In my opinion, I do not want the court moved for duke

Perfect. Out of all the misguided, foolish possibilities, this would be the worst.

Damn.

IF THIS IS TRUE...

I will still go, I will still root for Syracuse. But the SU athletic department
deliberatedly and willfully misled me, waiting to broach the topic and start the process until a couple of days after season ticket renewals were due.

I find this kind of behavior to be highly unprofessional, disgraceful and a slap in the face to a long time supporter of the program and the university.

I can understand the Georgetown athletic department treating SU fans like this. I did not expect it from the Syracuse athletic department.

Will you still get season tickets next year? That is the biggest question.

Yes, this isn't unfolding in the ideal way and I can understand your anger. But you yourself just stated you would still go. The university will hear your complaints, but here is the deal (and they are right), what else are you going to do?

It IS the only horse in town. And if the university and the ACC can make this an "event", increase revenue and garner publicity, believe me (and I know you are aware), it is happening.

We've sold our soul for big time athletics. As Puff Daddy said, "Mo' Money, Mo Problems".

You can look back at my record in supporting the efforts to be "Syracuse's team" before we were "NY's team". I'm a proponent of keeping more football games at Syracuse (again, see my postings in the past). But this is something that features Syracuse, features our program and puts us front and center for the college bball world.

My complaint, if I were in your shoes, wouldn't be whether this happens. It would be getting a bigger compensatory package than anything more than a "sorry, we understand, but we couldn't pass up this opportunity. Here is a food voucher".

Just because they messed up the process of implementing this, doesn't mean they should not do it.

This
This game represents a unique opportunity to garner publicity and creed.
What does this sentence even mean?
You're putting way too much emphasis on this one game. It means far more for recruiting and for the program to reach a Final 4 than one game, played sideways in January, that breaks OUR OWN record for crowd size.

Basically what you just said, speaking for SU, is that who cares how the donors feel, they'll get over it. We can have our cake and eat it too.

Bait and switch is not a good business decision in the long run.

I thought Buzz Shaw was gone.

creed refers to street creed. being the biggest draw is street creed. final 4 and biggest draw are not mutually exclusive. Both of them are image boosters.

Bees, I get why you would be angry. Believe me. I was a student when Buzz did the "Get a life" statement.

I'm not arguing that you don't have a true and valid argument.

My point is that I don't think you have as much pull as you are intimating (and if I'm overestimating your application of influence, let me know).

I also think that once we went all in on big biz college sports, all bets are off for caring about the local folks (not that it is out the window, more to the degree it is invested in).

Again, you can look back at my postings. I'm a staunch supporter of moving games for football to the Dome as much as possible. I'm a proponent of putting together an outreach team for those in the Syracuse area.

I'm not saying you are wrong. There is no right answer.

What I am saying, is that I think you are basically screwed. And that my tactics, in your positions, would be going for as large a compensatory package as possible.

I respect you Mike but I don't understand how any rationale person thinks this move makes sense.

I haven't seen a single good reason for doing it but there are a dozen compelling reasons not to. Probably more. No need to repeat them.

To answer your question, I will buy season tickets again next year. I would probably even buy season tickets if they permanently changed the configuration of the Dome and left the court in the middle of the football field, surrounded by 2 rows of fans and 50 yards of nothing (what a spectacle for television!).

That doesn't make it right to steal from me. And assuming this happens, I will have had my seat stolen and replaced with one of significantly lesser value. The people that think otherwise are either incredibly naive or lack any understanding of basic math. As Bees says, it is physically impossible to provide me with a seat that is better or approximately the same as the one I bought 10 days ago (it was actually renewed several months ago).

Assuming this happens, am I going to give as much money to the university as I normally do? For athletics and academics? Will I buy extra season tickets for football just to support the program? Will I give as much money with my next donation for the IPF than I was originally planning to?

Again, assuming this move happens, in the end, I will probably give the same amount of money to SU, but it will go to the LC Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science instead of the athletic department.

This isn't the first time local supporters of the athletic department have been slighted. The games at MetLife, the attempts to move ACC basketball games to MSG, the dropping/scaling down of the ED scrimmage, the dramatic scaling down of the national letter of intent reception, the restructuring of benefits for Orange Club members that always ends up taking away things instead of adding things... The list of things the athletic department has done over the last 10 years to discourage fans is disturbingly long.

If you want my money, you should act like you care about me.

Just to he clear about one thing, I don't think I have any pull.,

Gotcha.

Separately, why does this have more momentum now than any other point in time in the past? Hasn't this idea been floated for years?

The whole argument of setting an on campus record crowd is a little crazy. Nobody can break our record now with an on campus facility. Nobody is going to build an on campus facility in the future that will have the capability to break the record.
This is little short of a money grab coupled with PR that is only slightly higher than it would be for this game if the court wasn't moved.
If you just want to say you were part of a spectacle, go to ARods last game at Yankee stadium.

Seems like the number of 30K+ has fallen since the late 80s/early 90s. This bring me back to the question:

Is 50K for a regular season basketball game even possible?
My opinion.

Unless they discount the tickets severely, and thus screw the season ticket holders again, there is no chance this is going to happen.

What we do have, two crowds in the 34K range since 1980?

The games are all on TV locally now. The economy is bad, the seats available will all be bad and the opponent is Duke (sorry, don't see the draw for a regular season game against the Dukies as a bigger draw than say, the last home conference game ever against Georgetown).

The only thing that could make it happen is if Duke can bring 15K of fans to the game. I don't think there are enough Duke fans who are stupid enough to spend big bucks on an awful seat to make this happen but I haven't met many.

Maybe they will surprise me.

Hey Duke fans, can you see bringing 15K of your horde to this game?

Many are guessing about 42k for attendance.

There is a very high probability that this will not sell out. You've done the math to support this idea. It's already embarrassing to create this much of a circus just to play Duke, but combined with the potential embarrassment of all the hype and then feature TV shots of silver seats? Even the student section will look pathetic, unless they are able to fill in enough of the huge gap to be effective. Oh Lord

This is so colossally stupid on so many levels that I can't imagine seriously considering it.

I'm thinking that since this is all about the event, the spectacle, TV and not about money, we should take a different stance.

No public sale of tickets for this individual game. None. Nada.

Give all season ticket holders/donors 2 free tickets per seat to use as they see fit.

I remember the old days when they said on the radio during SU games..."It's time for a Bill Orange break." What exactly did that mean?

It meant that it was time for Bill Orange, Sr. to whip up a new pitcher of Manhattans!

This went over my head

Excuse my ignorance

We all have senior moments.
