to bad the referee did not have allow the 22 players on the field to decide the game with less than a minute to go in the 4th quarter, I guess he had a better view than the side judge who was two feet from the play. :bang:

I find it amazing that during the 5 game losing streak last season everyone was calling for Hackett to be fired now after the installation of the new zone read offense which racked up over 500 yards in total offense no one is complaining.

No one is complaining because he changed the old offense to something with which we can win.
