interesting concept here as for the stipends.

Thats how some schools will get "their" money back, the ones that are dishing out 4 to 5 thou.

i like the concept, of accountability, but would streamline some of it.

When do the kids get their stipends, before or after the season? A dirty locker is a bigger fine than skipping class...LOL. We know the priorities here

I wouldn't do any of that. I'd make it a classroom thing/off-field thing. If you get suspended from the team because of your issue (grades, arrested, etc) you don't get the stipend until you're back.

Monthly checks.

Withholding stipend funds is the wrong way to go. Tell me what other student stipend program does stuff like this? There are a bunch of ways to hold students accountable that isn't linked to subjective fines (like, maybe playing time).

Personally, I think it would be better for universities to offer a personal financial management program for students who receive a stipend. In my mind, that would be far more beneficial. Boneheaded ideas by Beamer and Tuberville. They're trying to levy fines like In the NFL.

im not saying the concept is 100% right, but i wouldnt call it boneheaded either. i think its a fair perspective and may need some fine tuning/further deliberations about the merits.

I kind of feel the same way. It's an interesting idea b/c it clearly holds players accountable for things that are important -- classes, discipline, etc. What feels a little disingenuous about it is that it doesn't really tackle the whole issue of the massive amount of time these guys have to dedicate to sports. In other words, it's kind of saying "You need to get to class and do your work ... unless it conflicts with some scheduled time in the film room."

All in all, though, I kind of like that they seem to at least be encouraging these guys to care about something other than touchdowns on saturdays.

right. what also irks me a bit is the stipend, at least for the top players at va tech, really doesnt fully compensate them for the money they bring to the schools. so, they pay crap wages and then want to take money away if they dont act 100% according to the schools guidelines. it seems like thats a bit disingenuous. i wonder also for people familiar with labor laws if this is even more indication that the players are employees of the schools.

Cuse can't do this since they are already facing an uphill battle with stipends

Fines pretty much, as far as I can tell, and from my discussion with Chris Carlson, could very well be used as evidence of an employee-employer relationship between the player and the university. I've no idea if that would be good or bad.

I'm not really in the pay the players camp for a variety of reasons -- I mean you could not play football and pay your way through college and graduate with massive debt. That's what non-football and hoops players do and that certainly doesn't seem like a great deal either. I also don't know how you pay fairly -- in other words, how do you put a market value on players outside of just opening it up and having an auction for recruits every year (which I know some would essentially be fine with just having essentially paid players representing a university).

But, regardless, I agree that taking money out of a stipend that's not very big to begin with seems a bit petty in the grand scheme of things.

I guess it's sort of an odd issue.

I definitely think it's boneheaded. Want to hold the players accountable? There are plenty of ways to do that which doesn't include taking away their stipend funds. Do grad students have their stipends taken away during the academic year?

Stipends are complementary benefits. Universities are making a commitment to student-athletes by offering these additional benefits... presumably because the additional funds will offset some of the additional costs student-athletes incur. Players should be able rely on those funds and plan accordingly. Universities have every right to revoke the benefit (along with terminating a scholarship if violations occur) but I don't think it's right for them to establish a kangaroo court simply because they are supplying the funds. Administer the process with integrity and allow for student-athletes to develop personal financial management skills (rather than arbitrarily saying your locker is dirty, give back $50).

That being said, I'm not a fan of student-athletes being paid - but that's another discussion.

Sounds like a great way to run off a player you don't want by nickel and diming his stipend away.
