Homero Blancas shot a 55 while in college (Univ of Houston) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homero_Blancas. I played the course and it was not that easy!
I caddied in a group at Twin Ponds in NY Mills (outside of Utica) when Ed "Windy" Wiatr, a local fringe pro shot a 57 - 25-34. Course was par 70 back then 34-36=70. He was 9 under on the front nine, which included holing out a 100 yard wedge shot for an eagle on the 4th hols. I think the year was 1959 or 1960. It was in the fall and they were playing in an 8some or 9some skins game. (I din't caddie for Windy as he carried his own bag.)

It's such a shame that his feat is overshadowed by yet another blatant attempt to cheat by Eldrick.
