Facing a budget crisis, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards says higher education in the state could be compromised. And that includes the possibility of college athletics in Louisiana being canceled.

In a statewide televised address Thursday, Edwards said campuses could run out of money and be forced to shut down in April, highlighting the LSU football team as one of the potential losses from massive cuts to higher education funding.

"If you are a student attending one of these universities, it means that you will receive a grade of incomplete, many students will not be able to graduate, and student-athletes across the state at those schools will be ineligible to play next semester," Edwards said, according to The Times-Picayune. "That means you can say farewell to college football next fall."

The Democratic governor is pushing for tax increases to help make up a $940 million budget deficit by the end of June. He said Louisiana could be forced to cut vital health services as well.

"These are not scare tactics. This is reality," Edwards said. "An unstable state budget will not only hurt children and working families in our state, it will devastate communities, businesses and local government as well."

Some Republicans are unhappy with the size of the governor's proposals, the newspaper reports.

"Gov. Edwards is proposing to implement the largest tax increase in the history of Louisiana," treasurer John Kennedy said in a rebuttal. "It will wreck our economy, already fragile."

If lawmakers find a solution to keep colleges open and save the Tigers' 2016 season, a similar problem looms for the following fiscal year, when Louisiana faces a $2 billion budget shortfall, according to The Times-Picayune.

LSU fb isn't going away (or be adversely impacted in any way) for SO many reasons. It's just being mentioned as a scare tactic.

No doubt but it's interesting to see how this could play out at other schools as states continue to face serious budget issues.

Boosters were ready to throw $15M at Les Miles and Co just to make him go away. I have no doubt that LSU football will be just fine.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling...

Never mind the fact that kids would simply transfer and most schools would allow the credits and the NCAA would waive the rule to sit out one year (same as for death penalty), etc. Never mind the truth when you can scare people into buying into your argument.

He shoots himself in the foot in the next line,

"The Democratic governor is pushing for tax increases to help make up a $940 million budget deficit by the end of June."
The semester if over by then, no one would receive an incomplete.

Misery, death, famine, pestilence... And LSU FOOTBALL IS CANCELLED.

Sound of 10,000 check books rustling.

Man, I thought we had it bad. I mean, we do, but not that bad. Looks like my little department is taking another $600,000 hit this year. That will make $1.5 million over the last 3 years. No good

When I was in college I had a friend who was a transfer from LSU. He lost his scholarship when they cut the schools competitive water skiing team. Not sure what they have left to cut to save the football program, cutting water skiing is a pretty major thing, at least to my friend. Could you imagine the uproar if SU cut its varsity division one water skiing program.

Louisiana football may not be imperiled but UCONN football could be. The same kind of budget message came out of Hartford a couple of days ago and football isn't the religion in the Nutmeg State that it is in Cajun Country.

You mean, like when SU cut swimming & diving? Or wrestling? Or...

Assuming you already have the facilities built, how much does it cost to field a football team? (Ignoring scholarships because I doubt that they have a huge impact, but they complicate the question like crazy)

Self inflicted...Who cares.

It will just save Syracuse a road trip and we can get another home game vs. Buffalo.

I must respectfully disagree. I was and am looking forward to another trip to Louisiana and a game in the other Death Valley. That, and it's as close to where I live as Syracuse will come for a while (barring another Texas Bowl appearance). Otherwise, I agree with your point.

I was being sarcastic more than anything else.

Interesting scare tactic.

Sounds like a guy who is trying to execute his Sarah Palin exit strategy.

Water skiing...I think you can major in that at Florida State?

He was just sworn in last month, so I don't think he's looking for the exit yet.

It's just his way of saying "Look at the mess I inherited from Jindal".

Sounds like he wants his tax increase really badly. Does he think he's holding the football program for ransom?

You would think that all of that SECN $, 7-8 sold out football games and a gazillion $ from boosters would be enough to float the entire athletic department.

They definitely could, but they would need enough money to float the entire university. If the school shuts down the players won't be academically eligible.
