that hopes HCSS gets another year, and as frustrating as this season is right now I woke up today feeling the same way. This team is young and showing promise. Reasonable people differ on this, and I respect anyone who feels like a change is needed. During the preseason and late last season I stuck my neck out a bit and disagreed with some posters about the situation last season on offense. Right now I feel like most posters see pretty much the same thing, but many have different opinions about what needs to be done looking forward. Yesterday, I saw improvement all around, and yet many plays were left on the field. Franklin played really well, but some of the other backers still need that light to turn on more consistently. Ish was great even with one drop, but some of the other skill position players struggled at times. Dungey showed improvement even with the two picks as he was more crisp in his decision making with improved timing and he made some really nice throws. With 5 games remaining anything can happen with this team. This is an opportunity for all involved from the top on down to tune out the noise and keep moving forward working the process from the inside out. Make discoveries and get better during the week and then on game day grind it for a full 60 and let the chips fall where they may. At this point everything else is is commentary.

Nice post.

I think if you look at Eric's improvement week to week - that should give everyone tons of hope.

- after the USF game it was "he missed a bunch of reads in the running game" ... Next game 40% increase and offense looks better. Lester says he focused on it all week.

- after the UVa game it was "he's not throwing it to his hot read when pressured." This week he made Pitt pay for bringing pressure with some nice throws.

Encouraging. Kid is special.

I hope Shafer gets it done at SU and is around for a long time. He seems like a genuinely good guy. Same with the guys on the staff he assembled.

The team is young and it is imperative that there is no regression between now and the end of the year (though defensive regression is somewhat understandable given the players being prematurely pressed into major roles).

At the beginning of the year, I thought this team would lose to LSU, FSU and Clemson, beat CMU and URI, and split with Wake, USF, UVA, PITT, Louisville, NC State and BC (5-7). If we don't get one or two more wins, I would have serious concerns about bringing Shafer back, as I would say the team under performed. New AD. Shafer was a carry-over from the prior regime. SU should definitely not be married to him.

Let's go guys. Win a few more and put this issue to bed.

His hot reads would have looked even better if SwErv would look for the damn ball in time.

I agree, and I tend to agree with most of your posts. I don't know how you do it, and I'm glad you do.

I don't expect a straight line in the development. I can see them having a great game, and then struggling the following week. Yesterday was encouraging. It's anyone's guess how this turns out, and I'll keep watching no matter what.

Evaluate him after year five of his contract. That gives him rest of this season and the next two. With the kids we have now, no reason to see less than 8 wins the next two seasons each.

I'm clearly very much in the pro-Shafer crowd, and even I don't think you need to give him TWO more years before you reevaluate. But I don't think you can truly evaluate a college football coach until after year four.

People forget on our 2nd possession we had 1st down on our 27. Eric threw a long pass down the sideline, and Brisley got called for pass interference before he made the catch. It was a good call by the official, bad play by Brisley, we might have gone up 14-3 early in the 1st Ouarter, a different ball game.

It was the right call. But it was still a pretty ticky-tack penalty. If this were basketball, people would absolutely have understood if the referee just let them play. Bris unfortunately extended his arm a little bit, so it looked like more contact than there actually was.

Yeah, the official saw Estime use him arm in a pushing motion as he separated from the defender, so he threw the flag. I couldn't tell if the defender was holding Estime's jersey, but even if he was the official didn't see that. Difficult play for Estime, but he'll find himself in that situation again and hopefully he'll be able to use that experience.

I am excited about many of the skill positions but is anyone honestly excited about ANY prospects on the offensive line? For that matter, this team is not very deep at all on the DLine.

I am not nearly as optimistic about the future at those positions and I'd really like to see Shafer get some kids in those spots when on the recruiting trail.

Seeing that kid Officer from Rochester play well for Pitt (I understand he is getting some national recognition) drove home point. We don't seem to get ANY prospects on the line that are "great" recruits out of the gate like we see at nearly every other position, even if they are in our back yard (I don't mean to pick on this one situation; just highlighting something we've seen over and over). We see mostly 2 star guys that need several years of work.

Here's hoping some of the younger linemen prove me wrong over the next several years.

I know certain people close to the program have been told that we can probably expect the starting tackles next year to be Cody Conway and Evan Adams. Our FR offensive linemen are apparently really impressive, at least in practice. Obviously, it remains to be seen. But the coaches are very high on them.

Estime was being held and he pushed the guy away. I guess the ref saw the pushback but not the hold. Sucked.
