Inside Syracuse’s rough off-season: How portal misses and a lack of NIL money led to a lost year

Pretty rough public article for our kids to read before the season, regardless if it is fair or not. Would have liked to see this posted after the season at least. They still have games to play. This article basically said they all suck and are underperforming and the coaching sucks as well and could be blamed as well.
Anyone care to summarize?

I hope they're not just beating a dead horse with injuries.

What does it say about Chris Bell? 40% to not making a 3 for a whole month. The rest not making free throws to save their lives or shooting 20% less than their career averages. Defense alone should've been enough to sit most of our guys most of the season but then we wouldn't be able to field 5 guys.

Surely we have to part ways with even the guys that can return that are part of a rotten core.

But it certainly feels like the university exposes themselves to much bigger risks than they realize by underfunding athletics, then are shocked when things implode on them.

Yes, if revenues collapse, several sports will have to be dropped, or at least turned into non-scholarship clubs. That's not going to go over well.

Very transparent from Georgia on how they are going to use the 20.5M

Yes very transparent ha. Now for the other perks they get in SEC land creating an uneven playing field.

Feel free to keep hammering me on just how stacked the deck is against us with the money. These articles go on and on.

That's going to be the model most schools use, as it mimics the House settlement parameters.

I do wonder if that's the proper distribution for SU.

I think Fran would probably freak out if it were distributed another way, but MBB getting a higher percentage at SU would make sense in my eyes.

74% FB
20% MBB
3% WBB
3% Other

That's $900K more per year for MBB and could help significantly.

Need to prioritize the cash cow - and get a coach in who can do the job, too.

The "kids" are making a lot of money to be bad.

Yup very enlightening. Those are definitely the norm last year yet this year they are all sitting 5th in the same midmajor conferences this year.

I thought it was all about coaching so why are they no where near the bubble this year?
Well Dusty May left FAU for Michigan and 3 of their best players went to Michigan, Arky, and UF

I do think Syracuse will just follow the standard model and not do anything crazy out of line.

How are they so unprepared?? Did they think this stuff only applied to football LOL Everyone should be fired.

Like I said they are always reacting. They are never out in front of anything.

For those asking about distribution- I was told initially basketball is getting $4m of the 20. Let’s see if that comes to fruition

Haven’t seen this brought up, but one of the dumbest things the school did was shut down every alum’s Syr.edu email address.

They had a way to mass message every alum to ask for donations big or small. Now they presumably have to build up every outreach list from scratch.

It will be interesting to see where that 1.3M will come at the expense of and if they actually share? They wouldn't take it from FRAN and football would they? That would seem silly at this point, football needs every dollar they can get as well.

I doubt there's anyone here who won't acknowledge that SU is much more challenged in this Player Compensation era (and in the Facilities Arms Race era that preceded it) than other power conference schools.

I mean, that's a water is wet thing that we've been discussing on these forums for literally 3 decades.

The concern is that SU basketball is dramatically underperforming this season relative to its compensation budget. Even if we were dead last in P5 NIL (and we're not, we're at least in the top half of the ACC), we should be hovering around 75th in NET ranking. That would be "batting our weight" in terms of NIL.

Yet we're almost twice as bad as that.

Question. I understand that in football the roster can be 105 max. Also, that there are no longer walk ons. That every player is a full scholarship student athlete,
If that is the case, doesn't it make sense to shrink the size of the roster. Cut out 25 scholarships' Have a roster of 80 to 85 players and pay them well. Not sure if we need 105. Reduce rosters and pay the players on the roster more. Do that for Football and Men's Basketball.

Agree with you on all fronts. Maybe the only thing that's happening more and more is that the state courts and legislatures in these states places are all colluding together with their state universities to keep ahead of the sports game, while we play it safe like others have said.

Also on the 75th Net thing and kenpom no denying that. My personal opinion is that when the tourney chances went to zero (went 3-8 in that noncon stretch) this team checked out. Couldn't even dribble the ball down the court against Maryland, terrible games against ND and GTown, they knew they were not getting anywhere and most knew they were not coming back here either graduating or just done.

Autry and Staff were not up to the task either to keep them motivated, we saw a glimpse here or there like in Cali of trying to wake them up with pregame full speed warmups or probably some other gimmicks but the guys on the team just didn't care and coaches did not nip the problems when they had the chance early on.

I'm expecting the metrics to slide further and further, which we pretty much saw happen continually with a low point at Miami. Tracking Net and kenpom metrics when the team is already in a freefall isn't really telling us much besides they are not good at all phases of the game anyway.

yup, in season.
Maybe I’m just imagining things (and if I’m wrong I’m sorry) I but I swear one of our trusted sources here had previously stated that red didn’t like going around asking for money and that he didn’t even really start doing it much until offseason leading up into this season. Which, If true, was insane because that means an entire off season and season passed without doing much if any of that.

I hope you're wrong.

Well, it's 50 years of history, so I would expect the same thing.
Danforth was replaced by an assistant coach in 1975.
Coach Mac was replaced by an assistant coach in 1991.
Boeheim was replaced by an assistant coach in 2023.
For lax and women's hoops, we hire alumni.

Gerg was a supposed glamor hire, but it was because Mr. Two Phones knew him through the USC connection.

Have we ever done an actual national search in the last 50 years?

Wow, this article is even more unflattering than yesterdays.
It also shows how talent depleted this roster really is. It’s worse than I originally imagined. Coaching obviously hasn’t helped. Totally utter failure in the portal.

I think the approach is with more scholarships, you have a better chance of success developing guys out of HS (which is under recruited) and then you focus on using money to retain the guys that work well. The ones that don't move on elsewhere or are practice bodies. To me, the ROI and math makes sense.

If we can only have 85 scholarships, we can't be as aggressive in HS recruiting and have less room for error. If you're a factory, you don't have to worry about that. I think our approach makes sense and is certainly different than others.

We were told by some in 2021 on this board that we were ahead of it. Was that incorrect?

Dino.

But yeah - most of our coach hires for the big jobs are already in the SU pipeline. FLJ. Q was an assistant.
