I'm nervous this is a wake me up in a year situation

It's not fine.

The team is more talented than what you're giving it credit for on paper. You have two McDonald's All-Americans on your roster (Starling, Freeman), one of which was named to the ACC's All-Freshman Team. You have a third-year starter (Bell) who you have basically anointed as the best shooter on your team. And you have a transfer center who was a legitimate P4 player and a guy who started for multiple NCAA Tournament teams.

Carlos, Davis (who I think is good), and Taylor are all overrated by this fan base. So I agree with you there. But to say there's no talent is not true -- and to say the team isn't talented enough to beat LeMoyne by more than 4 points is also not true.

Tournament or bust, that is for sure. And if no tournament, Red Autry should absolutely be put on notice.
The problem is Starling has been a below average Power 5 player for 60 plus games in his career. He hasn’t even matched the guy he replaced from a production standpoint. He needed to improve big time in the offseason for this team and last night he was invisible for 20 plus minutes while playing more poor D.

his McDonald’s all American status is so unrelated to the current status. It’s like having hope for Ryan Leaf because he was a top 2 pick

Well, other than the individual truly/ultimately responsible for having the successor in place running the show, that being ADJW.

When Director of Athletics John Wildhack created a list of potential future head coaches, he reached the same conclusion Autry was ready.

Wildhack said, Autry has been exposed to every aspect of the sport, and that uniquely prepares him for the job. “Adrian earned this,” Wildhack said Friday. “Adrian’s not here because he’s an alum, because he played here, because he’s an associate coach here. He’s here because I believe he’s the best candidate to lead this program and sustain the success that coach Boeheim has established over 47 years.”

Yeah, I don't believe any of that

I think the "is red the right guy" conversation is going to happen end of this year.

The defense last night made me gag so much that i turned off the game. We either are a team that is a collection of one year dudes who can't play man defense or we become a team that can play man2man complimentary that works.

It's concerning to no end. I think we're going to learn how good a coach we had here for 40 plus years. He lasted too long (and i'm not looking to get into that argument) but a hall of fame coach will smooth over alot of deficiencies.
Jim was very good, but he was at his best when we consistently had top 15 classes.

Recruiting is on the upswing so that’s less of a concern. I thought we overall lacked aggressiveness and will last night. Some of that is on the type of players we have, but I also wonder if it’s just the type of personality Red has. He appears quite laid back.

I was extremely grumpy during that entire game. Mostly because I was dreading that we would have a miserable Q4 or whatever loss on our resume right out of the gate.

Now that we escaped, I’m cautiously optimistic. I think Bell/Freeman/Lampkin/Davis has the potential to be one of our better frontcourts in recent memory once they get a few more games under their belts. It’s our guards that concern me. Carlos doesn’t seem like he can shoot, literally at all. I think Starling will be OK. I really hope Cuffe can work his way into 10-15 minutes per game.

Carlos just doesn't look the part AT ALL and that's my biggest worry

I think it's worth mentioning again before the season gets rolling

The schools we beat out for Carlos: Rhode Island, Georgia Tech, LMU, Cal, Virginia Tech, VCU, Temple, Boston College

Yet some here said I was being a Debby Downer suggesting we not compare him to Mark Sears.

I love his game. He would be a tremendous backup, but he'll have to do. 35-37 mins of JC and 38-40 of JJ worries me. A lot.

He was an All-ACC Freshman team member while at ND.

He hasn’t gotten better since he has been at SU. Who is at fault there?

I know its LeMoyne and the competition will get harder quickly, but he did have a 6-to-1 assist to turnover ratio last night.
Carlos was not good last night. He was out of control and did not get his teammates the ball in position to score. He was repeatedly beaten off the dribble. His missed easy looks and clanked a huge free throw.

We missed at least 8 layups. We went 4/22 from 3. We went 20/31 from the line. It's unlikely that will happen again especially with the great looks we got. If we shot the ball at all we easily win by 15 and despite all of that poor shooting we still scored 86. The offense will be fine. The defense is what we should be worried about. Let's see how we do versus Colgate before canceling the season.

I pretty much agree with everything you said except the bold sentence. Wouldn’t six assists and one turnover suggest otherwise?

That point is fair. My response would be that the eye test last night told me he did a lot of dribbling to nowhere and the assists he got did not result in easy baskets. The Lemoyne point guard did more damage off the dribble which allowed his teammates to get easy shots around the basket, including dunks.

Yup, you guys probably know better than I. Point is, I do think JB wanted it to stay in-house. But I certainly don’t know enough to disagree on this point.
Agree, he wanted it to stay in-house. But credible reports were he wanted Gerry to get it, not necessarily as a knock against Autry, but just his preference. This was apparent to me going back 10-11 years when JB was a guest on Michael Kay's show Center Stage on the YES Network. At the end of the hour interview Kay asked most of his guests the same series of questions. One was if you were in a foxhole and could have only one other person with you who would it be? JB's response was Gerry McNamara. Michael Kay was surprised and asked JB why. JB's response was something like: Because he's the toughest person I know. And that's how GMac played and will probably coach now at Siena. JB likely wanted that toughness coaching at SU. The last time I looked you could find that Michael Kay interview of JB on YouTube. If not the whole interview at least a segment that includes this question. Based on GMac's first heading coaching win Monday night, in OT, he's likely exhibited that toughness already.

Hop was tough too. He didn’t kill it as a HC…

I'll reserve judgement until non-conference play is over.
yeah me too...this is basically pre-season if you think about (even though the games count)

only logical tht the team will take some time to gel and figure things out

would I want them to hit the ground running and start off with blowouts ? yes clearly...the teams that blow out the lemoynes of the world tend to be the top ranked teams and the ones involved in the tourney

is it a good sign that the team is struggling to play cohesively together? no

i kinda wonder wht thyve been doing at practice all summer...

but there is a lot of raw material for red to work with here.

the key for me will be how he solves the apparent issues: PG seems to be too weak athletically, team defense seems non-existant, lack of schemes and strategies, how is he going to divvy up playing time...

i think he can solve these issues but there's no guarantee he will.

i just say i expected better given what we've heard all off season...but again...this is bsically preseason if you think about it...these guys have never played together in acutal games...they will need time...

very similar to last year in that this team will likely peak in feb / march...will it matter by then though?

in this era there is no luxury to oly start playing well by the time conference season starts

is this a feature of red's coaching...taking months to get up to speed? or is it just a sign of the times?

whatever the answer to that will go a long way in determining reds fate as su coach, imo

if every season of red takes many months to play good basketball it wont work out for him long term at su as head coach, imo

I think it's always good to breathe and take a step back -- good or bad. So I'm with you on both counts, trying not to get too bent out of shape. But I will say I think the tournament feels like a reach for this group and my bigger worry than that is actually that I'm a bit concerned about Red long-term. Not a 'fire red!!!!' post, just curious to see what our adjustments are and how we proceed in terms of accentuating the positives and trying to scheme around the deficiencies. Whether that means 12-13 wins or 20 is still a question I'm pondering, but if it wound up being a bad season where the roster didn't come together the way he hoped I can live with a bad season. Hopefully, in that scenario, he can find ways to put better rosters together going forward. But it's more that I was really hoping to see some significant strategic adjustments this year and in one tiny sample, we didn't see that.
Sounds just like the people who were saying Fran and the football team were in trouble after the 1st game.
Give it a rest, until they have played 4 or 5 games.

When we get a transfer PG from Duke or UConn to run this team and generate some excitement that will be a good comparison. If the football team almost loses to Holy Cross, then it’s a good comparison. Otherwise, no. Red’s team has as much buzz as a ginger ale that has been sitting on the counter for a week.

fair enough. I agree -- think we'll have a better idea then for sure. But the concerns I have, just so we're clear, date back to last year. So not a one-game sample in terms of our defensive philosophy. But, to your point, that could adjust and tweak and improve as we go. So it'll be interesting to watch.

Thank you. The H0T Takes are crazy. It’s one game. Cannot look at the exhibition games because Red was playing multiple lineups.
These takes remind of the posts saying Davis will get limited playing time.
Clearly there are things that need to improve upon but people need to stop the chicken little sky is falling until they see more games.
Enjoy that we get to watch both su football and basketball right now. May not win every game but we get to watch our team.

I like Red and what he’s trying to do. But, he has shown no ability to coach defense after thirty plus games. There‘s no accountability or defensive plan. I also don’t like an offense that just runs around until someone jacks it up. I want an offense that utilizes his best players in getting the ball to their spots and limits lesser skilled players from taking shots that they should never take. That’s what good coaches do. It’s called playing with urgency on defense and with a purpose on offense. I don’t like leaving offense to chance (not Chance).
