Iowa, Iowa St gambling investigation

Just another check box on the “college sports will never be the same again and is doomed” list
It won’t be the same, but it doesn’t mean it’s doomed. Things change and change some more.

If they were betting on games they were playing in or games in which they had insider knowledge, that’s obviously a big problem.

If we’re taking about them betting on other games that they weren’t connected to, this is just a dumb NCAA rule that nobody should really care about. Does the rule really not allow players to gamble on professional sports? Who the hell thought that made sense?

The expansion of legalized gambling made this inevitable. There will be more cases, a lot more.

Or has legalized gambling uncovered more than what we thought was happening for so long.

Lot more eyes and ears on it now that it’s legalized watching these “obscure bets” and throwing up red flags that they can easily investigate with the digital fingerprints

The rule is, if a sport is played at the NCAA level, college athletes, staff members and coaches—anyone within the athletic department—is prohibited from betting on that sport.

Very dumb rule

Not betting on your own sport is a fair rule. In what world is that a good idea? Especially with the portal these days?

Not betting on NBA basketball because you play college basketball is a good rule?

It’s just not on your sport. It’s any sport that is played at the ncaa level.

Honestly it still doesn't matter. It's a fair rule. The old ASU betting ring was for point shaving but this rule covers that base too as to not have SAs in a betting ring. It's an issue for many reasons beyond just how it impacts a game along. A good safety measure too. Want to bet? Learn how to invest for the future.

Many years of managing programs that directly and indirectly work with people on their finances and financial literacy- gambling is one of the absolute worst things for a young person to get into before they have established how to manage their money. It's far beyond the integrity of the sport and gets into long term considerations.

Did you attend Rutgers

I don’t get the reference. I’m guessing Rutgers had a gambling scandal at some point?

I just don’t know why a college water polo player can’t bet on the MLB.

Does the NCAA prohibit players from smoking cigarettes or (of age) drinking alcohol when they’re off campus and away from anything affiliated with the school/team?

I mean, if we’re so concerned with their well being, we should definitely be making sure they don’t do any legal things that could be harmful.

Statistically speaking, 90% of gamblers (not a number I pulled from a hat, a real data-driven number) gamble responsibly and don’t have their world come crashing down around them because of it.

Rules that ‘protect’ the 1/10 who happen to be idiots are good rules? Okay.
