It's Official: It’s GMac

I know nothing and my opinion is as worthless as everyone else's (not named Brian Blair). That being said, once Gerry became a viable candidate, I think it was always going to be extremely difficult not to hire him.

I suspect he crossed the viability threshold when Sienna won the MAAC tourney. Once people could point to him taking a 4-win team to a conference title in 2 seasons, there was going to be a ton of momentum behind his candidacy from SU donors.

In my mind, the only thing that could have derailed that was luring an established, winning, current P5 coach to SU. And honestly, SU would never spend the money to hire a candidate with those qualifications. Schertz was on the fringe of that but not P5 obviously.

I have concerns about Gerry as HC, but I love the renewed energy that he'll bring to the program and us fans. I hope that all the donors who promised to open their wallets for him follow through.

We need about $8 million in NIL to pair with the $4 million in direct compensation from SU. Hitting that number is the most important thing necessary to turning things around starting this coming season. Blair's statement made that crystal clear.

It's been a miserable past couple years for SU hoops. Let's go Gerry, crush the offseason.
I'm with you 100% here. The line that we shouldn't forget is that SU would never spend the money to hire a candidate with those qualifications. I hope Gerry impressed the AD's with his plans for the offense. Being gritty and playing hard means nothing if we don't have a plan.

Hopefully this works out as well for SU as it did for Duke. Duke offered Tommy Amaker the head coach position, and Coach K interfered and talked Amaker into passing because he wanted Scheyer. Then Duke hired Scheyer. Sounds familiar, except this is our second bite at replacing the legend.

The worst thing about this hire is finding out how few people are capable of spelling "Siena".

JHC, people.
Have had to constantly correct Voice To Text "double n" misspellings in texts regarding GMac's accomplishments at SieNa.

I know that many say that Gerry wouldn’t have gotten the job had he not played at SU but I’m going to push back on that a bit.

I freely admit that he likely would not have been initially considered nor interviewed if not for his history with SU. I have heard Gerry speak and I think that it is quite possible, in fact likely, that he blew the doors off during his interview. He knows the good, bad, and ugly at SU and he may well have come in with a vision and a gameplan to achieve that vision. And it may also have been impressive enough to separate the metaphorical financial panties from the donors.

I hired a lot of managers in my career. Often, the candidates would simply point to their resumes and track records. That is fine, but the ones who always impressed me were the ones who also did their homework on the position and came in with a vision and plan for success. It would not surprise me that Gerry did the same.

Let’s not forget that Fran Brown was basically a journeyman position coach with a reputation for being a great recruiter. There were likely any number of candidates with more experience as a head coach or coordinator. And yet Fran blew AW away during his interview and convinced him that he was the man.

I would not be surprised if Gerry did the same thing.

As the kids would say, Gerry has aura.

It's the GMAC era, let's get going.

I heard that Duke strategically planned for the hand off from K to Scheyer for three years. They made sure that the next coach (I’m sure they knew K wanted Scheyer) had all the resources in place to succeed from day one. Additional staff, etc. Duke did everything right to ensure the product didn’t drop off. Of course, they are Duke and were on top when K left. SU was a totally different story. JB didn’t really focus on the transition, and the school seemed to do nothing to prepare for it. And worse, we were not in a very good place when the baton was forcibly passed.

Hopefully, this is our chance to right the wrongs of three years ago. Get Gerry the resources he’s needs and let er rip!

i hope people realize todays giving doesn't help gmac. it's not NIL. it's to help offset some of the $20.5m revenue share su has committed to spend.

i thinks its sad that we no longer have a collective for basketball nil. hopefully it gets corrected soon.

I don't see a quote from JW about this hire. Is he purposely staying in the background to let BB be front and center?
As a coincidence, I ran into Wildhack yesterday. After letting him know I was a Siena season ticket holder, we talked about how much Gerry has evolved in the past two years.

I did something I’ve never done. I donated to the coach fund. When gmac asked I listen. Least I can do for a guy who provided me with so much enjoyment and pride.

I have no idea how this will work out. But it feels a lot better than last 3 years already

3rd party NIL is essentially all private for Syracuse right now (correct me if I'm wrong on those more educated), so even if this money isn't directly added to raise the NIL+Rev Share pot. It's indirectly still helping the coaches tremendously to say that we have rev share covered and spend time sourcing more private third party NIL opportunities and funding until they figure out how they can have their own public way of donors giving directly to an NIL collective again.

Dear Friends:
When I first came to Syracuse as an 18-year-old kid from Scranton, Pennsylvania, I had no idea what this place would mean to me. I just knew I wanted to compete, I wanted to win and I wanted to make people proud. Our University gave me everything. A championship. A degree. A career. A family. And when my playing days were over, it gave me the opportunity to help develop the next generation of Orange student-athletes grow into young men I’m genuinely proud of.

I spent the last two years at Siena University and I’m grateful for every minute of my time there. But know this: I have always been Orange.

And now I’m back. And I am ready to work.

Here’s what I need you to know: this program has everything it takes to compete at the highest level. The talent. The history. The fan base. The Dome. But competing at the top takes resources and urgency. The transfer portal opens in two weeks. Recruiting never stops. The work to build a roster that can win championships begins today.
That’s why I’m asking you, personally, to make a gift to Syracuse Men’s Basketball on Giving Day today, Tuesday, March 24.
I know what it means when this community shows up. I felt it as a player every time we ran out of that tunnel. I felt it on the road when I’d hear “Let’s Go Orange” in an opposing arena. I need recruits and their families to feel it too. I need them to see and experience how this fan base is unlike anything else in college basketball.
Whether you give $3 for the number I wore, $44 for the number so many greats wore, $2,003 for the year we won the national championship, or whatever you can—it matters. Every single gift is a statement that Orange Nation is behind this program.
I didn’t come back to be comfortable. I came back to win. Help me do that.

I’ll see you in the Dome.

the past "family hires" didnt fail bc they were family hires

they failed because they werent competent

i believe gmac is competent

is he competing for national titles good? idk...but few are

i 100% beleive he will have cuse in the ncaat at the bare minimum...which, given the last 10 years, is all we can really ask for

i dont know how anyone can truly be certain of who will be title caliber...its a crapshoot...all you can ask for is competitiveness and being in the conversation...i believe gmac provides that.

i get the distrust of anyone associated with JB...he tarnished his legacy the last few years and then autry hurt it way more...but i think that gmac doing what he did with siena...proves he has what it takes.. he did better than red did with way less resources.

think about it: gmac outperformed red despite being at a 16 seed level school and having way less NIL...now with SU behind him, I truly beleive gmac will kill it in orange...the guy is a WINNER. PERIOD.
So why don't we talk about Melo being a winning player with such reverence?
