imagine if teams played man d

There were also games we did play very well in the second half. Neither however means we went into the locker room, took a leak and went back out on the court.

We just never really put together two great halves this season. Our offense was so inconsistent and with this group particularly , our defensive effort wasn’t effective or focused enough to overcome severe scoring droughts.

I challenge you to name one second half adjustment JB has ever made, or at least in the last 15 years since he started to mail it in...besides the strategy to lighten everyone's bladder in the hopes they'll be quicker to get out on shooters with said lighter bladder.

LOLOL. Not even going to take the time. Go listen to some of JBs pressers after a win, especially if we were losing at halftime.

If you don't cover people they make shots. When zones face good shooters they are supposed to expand to cover them. if they don't, the coach yells at them, as JB frequently does. If you aren't covering guys in a zone, you won't cover them in a man-for-man, either.

The purpose of pointing out that a man for man proved vulnerable in a particular game is just to show that it's no guarantee that you will stop three point shooting in that defense.

Made defensive adjustments to shut down the St Bonnies guard who was killing us in the first half last year.

Has anyone here ever made that claim?

Clemson?

NC State and GT were one possession games at the half that turned into blowouts.

We played like crap those entire games. Probably because we werent that good. Sometimes you cant shine a turd, or make chicken salad out of chicken poo.

If Va Tech went to zone last night to throw a wrinkle in things they may have caught Duke off guard and won.

Guess I didn’t use the correct font. Thought the post was sufficiently ridiculous that it would be recognized as sarcasm.

I find the all we do at halftime is take a piss argument, even if JB may once said something along those lines, to be so incredible as to not be taken literally.

then they wouldnt give up 17 3s and lose..

oh wait..
this comment reveals a lack of nuance in interpreting anti-zone commentary...the nuance is there...you just haven't seen it yet.

man defense can be DESTROYED just like a 2-3 can...

SOME teams - a la 2019 UVA - are much more likely to go off on a 2-3 than a good man to man team with size...

i would argue that 2019 UVA is better suited to beat a 2-3 zone than a good man to man defense...

most teams are not constructed to be better vs zone than man - but some are.

you need a specific recipe to be a ZONE KILLER:

good 3 point shooting, good ball movement/passing, size and rebounding, interior passing...

not many teams have all of the ingredients - but the ones that do - a la pitt under jamie dixon, villanov undrr wright, uva under bennett, unc under roy, louisville under pitino, etc...DECIMATE THE ZONE with regularity...

hmmmm...seems those teams have had SUs nu,ber over the years and have won a lot of championships over SU too...hmmmm

against the teams that do not have all of the necessary zone-busting ingredients---the zone is awesome.

also - i would argue that certain players on SU have been very good zone defenders and some havent - john gillon was pretty bad, for example - when there are 1 or 2 bad defenders in the zone - it becomes a sieve.

thanks!!!!!

I’m content playing the zone as our base defense the majority of the time, I just want to have the flexibility to switch to man under certain circumstances.

Hope this wasn’t too controversial of a post.

stop being so reasonable.

Gimme token pressure to cost the other team shot clock time and get an occasional turnover and break away against sloppy teams. Then we can easily drop back in a zone that should be active out front with corner traps. Then we should look to run every time we get a steal, a block, a defensive rebound or the other team celebrates making a basket and an opening presents itself, (much like UNC). And when we run we should pass- hit the open man instead of playing hero ball on the fast break.

What is this post?

Dixon and Bennett have championships plural?

It seems the point is largely being missed.
If something isn't working then you need to find an alternative.

Maybe Virginia was so hot that nothing would have stopped their barrage of 3's.
But they were bombing the zone whether their shots were covered or wide open.
It would be nice to be able to try something else to at least disrupt their floor plan.

What's the quote attributed to Einstein?
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

What did Einstein think of doing something you haven't practiced instead of something you have?

And besides, Einstein never said that. It's a myth that he did.

It's a good saying though, even if it doesn't mean we should switch from man-to-man when the zone isn't working.

conf champs/ regular season champs (now final fours)...maybe dixon doesn't (not sure) but the point stands.

man to man defense is played by virtually every high school kid from grade six up. zone is typically taught later. don't pretend we have to "teach" kids to body up and play man. in fact we must be "teaching" it out of them if they can't play it. absurd.

YO YO YO ... switch to ZONE !
