We can play word games if you'd like, but I think you're confusing my claim that getting an education is a selfish act means that getting an education is wrong. We don't think about getting an education as selfish, but it is - it is done wholly in the interests of the individual. It consumes tremendous resources for the individual, to such an extent that nowadays most people have to harm the financial welfare of their future selves in order to afford education now. We excuse it because it's common practice to how the world works and the selfish act of a person taking themselves out of society for a time in order to learn doesn't generally harm others. It's just a socially accepted kind of selfishness because net, it becomes a positive thing at a later time for critical masses of people to have an education.
I submit it isn't a ridiculous claim at all. For the reasons I listed above, I humbly submit that education is inherently selfish. And related to the current paradigm, fans and their own inherent selfishness (which is far, far less purposeful than the selfishness inherent to education) are having a really hard time accepting that many student-athletes are pursuing what may be the highest earning years of their lifetime while getting their education. The rule that those years come well after college has been turned on its head and a lot of fans struggle to navigate the emotional journey of that reality.
