JB on BB

We dont get him open looks? Huh? `now we are blaming the other players? any elite shooter in college should be over 50% on wide open 3s. JB just says anything at any moment he is old and does not care about the collateral damage.
When did JB say that?

We haven't gotten ANYBODY open looks in ages now.

Side effect of not having a true PG on the roster since Ennis.
(nothing against Silent G - he did an amazing job for us)

I'd imagine Kadary could get Jackson plenty of open looks, if given the chance.

Also - if your best shooter isn't getting clean looks now and again, maybe that's a coaching and scheme issue? Just a thought. ;)

Buddy doesn’t run. He just jogs up and down the court. His cuts aren’t quick and he’s very poor at setting up his defender. He doesn‘t do anything quick. He also does next to nothing about trying to draw fouls. He avoids all contact. He needs to rip the ball through defenders arms if they are guarding him that close. Theres no reason not to hug him on defense.

What he said is opponents are face guarding him and as a result he doesn't get many open looks. JB deserves blame for some things but this is 100% correct.

Agree we typically have 2s that can create like Triche, Battle, its always been a ISO offense.

Agreed. It doesn’t make sense to me that we make little adjustments year to year based on personnel. Rautins and Cooney were susceptible to being face guarded as well.

Here is the exact quote. He uses the “WE” cant get him open looks.

“Everybody has face-guarded him and it’s been really hard for him to get shots,’' Jim Boeheim said. “He’s shooting 50 percent on open threes. The problem is we can’t get him any open threes.
“If we can get him some open looks, we know he’s a good shooter.’'

If JB cured cancer you would be on here complaining that he apparently is fine with diabetes. He has said exactly these same things about other shooters in the past and he isn't wrong. It is his offensive scheme that fails to get the open looks, not that the players are doing a terrible job. He never said the players were at fault and he is correct that lack of open looks and poor shot selection have been huge impediment to BB and all our shooters over the past 4 or 5 years.

Man, you guys just really don’t like the Boeheim family eh?

the kid goes out and scores 29 and wins us a must win game against ND and he still gets scrutiny.

JB switched to the press instead of zone to get in this game and took out JGIII and had great in game adjustments to bring us back from down by 20 to win the game. Still gets scrutiny.

sounds like someone is a little jealous if you ask me.

Explain what scheme gets an open look for a shooter, since everyone thinks scheme is all it takes? if a team wants to face guard someone and that someone has a limited skill set, scheme is not gonna fix it to create shots.. Same thing happens in LAX.. if you want to shut someone down with a face guard others have to step up or that person has to have the kill set to beat it.

We get tons of open looks.. we dont tend to make them. we also force shots at times, we miss bunnies too. lots of bad things in our offense and yet somehow we still are one of the top teams in the league in scoring.. Scheme must be doing something right.

We could really use a slasher on this team that is good at drawing defenders and then kicking it out to shooters on the perimeter. Hughes was the guy who did it well last year. JGIII, Kadary and Alan do a lot of things nicely but none are currently good at slashing and kicking it out.

The closest we have now is Marek, but he is more of a plodder than a slasher. But he finds Buddy some kicking it out.

I just can't believe Boeheim fails to realize (or care) that he looks so foolish when talking about his son. In Boeheim's mind, Buddy is the one of the best shooters in NCAA history and the only reason that his stats don't back that up is because of things around him rather than the basket going through the hoop more.

Yes, the team doesn’t get him enough open looks. And while execution is an issue, the main problem is that the head coach won’t design better more effective offensive sets. You have one of the best passers in college basketball in Marek and an experienced team and we still only run like 5 plays.

We’re around 38 in offensive efficiency, per KenPom. Sorry we should be top 20 in offense. We have the pieces to run good offense. It’s on defense where we have athletic and size limitations.

If we had a center that could actually do something in the low post that might help. If we had a PF who could make post moves too.. If we could get out and run that would help as well.. Our steals at the foul line used to lead to easy baskets now they dont even lead to shots..

go thru the teams ahead of us. they have true centers, play a faster paced game, or have multiple athletes that lead to more run outs and easy baskets.. Using the KenPo, AdjO we are 32. the difference between 17 and 32 is 114.8 to our 113.0 barely a difference.

Cooney and Rautins worked to create their own open looks. Just saying.

This isn’t true. They got locked down too, and if anything Buddy is better than both of them scoring on 2’s.

A player is responsible for cutting hard off of screens, creating space, making contested shots.
I'm flashing back to how hard the asthmatic Trevor Cooney worked to get open. He ran around, through, past screens, through the lane, looped around the key... or am i just making that up? False memory?

I don't see Buddy doing much of that.

If Buddy isn't getting enough open looks:
• He needs to work harder for them
• He needs to work smarter for them
• He needs a true point guard who threatens a defense with penetration and passing
• He needs offensive plays to exploit his talents and minimize his deficiencies.

Seems to me that the head coach should have a heavy hand on every one of those potential solutions.
