James Vollono (ST coordinator)

I don't think wanting SU to aim higher than a re-tread fresh off of a firing just because he's probably buddies with Fran is "ruining" anything.

Huh? Pretty sure you got the wrong guy.

We'll never know for sure, but I humbly submit we would have had a better season had those 22 punt returns been 22 more receptions with someone else returning those punts.

He's one of the greatest WRs of all-time. Why is it better to use him as punt returned instead of just throwing the ball to him more?

That’s sort of a different argument but even so, if he caught 85 passes I’d still have had him returning punts.

It was EROB’s first year as DC, he’s going to get every opportunity to right the ship. There is absolutely no way Fran will have a quick hook here.
Exactly and that's not the intention of my post. Just poking fun at kirbivore because he recently suggested that Fran should consider that outcome.

Please expand on the brilliance of rushing 3 guys and guarding the future NFL receiver one v one on the game deciding 4th down play.
That was a huge mistake for a 1st time/year DC. Obviously not a reason to fire a coach.

Agree and just in general, I'd prefer a guy who was still wanted at his current job.
There have to be up and comers that have coached stand out special teams units at FCS schools who want to take the next step. Watch some film of FCS schools that have executed great on specials and get on the phone.

I prefer situational punt returners and depending on circumstance I'd put Pena back there once in a while as long as SU had a player that could do the job as the main PR.

First and foremost, you need good blocking for Pena to be out there. I didn't see that in 24 so it was a bit worrisome.

Luckily and through his past experience Pena was pretty smart on his returns in 24 via fair catch and when to take off.

Losing Allen another guy is needed no matter what so hopefully this will all be a moot point and we'll see a guy back there in 25 that'll do as good or better job than Pena. Frans been getting more speed so let's see how this plays out.

True he didmake amajor mistake there andi cricified him for it also but tell me u havent made mistakes at your job. I know i have which mademe better. Erob doesnt have the flashy guys our offense does. He wants an attack dog but he was given a poodle to do it so he did best he could. Now ifhe does get a attack dog and we still actlike a poodle then i agree with ya lol.

The play call was at best debatable, but 'cuse vs. Stanford never should've come down to a 4th and 9 or whatever it was. If anything Nixon carries more blame for that loss than ERob, as the Stanford rush caught us embarrassingly off guard, and it'd be ludicrous to want to fire Nixon over it.

Quick facts

Born: Sep 26, 1967 (57 years), Cherry Hill Township, NJ
College: Bucknell University
Parents: Ed Foley Sr.
Team coached: Temple Owls football (Head coach, 2018–2018)
This would suggest that he played WITH Schiano in college at Bucknell.

This discussion brings to mind an article about the VaTech special teams back when Frank Beamer was head coach, and the Hokie ST play was legendary. Beamer stated that one way he placed an emphasis was to practice ST at the beginning of practice (when the players were fresh and attentive), instead of trying to squeeze it in at the end of practice. He also created a culture where there was a spirited competition for being a member of a special team unit, which included many starters and the best athletes on the team.

With average points against per game of 30.3. I know Fran isn't going to fire ERob this offseason but I'm thoroughly not impressed so far.
That’s a better argument than pinning it on one game. We don’t say fire Nixon because of the Pitt game.
