Inside Syracuse’s rough off-season: How portal misses and a lack of NIL money led to a lost year

People need to stop pretending that Weitsman was a big donor. As it was pointed out, he bought he was giving less to the program than guys like Lobdell. That 100k he gave Siena might match what he did before he walked away from SU.

He's nothing like Repole at St John's who is pumping 7 figures into Pitino's program. Red might not be the right HC but the problems at SU lie above his head.

8-9 SU athletes across 3 sports would kinda disagree. But yes, he wasn’t Repole.

Why would they disagree? The claim is that he wasn't a big donor. Did he give those athletes big money? Or a few hundred grand? I believe its the latter. Which is nice. But his reputation is as a billionaire dispensing huge sums. He didn't do that. Aside from his really nice suite at the Dome.

Everything I’ve heard it was close to $1m. Also, while they don’t publish it anymore, SU used to put out a booklet of all donors. His company was often one of the top.

Wasn’t it pretty well known that for the upcoming year before he was seen to the door, that he publicly was offering $1M to football and $1M bball? Now I know it’s all talk, and it didn’t come to fruition as we know. But I mean I think that’s kinda substantial no? That buys you a good QB and like a Jesse Edwards/malik Mack combo for example

This^^^^

Respectably competitive is our target at this point.

The years of top 10 teams and top 4 seeds in the tournament are behind us.

It sucks to say out loud, but it's ok to admit.
Im sure similar was said by Louisville bball fans the last couple seasons.

Shrewsberry is terrible.
well when Langel was mentioned, I was just hoping we would be willing cast a net outside of Central NY. Gosh, if Langel why does this school want to have the most restricted head coach search imaginable. Now that I think of it, maybe it was the LeMoyne coach that was evaluated.

We had a horribly unexciting list of potential Dino replacements and then we made a hire out of left field that seems to have been one of the best coaching hires the school has made in a long time.

I want to believe that JW will actually perform a national search, but I also think we might end up with GMac or a Langel.

Horrible!?

Dont talk bout Dan Mullen like that!

Notice how they allowed 2 seasons of it and pulled the plug.

Also, FWIW, as bad as Syracuse has been under Autry this year, Payne was worse at Ville... that is saying something.

Also, they are not a top 10 team.

Jobs unlikely to open (this year)

Syracuse Orange

It's only Year 2 for Red Autry, which seems early for someone filling the shoes of Jim Boeheim, who spent 47 years on the sideline for the Orange. They are 11-16 overall, and 5-11 in the ACC, but won 20 games last season and have two top-35 recruits coming in next season.

Appreciate the reply, Bees!

You think they will never be top 10 or a top 4 seed ever again? Not just this year, but ever again? That's what "behind us" means. They are ranked 19th now. It could even happen this year for them if things break the right way. And that is with worse years than us this year, like you say.

If we get a coach who is quality all this talk of our best days being behind us will stop instantly. I guess if Red ends up being our coach for as long as JB was then you have a point.

They started over and put big money behind Kelsey in a very coordinated way.

I am not saying we won't be competitive again with the right coach, just that I doubt we'll spend the money it will take to be a perennial bluechip/top 10 caliber program year in, year out, that's all.

No, I don't accept that premise just because "On3" or twitter sources say so.
It's their same fan sites and local media that are saying what their players are getting, same as here, just like how it's pretty well known what Jesse or Maliq got to leave or Eddie got to transfer in.

Do you at least agree the # for Jones at Marquette has an extra digit on it and is 7 figures, while the #'s here are 6 figures?

If not I don't know what to tell you. You're living in the past and might as well be bucketed in with the group of people that Waters wrote about in his article being unprepared for the NIL space last Spring. Just because you don't "believe" players are getting what is being written online or that they deserve that much doesn't make it not true. I'd argue players are actually getting more in perks on top of these $'s (like cars) and that doesn't make it into the reporting.

People bashing Autry all day here about how he was clueless about talent and NIL and yes he was. What annoys me is then in the next post the same people don't want to believe other programs are giving their entire starting 5's 1 mil each or their best players 1.5 or 2 mil or more.

Autry is a crap coach and was unprepared all year and still is but this perception that other programs and coaches succeeded this year by magically figuring things out without the money faucet flowing is just false.

And yea You can downvote me and hit me with kenpom metrics all day and I agree he's underperforming a ton with the budget he had and deserves to go. However Very few coaches took the budget we had and are making the tourney even with stellar coaching under ideal circumstances ie hitting homeruns in the portal and avoiding injuries.

The most glaring example of this of course is a 3-4 bid ACC league, where the middle 10 teams including us all said ehh 2 mil is prob enough to put a team on the bubble and get in. Then the entire ACC got absolutely slaughtered in the SEC/ACC challenge.

No it’s not. The numbers here are posted by insiders HERE. They are not from evaluation sites. Pretty sure On3 didn’t include Eddie’s car in the number

I’d agree Jones is 7 figures. Lampkin is high 6 figures. It’s not that big of a difference.

I’m going to go on a limb and say Jones is not the second highest paid player in cbb. I mean ffs Zach Edey didn’t even get a million last year. Bacot got 900k. Ballo got a huge deal from Indiana and it was in the 1.3 million range. UConn didn’t even have 4 million to spend last year. JJ Starling had a valuation of 400K on ON3 two years ago and we aren’t even paying him that.

On3 was wrong about nearly everyone of our players on the high end, but we’re supposed to treat them as gospel.

HINT: those sites are working with the agents

On3 is owned by the rivals dude who clearly has ties with the shady underbelly of college sports

Again, no sources. The only confirmation of NIL buckets I’ve seen for BE schools was UConn having a little over 3.5 million last year and the rumor that Georgetown had 5 million yet somehow they still suck.
They are much better this year and our moving in the right direction.

Well wasn't the Fran search a call from Fran to Wildhack? I have no confidence in his ability to conduct a national search or the school's interest in doing one. They will hire a cheap, under the radar guy who will be propped up as the Fran of hoops.
