Jerami Grant: Trailblazers

Wonder is he has any remorse over leaving Denver? He's made a ton of money but I think he turned down a Denver extension and moved on right before the championship.
Eh, he left because he wanted a chance to be The Guy. He got that opportunity in Detroit. Didn’t win but played well.

You gotta take your shots and I doubt he has too much regret over it.

Now he’s coming off the bench again and, surprise, he’s still really good. But allowed to score instead of being a defensive specialist.

See I think the other way. He has to have regrets. He would be very rich either way and he would have played in meaningful games, which he hasn't done since he left Denver.

He wanted more playing time and a different (scoring) role. He got that. Whether he regrets not competing for a championship depends on how important a championship is to him. I don’t know his feelings, but I have heard interviews with NBA players and former NBA players that make it seem somewhat common for players to be indifferent to winning titles.

He also apparently wanted to play for a Black coach in a city with a larger Black population. That was important to him.

I think fans overestimate the desire to win vs maximized earnings in pro sports. For most, the paycheck is the driving source, and winning is a by product of many different conditions of employment. The careers of the Jeremy Grants of the world will not be recalled by fans just because he happened to win a championship.

Denver was reportedly offering the same money as he signed for in Detroit. Honestly the careers of Jeremy types won't be remembered at all, for me I'd always be wondering about the ring.

The craziest part of the whole thing is Grant was taken two spots ahead of Jokic in the same draft.

Two of the best 2nd round picks of all-time.

Obviously the Joker is doing the majority of the work in that statement. Not to take anything away from our guy, of course.

That's so interesting in an era when even journeymen are making generational wealth. You would think the salary levels would allow players to chase titles more than in the past.

Ah, but see, that's not the meta game. The meta game for most is to maximize earnings. Relative value of the earnings doesn't matter.

Late stage capitalism blows, comrade.

Priorities shift... not always for the better.

To be fair, these players have a very limited time to make a ton of money.
They make more in a season than most on this board will make in their lives, and then have the ability to expand it through conservative investing. There's no NEED to chase max earnings for someone like Grant if other things like winning are a priority. But if maximizing earnings is what they want, have at it. The game is worse for it though.

I’ll take 25 million a year over a championship every day and twice on sundays. A championship is a nice story but that money sets your kids and your kids kids up for life

I guess my point is he could have had both. The Nuggets and Piston offer was the same. He wanted to be the man which is fine, but it wasn't economics or championship, it was alpha on a losing team or role player on championship team. He chose the prior which is fine but I'm my opinion there is no way he doesn't have regrets.

How much of a pay cut would he take to play for a contender? The league minimum for a a 10 year vet is 3+million. His most recent 5 year contract was guaranteed for 160 mil. Are you trying to say he wouldn't have made enough to set up his family for generations by settling for say 100 mil? 125 mil?

It's crazy how inconsistent Grant is. He'll score 30 pts one game, then 5 points the next, then 25, then 2. He's been a little more consistent this season. But definitely wouldn't place a prop bet on him before the game starts.
