JB on McC

So from what I am reading on here, CM is not making an effort to improve because he is sure he is a lottery pick next year, so he can do what ever he wants because he is one and done. JB is fed up with this lack of effort and is calling CM out over and over in the press conferences about his poor effort and poor performance. Some may think it is in act directed towards some ESPN guys who do the mock drafts, and behind closed doors CM knows what is really going on.
The easy answer is...if CM is really not doing the work to get better because he thinks he knows better than JB, and thus he is not performing well in our games..then sit him on the bench...Period. Then he has No stage to go to the NBA because none of the scouts will be able to see his potential. They will wonder if he is too much of a "project". This way it will force CM to either play the game the right way as a member of a "team" and as a player who wishes to follow the program laid out by his coach. It is not as if we lose out by his lack of play time. Roberson will do just fine in his place. Maybe CM can come in if Roberson gets into foul trouble.

I posted this in another thread - but I just don't see the lack of effort. He's a Frosh making some first year mistakes, but the kid appears to be trying to refine his game a bit when he's on the court. He seems to be attempting to integrate Rak's up and under into his repertoire and go to the rim when he sees an advantage. The kid went from having some trouble finishing plays, to having zero aptitude of late finishing pretty much anything.

Still, a kid with that talent, skillset, isn't going to go 1-7 (or whatever it was) from the floor with those looks most nights. He'll keep improving and figure it out.

I don't know why JB is going on the attack so often with him, it seems a bit like how he dealt with Rak early in his career (a tad more harsh probably) and it didn't seem to do wonders for Rak, so doubt it does much for McC either. Who knows though, we don't see what happens in practice. Either way, it's kind of akin to a teacher calling you up to the front of the entire class to tell you you got an on your paper. What's the point? It's kind of d**k move IMO.

Cover the start of the NBA season. Or go out and start scouting NBA draft prospects. Least wait till March, hell start of conference play.

Put out and NBA mock draft in November (Syracuse I believe, had only played 3 or 4 games)

Do you think Ford just does this on a whim, and posts it whenever he feels like it?? He has people above him at ESPN.com telling him what to do and when, because it generates clicks and increases revenue.

It's called having a job

I know more about basketball than you, I've played more basketball than you, I've watched more basketball than you. Anytime you want to play let me know and maybe you'll shut up with your pathetic responses.

I don't like the comments. Rip the player in the locker room but not to the media. The coaches job, in college athletics, should be to shield some of the blame and criticism of the public/media from the players to himself. I just don't see how JB blasting McC to the entire media is beneficial to his progress in any way. If I'm a top recruit I take note of how he is treating his best recruit, from the previous year, in the media and I take a step back and re-evaluate if that's something I'd be willing to go through. Boeheim is actively working against having McC being drafted next year. Whether he should or shouldn't go to the draft is irrelevant. The NBA is this kid's lifelong dream and the coach he is playing for is telling the entire world he isn't deserving of his shot in the league yet and should only be taken seriously as a draft candidate until JB tells the media so. Why would a big time recruit willingly subject himself to that possibility when he could go elsewhere and have a coach who will work to assist him in that dream. I think JB's comment comes off horribly.

Boeheim's not wrong, but that doesn't mean he isn't being an a-hole.

The last 14 games chris didnt take the ball at his defender nearly ever, he did like 6-7 times today and scored on one of them. Just glad to see him attack off the dribble in the halfcourt, for the first time ever at this level.
Re-watched the last couple of minutes and CMac's close-out on the final 3-pointer, where he went from near the baseline to get a hand in the shooter's face was impressive. The guy is Fast for a 6-10 forward. Hope he can get his mojo back soon!

Let's see, instead of endless arguments about whether Chris should be getting the playing he is, or countless threads about how he doesn't go up strong enough, we get endless threads talking about what a mean old man JB is.

How many fewer thread about Cooney would we have had over the last two years if JB had just criticized him in the media?

I imagine Chris realizes that he wouldn't be getting the minutes he is if JB didn't believe in him.

As many have said already, this kind of talk is something you save for the locker room IF you think its going to help the player/team. What good does saying this in a public presser do? Why not just say to the press that right now Chris is struggling, thats really all that needs to be said. How does ripping the kid in public help? JB has said before that what he says in the presser has already been said to the kid, thats fine but keep it there. This grandstanding only serves one person and thats JB, and it certaintly does not "help" the player/team.

This is exactly right, and dovetails nicely with an article in the Wall St. Journal today about how the Oregon football coaches communicate and coach their players without yelling.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/oregon-...-team-1420663969?mod=WSJ_hpp_MIDDLE_Video_Top

"In a move that may send football traditionalists into a sideline meltdown, Oregon coach Mark Helfrich and his staff have ditched the age-old technique of screaming at players to motivate them. Instead, Oregon’s coaches have implemented a softer, less confrontational and altogether cuddlier method of running their team."

"Oregon’s nonaggression policy isn’t limited to players. Offensive coordinator Scott Frost says that the spirit of civility extends to the coaching staff, where the lowliest graduate assistants are treated with the same deference as top members of the staff. “Guys in our program don’t get yelled at and treated like they are beneath the coaches,” Frost said. “There’s more enjoyment and laughing in our building than almost any football building in the country.”

"Instead of a chain of command with the head coach at the top, Oregon’s coaches, players and administrators are viewed as equals and collaborators. “Every single member of this team is seen as a leader in their own way,” said center Hroniss Grasu."

Go read the full article. It raises interesting questions on how the current younger generation communicates, and how best coaches can reach them. Oregon football is certainly doing something right.
Thank you! Wow, talk about a consciousness revolution! I wasn't going to watch the championship game on Monday, but now I will. I wonder if the announcers will let their audience know about this coaching innovation. It would be great if they could focus on it deliberately throughout the game. Of course, if the Ducks (quack!) lose, the laid back style could be singled out for blame. Anyway, it's an interesting angle that the media could play up or ignore (since it doesn't fit what manly football fans want to hear).

I am sending this article to friends.

I've mentioned this before, but I think JB's playing a dangerous game here. Really gotta question if this public stuff really serves McCullough or JB.

I don't get the ire over McCullough wanting to be a one and done player. So what?

Yeah - the one foot out the door applies to probably hundreds of players each year. The kid isn't playing "me" basketball that's for sure - so, what, he's just slacking because he figures it'll boost his draft stock? He think he's already done so well that he can sit back and avoid injuries? I don't see it.

Boeheim: We can't get Chris McCullough to play bad. It'd be a step up from where he is

This has gotten embarrassing for Jim at this point. I dont care if he is playing poorly, this is an 18 year old kid who a grown man publically bashes twice a week. Call it what u will, i call it being a bully and a coward. What adult trashes teenagers? Unreal.

For what its worth, he was just as good if not better than Roberson last night. Not saying much, but i didnt see him rip in to Tyler.

He did rip Tyler. Said "He had 17 rebounds the last game, and tonight was nowhere. Then dribbled the ball of his leg when Rak was open in the post".

I don't think JB is blasting CMac over his desire to go pro.

I think JB already knows that CMac is gone, and he's pushing the kid to use the next 3 months to get better prepared.

CMac should spend the next 3 months in the weight room, and not playing video games.

But since CMac is already convinced that he's a guaranteed lottery pick, he's not listening to JB's advice.

JB is Yoda, and CMac is a young Skywalker who thinks he's already a Jedi master. But he's nowhere near ready to take on the Dark Side (the NBA)

Please. His performance went down when he began playing against decent competition; right now it is readily (and painfully) apparent he doesn't match up physically.

this could not be more inaccurate.

trashing one and dones is not a good way to get Bryant, thats for sure. He is another one and done. If Jim doesnt want them, go recruit guys like Obokoh exclusively.

JB is JB. He do how he do. He trashed the entire team last night besides Roc. Why do we only care when he complains about McCullough?

Bryant is far from a "sure" one and done.

At best, he's a two year guy. Needs refinement--he isn't a trancendent athlete like some of the guys who immediately go pro. And his mother has explicitly stated that she potentially views him as a multi-year collegiate player.

oh yeah, thats completely comaprable to what he has said about Chris. :bat:

Unless McCollough is uncoachable or is a jerk these comments are unnecessary. McCollough appears to play hard but is soft. When TC was struggling JB spared his feelings when he talked to media last year and early this year. It isn't the same for McC. JB called him our best freshman since Melo the fanbase didn't make JB say that.

These comments are not helping McC so he should stop saying them publicly.
