Incredibly poor start, piss poor FT shooting, and too many turnovers

Also 5 of 21 from three. Hideous shooting from deep all game long.

Maybe the 15 minutes this team actually played well will spark them. I sure hope so.

But there’s soooo many holes. Lots of guys who should be 8th/9th rotation players but have to get minutes.
Even a small improvement in shot selection would greatly improve those numbers. 5-15 from 3 would be more palatable.

Needs to be some accountability for the wrong guys shooting the wrong shot at the wrong moment.

Probably the guy that had one of the top 5 three point shooting seasons in school history last year.
I mean I agree he's a very good shooter and we need him to score to win, but replace him with like an Elijah Hughes (a second rounder who's not made it in the nba; not talking about Melo here), even Hughes' his second to last year not his first team all acc year, and we blow out the first 3 teams and win last night comfortably.

Look at the heat this fan base gave Buddy. Theoretically he’s the same player as Bell. Although, I’ll contend Buddy was a much much better player overall he still was routinely razed here. I’m personally not a Bell guy, he’s just way too one dimensional.
Buddy did more with way less.

We need to find a way to get Lampkin, Freeman, and David on the court at the same time. They’ll all contribute more than Bell if he’s not making shots.

Start them with Choppa and JJ and bring Bell in as 6th man for shooting.

I don't like piling on players, and this isn't directed at you, but Bell is absolutely infuriating. He is an AWFUL defender, if he handles the ball too much he's a turnover machine, and he rebounds like my grandmother. Ok, he's a great shooter...but is he? I know, I know he had a great shooting year last year. It just seems like the vast majority of his threes are catch and shoot. How many times does he run off screens to get open and hit a 3? How many times does he create anything for himself outside the arc? I understand he's a good shooter, but I think he's inconsistent and I think last year will be far from the norm for him. Rant over.

His last name was the main reason for most of that criticism.

What shocks me is how bad of a free throw shooter Bell is.

I saw glimpses of a decent offense and then it looked like Boeheims offense most of the game. The lack of movement and picks on and off the ball annoy me to the nth degree.

Posted a bunch of this sporadically in the other threads. But after seeing the team in person, here are my takeaways:

Eddie: is hurt. Period. Guy plays with heart and tries hard and is good at what he can do. I’m now a huge fan of his. I’ve come around. However, he is 1) not in shape and 2) is hurt. I’m sure the two are related and he hasn’t been able to get into his best shape. He wasn’t out for initial warmups. He was working his leg and his back when he wasn’t in. When he walked, he had a limp. I take back all my doubts about him from an effort standpoint. However, we have to get the most out of him in the spurts he can play bc he is not healthy. But it was awesome when we were coming back. He was getting the crowd fired up, dapping up Melo and Kiyan, and getting into it with a few UT guys. Didn’t go to him fast enough a lot of times. Or enough times. He needs more touches and he has to be our facilitator more as a point of emphasis.

Jyare: he’s a baller. Needs to be on the floor. He was our best guy moving without the ball. Anticipation level is off the charts. Right-time-right-place type. Like a poor man’s CJ Fair in that respect. BBIQ is awesome.

Donnie: he was cooking when he had a mismatch. His talent is starting to come thru. His shot is still funky a bit in the release. They’ll easily fix it at the next level. He has to play more.

Choppa: same as I’ve said before, not scared. Will need PT to grow. He’s a fighter. Want him to start taking minutes.

Lucas: defense all day. Was in Tre’s shirt. Was getting into it a bunch with him that the cameras didn’t show.

JJ: downhill-all-day should be his mantra. Good at angles, release point, body control.

Carlos: over it.

Bell: most has been discussed. A few final things from me: he needs to be reduced as a focus on O. His decision making when he gets the ball is too slow by a beat - thinking vs doing. He picks up his dribble too soon. And, in person, his lack of strength/slightness is startling. He gets bullied off ball a lot. Not saying he is a bad kid. But he looked like someone who was playing basketball bc he was supposed to, not bc he wanted to.

Coaching: I know the zone had them shook, but they missed some open looks right at the switch of it. With that said, our initial M2M was a complete joke. The coaching isn’t good enough on the defensive end and has to get better. However that comes to bear.

On offense, we absolutely need to push more. We need to be into our action before the other team gets set as much as possible. It allows Eddie to get a spot and big boy his defender and it allows JJ to find seams to get downhill.

Overall: loved the fight in this team. Loved it. I don’t think Carlos can start. He just isn’t capable at this level and it was clear as day in person. The length of runway Bell is getting for his level of effort is astounding. Red needs to reward the guys that are going to fight til the death to win.

I know FTs are the story, but going forward, Eddie, Donnie, JJ, Jyare, Lucas, Choppa have to be constantly in the rotation with big minutes. When Eddie is in, they have to either feed him or bring him up top to help run the O. He and Donnie can high / low. JJ needs the ball when we push to try to get into the seams and get that running one handed he has up way more.

There were clear moments where Eddie, Donnie and JJ, individually, were cooking their guys and the defenders KNEW it.

Lucas wiped the smile right off Tre’s face when he was in. Lucas brings the fight.

Red has some changes to make, but this team should be better.

The refusal of some to simply say “I was wrong“ is astounding.

CHRIS BELL CAN‘T/DOESN’T REBOUND OR PLAY DEFENSE.

if you still debate this, you don’t understand basketball. I’m sorry, that’s where we are at with this.
I believe Scooch is agreeing with you. I think his point is, if he’s not shooting well, he shouldn’t be playing.

At this point, I think it’s where we all are. I’m to the point that I think we should quickly pivot to Davis for Bell if Bell hasn’t done anything by the 16:00 mark. Go big. I’d give Carlos more string because I don’t like the other options unless Westry shows out.

Glad to see the zone last night and Naheem. We’ll see. Last night proved nothing to me.

Awesome write up. Are there enough minutes for all those players though or at least the positions they play.

We have a backlog at the 4 needing Davis and Freeman on the floor at all times. We have minutes that Bell needs to give up and go to someone else but who is that? Who can get more run at the 3?

Carlos mins have been cut in half already to 20 and I expect them to be cut more especially as he chokes late in games and on the line. We need Taylor playing lock down defense on their best ball handler but he isn't doing alot on offense. More run for Choppa, but finding that right time is tricky.

Freeman can shoot, play him at the 3 and bring Bell off the bench.

Or move Bell to guard and play zone with this group. How much worse could it be?

Syracuse is a relic. Everyone else on earth had learned to shoot the ball and we specialize in low percentage 2s. Our most legendary outside shooter shot 35% for his career

I'm very tired of it

Most of this is unnecessary. I don't think there is a reason to say "I was wrong" when players can develop. Some people just aren't as pessimistic.

I agree with the second sentence if you remove can't

To say "if you debate this you don't understand basketball" is obtuse.

I don't understand why everything is so absolute. Do I feel he will play D better, probably not but he is fully capable. Whether it's him ball watching with no feel or just a refusal to keep up intensity while he is on the court is up the coaches to get sorted.

I'm pleased that after getting down big, instead of folding out players fought all the way back and had a chance to win.

But damn -- talk about shooting ourselves in the foot...

9 for 18 from the FREE THROW line -- and they call them "free" points for a reason -- in a close loss, is tough to fathom.

I am very pleased that we saw a team that can play effective m2m defense.

PG is a huge problem.

Other than that eliminate stupid mistakes, make FT's and open shots at a higher percentage.

This game gave me some hope that we can be competitive against tournament level teams.

By every metric Lampkin, Davis, and Freeman have been our 3 best players so far. Starling is the best guard. I don't think Bell will play this bad forever, but we shouldn't be scared to sit him. Can those guys co-exist and still be productive? I don't know, but it can't be worse than what we are doing now.

Andy was a good shooter, Devo was a good shooter, Gerry was a good shooter.
They all also helped the team in other ways.
Bell does one thing, and if he isn't hitting the three, he should sit.

As someone who's suffered from on and off back pain for decades, the back and leg issues for Lampkin is likely related. It has to be some kind of pinched nerve due to a disc issue or spondylosis. Hopefully it's just a flare up and eventually they can figure out to get the pain to go away for an extended period. When it's bad it is bad, but it can go away with conservative management. His weight certainly doesn't help though.

Not specific to your post just picked one to respond to.

Most everything has been covered and think Mike nailed it on a lot of things.

One modestly positive note I took is that last night was the full Texas team as up to this point Mark had been out and he’s a very big and talented piece this year and despite that we still should have won. Tonight is huge. Can’t lean on a good effort and come up short. Bring it again but do so from the jump and rely less on Eddie more on others and there is something to put some hope on.
