I've heard this being referred to as a "throw-away" season. Well, its not. This is Marrone's 4th season in house. He has a Sr QB, an experienced receiving corps and a defense that is more than adequate.

The schedule will never get easier than it is right now. The Big Least has NEVER been as weak as it is right now. There isn't one school that we should lose to in conference. Don't give me that OOC bullstuff either. Outside of USC and possibly Missouri, give me one team we genuinely can't beat. The two sub-par B1G schools? Really?

Forget a 6-6 season. This season will be a bust if we don't go minimum 8-4

This is not a Grob era team. This is certainly not a throwaway season and whoever said that doesn't have a clue.

The overall point of your post is dead on though. Its year 4, the depth is finally there, we have a mix of young talent and vets. I've been patient (where many here have not been) and its time to start really turning the corner. To this point, I think HCDM has done a good job considering the shape of the program when he arrived. He's done a nice job building depth and I think its good depth (not just warm bodies). That will certainly begin to play itself out this year though. There is no excuse for another bombed out November considering that we are playing with 80 scholarship players.

7 wins is the expectation for me. This team needs to be in the top half of the big east and win 3 OOC games. I think we have the right coach and feel that we will get there this year.

If we do not, I may have to join the dark side and question whether or not he's the right guy. For the record, I don't expect that to happen.

Exactly. Not a throw-away at all. I really think last year was the transition year from the previous team to HCDM's team.

6-6 or better nice 3 year extension. 5-7? 4-8 or worse time for Doc to get out the rolodex

Marrone is not a good coach. he is going to be so incredibly overwhelmed in the ACC that I think its a mercy killing to get rid of him after this season.

We are playing in the worst conference that matters, which is now much weaker with WV gone. For Marrone to "legitimately" keep his job he needs to (i) go 6-6, (ii) finish in the top three of the BE, and (iii) make a bowl game. I recognize that (iii) is a given if (i) and (ii).

At 5-7 he is fired. at 4-8 he is fired and should be sued by SU for stealing its money. at 3-9 he is fired, sued, and literally should be tarred and feathered by the fans.

Lots of good coaches out there. No reason for SU to be this bad.

I'm looking for a good, if not great season. Why is any game on the schedule a foregone conclusion? We have a full roster, good backups at most if not all positions, size, and speed. This is the last year in the BE and could be great motivation. I know it's cloudy a lot in upstate New York, but the clouds come from the lakes, not football.

Some programs help themselves with scheduling. This program never has. Sure there's a lot of winnable games. But I'm having trouble finding more than five wins.

"There isn't one school we shouldn't lost to in the [BE] conference."

This is a great example of setting expectations way too high thereby allowing for intense complaints at the end of the season that the expectations were not met.

This seems to be a common occurrence with the SU Football team.

The fact is that we could very easily lose to Pitt, Rutgers, Cincy, Louisville, USF and UConn. I strongly suspect that the Orange will be underdogs in all but perhaps one of those games.

This is not a make or break season for Marrone. This is 1984 in the Coach Mac era - still a few years away, but progress in talent and infrastructure well underway.

Marrone has shown that he can guide a team to a winning season. He's proven in that regard.

He hasn't yet proven that he can have a solid offense at the college level. At this point I actually care more about seeing progress on offense than wins.

Not a throw away at all. I expect and predicted a 7-5 record. But, if you really look at it, other than USC (L) and SB (W), the other 10 games really could go either way. You have to go 5-5 in toss ups. So that is 6-6. Bare minimum. Let's start Saturday on the positive side of the ledger.

I agree that we could very easily lose all of those games. But we could also win all of those games. And I wouldn't be surprised (with the lone exception of maybe Louisville) if we do win those games.

We have the talent to win 7-8 games. There is no question in my mind. And the original post is right. This is not a throw-away year in the least.

Productive offense will lead to more wins. That's the bottom line. We know what Shafer is capable of, given the right amount of talent. And he has an ample amount of talent now (IMO).

May be one year away from peak performance, but this year there is certainly enough in the tank to make a leap into the top 35-40 defenses in the country.

Good point -- this year Doug's team should improve into November as we can rotate DTs, DEs, RBs and CBs. We aren't depending on many frosh or RF, but some of these can develop and emerge.
We need Pugh back by the end of September as the OL depth isn't all that good.
Excited to see on Saturday whether the pass rush is improved & whether guys like Stevens, Gulley & Broyld can be playmakers to supplement the starters.
Great time of year -- every team in the country expects to win its first game and be 8-4.

So why don't we just set expectations at 2-10 every year. That way when we hit a 3 or 4 win season, we can celebrate with a juice-box, orange slices and a participation trophy. And as an extra special award, we get popsicles if we get to 5 wins.

Bullshit. Its time to expect more. This isn't 1984 and it shouldn't take 7 years to turn this around.

Fixed.

Yet we went 8-5 with a stronger BE in 2010 than this year.

Absolutely correct. The top team in our conference is about the 30th best team in the country. After that, there really isn't much of a separation talent wise. The best coached teams will be in the top half. Therefore, I expect a top half finish. The OOC schedule is way overblown from a difficulty perspective and I see no reason we shouldn't win 3 of those.

A well-coached team is going to win 6 or 7 games with this squad. I've been as patient as anybody (clearly with the exception of OPA who would give Marrone 15 years to win 9 games) and I expect we will be rewarded for the patience this year with a 2010 type season.

Last time I checked, Louisville was a Top 25 team, and both Cinci and USF were Top 40.

Every BE team won't be a pushover.

Thets go get em!!!

Preseason polls can be tossed in the garbage. The reality is that there is no more even conference, top to bottom in the land. No gimme Ws, no automatic Ls. IF we have a good head football coach, you're going to find out this year. I suspect we do.

JUST WIN BABY!!

No more excuses. No excuses will work anymore

Man, I really wish I shared some of your optimism.

Or your narcotics, whatever is fueling this.

We were a lousy team last year, and 1-6 in the worst major conference in the game. I want to believe, but I'm expecting 4 wins.
