Is there anyone on this board

Louisville had our number (and has, for years) and that was an emotional game for them - the last game ever at historic Freedom Hall. SU wasn't going to face them again in the NCAAT, however.

Your memory of the Georgetown game is flawed. SU had mounted a comeback against the Hoyas and the momentum was on our side. They kept it up briefly after Arinze went down at around the 5 minute mark - it was a 2 point game with 4 minutes to play, but without that inside presence the Orange just couldn't close it out.

I say this over and over again - the tournament is a crapshoot with a lot of luck involved, so I don't know if SU would have won a title that year. But I do know that they were without question the best team in the nation (Coach K and Bobby Knight both seconded that opinion in the days just before Arinze went down), and that Arinze would have made a huge difference vs. Butler.

I remember the Georgetown game differently. They took our best punch in the first half, but closed late to keep the score tight at halftime. It was nip tuck until the 10 minute mark when they took control. By the time Arinze went down they had already established momentum, and a lead, and were going to win that game. They were absolutely shredding the zone.

Agreed on the crapshoot of the tourney, that's why tournament record has always seemed like a harsh stat to solely judge a coach by. But I think the Butler game goes right down to the wire even with Arinze.

Actually it was a 4 point game and Scoop missed a layup with under a minute left. We still could have won this game.

Scoop Jardine missed Two Point Layup.

Georgetown was up just 5 points when Arinze went down, and it was a 2 point game a minute later. As March notes, it was still a 4 point game with a minute to play. Who knows what would have happened if our money scorer had been in the game, if only to keep the Hoya interior defense occupied.

I know it is almost a tradition on this board to declare a game "over" as soon as SU falls behind by 6 points, but that game was winnable down the stretch, even without AO.

This thread has more "you're a bad , unhappy, person if you do not think like xxx" commentary than any other single thread I can recall. Kudos.

Barf.

The season has been a joy. Many members of the team are really struggling. It could all easily end with a bang, or a butleresque helpless whimper.

Given what we have accomplished this season, anything less than a great 8 would be a disappointment. ..a Richmond spiders Vermont level displeasure. If that happens and I come here and find "but we were 33 - 4!!" and "wait til next year" , I will lose it.

Thank god our coach does not support this groupthink psycho babble.

Noticed your pic, is that a rottie mix or a lab in your pic?

I'm loving every minute of this season. It's one of the best teams in our lives with more wonder to come. JB is at his best and has a great group of players to work with. I don't care if they win big or win dirty. I'm all in.

Lab-chow. Great mix.
nice. I have a rottie yellow lab mix 10 month he looks similar to your dog. Huge dog and high energy, but he's the nicest dog I've ever owned.

The glass is half full. Every team has weaknesses, but it's been a fun and special season. This year they find a way to win rather than find a way to lose. I've wondered about several things this season (not playing certain players at times, going into stall ball with a slim lead, etc) but that doesn't mean I'm not still optimistic and loving the results. Some of the Debbie Downers ignore the positives and focus too much on the negatives. If all you do is complain, then that's what you are. I'm just glad that the OP started this thread to voice the other side.

I'd feel bad about an early exit in the tourney. The team (just like any team in the country) needs to play well and get some decent matchups in the NCAA's to win it all. I think many of us (myself included) form a lot of our identity from how the team does. An early exit is embarassing, while a strong showing makes us feel proud of our team and ourselves. Still, I've woken up 28 times this fall/winter feeling pretty happy due to an SU victory the day/night before. That's gotta be worth something!

Finally, I feel fairly confident in Scoop's leadership. The kid has really matured on and off the court since he got here. It's been a slow and steady progression, but his best basketball is coming. He's definitely showing the signs of being ready to carry the team deep in the tourney. Mostly that means making good decisions and keeping everyone on the same page. I think he has the personality to do that. I'm optimistic and excited to see what happens!

Great post, and thanks, I agree with your entire post. My sentiments exactly.

I vaguely remember looking at this game a while back.

AO left with 5 minutes left, we were down 7. (Technically it was 6, but he left after committing a foul, Monroe made 1 of 2, so I count that as 7.)
We did get it to 2 with 4 minutes left, as you mentioned. (Scoop hit 2 FT with 4:12 left, 74-72)

I can't go as far as you; I think they were one of the 2 or 3 best teams (I think it was UK, KU, and us) that year.

That Gtown game was so depressing. A buddy of ours came out from Nevada to go to the BET with me and some of my friends. #1 seed plays at noon on Thursday, so the kid shows up on Wednesday night I believe and we were out by 2 PM on Thursday. It was also a shitty weekend weather wise, I don't even remember what we did.

I just remember sitting in one of the bars across the street from the garden after the game beign so depressed; not so much cause we lost but because I thought AO was done.

<----------GLASS HALF FULL and PROUD OF IT!!!

Think the team has some weaknesses, but what team doesn't? I think their many strengths definitely outweigh their weaknesses!!

Mason - could not agree more about your point about having no J-Dub or Melo this year. We just don't have that elite inside/outside scorer who can put us on his shoulders this year.
Not saying your wrong but dissagree.
CJ is midrange specialist. Scoop drives and either gets a good layup or throws a nice pass/lob to Melo or one of our forwards. He also is great with late game threes. I felt he was good with them last year as well.
KJO is developing his midrange post up Trouble is staying out of foul trouble so we can let him use it more in the first half as well.

I don't think we are giving our go to guys enough credit. We don't need one guy to lead us with 24 come march. We have a team that many of the guys are capable of scoring 20 plus in. JB isn't going to run the sets to give one guy control over the game outside of maybe Scoop. And maybe KJO if he hitting his jumper at a outstanding rate. Its not going to happen.

I think we all want the same outcomes, namely NC #2. The issue in this thread however, is the seemingly determined focus by some to downplay every victory & emphasize every fault.
Its like looking at the SI swimsuit issue, & only focusing on the pimple on Kate Upton's butt!
Hello...what about the rest of the picture?
I have yet to see ANY team in CBB look 100% dominant in EVERY game. UK went to the wire vs Miss State just the other night, yet somehow their grind-it-out victories are a virtue, while ours are a curse?
Its not unexpected from any fanbase, but its helps to have some sanity & put this season in its proper perspective. Hopefully we'll finish out on top.

I'm late to the party but I'm on board! (sorry had to stop for beer) I'm actually more of a glass is overflowing guy than half full which I'm sure really rubs some folks the wrong way.

Lots of good things going for this season. We are 28-1 and potentially in line for a 30 win regular season!

My son is due to be born on March 6th (first day of BET) and with that I get up to 6 weeks of FMLA where I can take paid time off last second with no recourse. I expect to be watching the Orangemen play all the way until April 2nd and enjoying every moment of it with our new edition. He'll be coming home from the hospital wearing this

And he's already got this waiting for him at home
