JB on BB

Cooney ran the perimeter relentlessly. Rautins always moved without the ball too.

If they weren’t open, it was not from lack of effort on their own end.

And I am saying they still got locked down. I remember it. I was at the games. I don't blame them for getting locked down. I blame the offense.

If we had a center that could actually do something in the low post that might help. If we had a PF who could make post moves too.. If we could get out and run that would help as well..
We rotate 2 SF, 3 SG and 1 PG. And we are slow footed and dare say play only one player "with hops" (AG). I dare say recruiting is the biggest issue. Good news is we have another SF coming in next year.

you could argue we have more scoring than athletic talent.. Maybe JB is coaching better than people think, cause I dont know how many coaches would find a way to score 80 a game with this team.

Once they are here you can only do with what you have.. there is no waiver wire..

and I remember many people here mocking cooney for running around like that and laughing about it and how stupid it was.

Its almost like people think you just magically get open when teams are playing man. Look at Garza for Iowa, he works his but off all game to score and as much as he shoots he isnt getting the ball every time down court. its a lot of work and he only has to move 5 ft either way most of the time unless he floats out to the 3 and the center doesnt chase him. If teams want to face guard the 2, most of the time they are not the guy who can break someone down, they need help once they get the ball. Unless of course you run lots of off ball screens, but again thats not an offense according to the board experts. Being the slowest guy on the court is not easy.

If we had Buddy the season for Cooney you are talking about 2014 we could have cut down the nets.

That team needed a shooter like Buddy. It had the defense and PG around him. It needed offense from the SG position.

Yup. When you have the center setting picks for the point guard, instead of using the center to, I don't know just spit-balling here, pick the guy who is face guarding your 2G to free him up then it's not the 2 guard's fault he can't get open.

Cooney and Rautins worked to create their own open looks. Just saying.
Cooney just ran in circles around the court for the whole possession. I don't remember anyone ever setting screens for him.

If this team had a Rick Jackson who we could throw the ball to 10-15 times a game to space the floor and he scored down low it would open up room for our shooters to get shots.
However we care about the bigs being able to defend the corner 3.

He was supposed to be running off of screens. That's what you were supposed to be seeing. Sometimes our big guys forgot to actually pick Cooney's defender.

Yeah, and you can use ANY other teammate as a screener, to rub your defender off onto.
Doesn't have to be a Big.

As Pros, guys like Reggie Miller and Ray Allen elevated this to an art form.
they could run their defenders ragged over and thru screens all day long.

The flip side to this, is if Cooney doesn't bring his defender close enough to the defender for the pick to work, then guys like BMK might try to readjust their base and end up getting called for a moving screen. Takes two to set a proper screen. And then you need to figure out what to do once the defender recognizes the play and works to avoid the screen altogether.

you should never get a moving screen foul.. You are setting the pick, if the guy doesnt come to you dont go chase him.. let it go and start over.

Didnt seem to bother ND the other day though who set about 20 illegal screens.

This isn’t true. They got locked down too, and if anything Buddy is better than both of them scoring on 2’s.
To me... Andy was more athletic, had a better handle and played lower which allowed him to get in the paint more, that and pts off the break from steals ( He was a lot more active on Defense) that's what got him more 2 pointers. His scoring was not as dependent on the 3 as Buddy nor Cooney IMO. .

Cooney was more limited with his dribble and to me, spent too much time over his career hunting the 3 ball. That being said, he had really good hands and feet which allowed him to get steals and get out on the break to score. I think his " 2 point " game wasn't bad, but he left something on the table as far as growth to me. Cooney's shoot was not as nice as Buddy or Andy's, but he got more 2 point opportunities from his defense than Buddy (not so sure about Andy).

I think they were both better off the dribble than Buddy and scored more 2 pointers because of steals overall (could be wrong).

Buddy has the best looking shot of the 3 and the most potential to go for 20+ if his shot is falling.

They could all be locked down though!

I'm flashing back to how hard the asthmatic Trevor Cooney worked to get open. He ran around, through, past screens, through the lane, looped around the key... or am i just making that up? False memory?

I don't see Buddy doing much of that.

If Buddy isn't getting enough open looks:
• He needs to work harder for them
• He needs to work smarter for them
• He needs a true point guard who threatens a defense with penetration and passing
• He needs offensive plays to exploit his talents and minimize his deficiencies.

Seems to me that the head coach should have a heavy hand on every one of those potential solutions.
You're not making it up! He was the cardiac kid!!

Our off the ball screening is pretty much nonexistent. Though part of that might be the lack of imposing bodies that could even physically set a good screen.

You're actually VERY wrong.

Andy hit a TOTAL of 78 2's in his ENTIRE CAREER. 78/154

Buddy has hit 144 2's in just his first 2 full seasons. 144/395
CRAP!! That was his 3's.
He's 105/228 from 2 for his first 2 seasons.

(you have to subtract the 3 pt shots hit and taken from the TOTAL shots hit and taken to get these #'s)

Thanks for the numbers, I'm going off the memories vice stats (what getting old does to you).

The percentages are the issue. Is 36% on 790 shots (added 2 years to Buddy numbers) better than 50% on 154 shots? To me, answer is what's best for the team?

It's not really an apple to apple comparison without taking into consideration several other stats to be honest.

Cool Stats, what are the numbers for Cooney? Curious?

IMPORTANT NOTE!!! I FFF'd up and that was his 3 pt shots made/taken, NOT his 2's.

2's are actually 105/228. D'OH!!! 46%.

Also - Andy's stats are skewed by his very excellent RS-Senior season.
When he was part of an all-time great team, with 6 other stud teammates to draw attention from opposing defenses.
(yes, I know that only 4 of those 6 would be on the court with him at a given time)

Buddy is still only a Junior, and those stats I shared are solely from his first 2 seasons.
And he's been on 3 straight meh-ish teams.

Here's his career to date:

He's lifetime a 45% 2pt shooter. (was 46% thru first 2 years)
(and currently at ~36% from 3 in total)

Buddy at 87.5% this year from the line, by far his best.

Over Rautins? I'll take Buddy over Cooney but not Rautins. Plus, Andy was a solid defender.

And again - Buddy already has more made 2's thru 2 years, than Andy did for HIS ENTIRE CAREER.

So, you're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.
