Jesse Edwards: Timberwolves

WVU alumni Jesse Edwards with an NBA game under his belt!

He wanted less than the amount paid to Lampkin. People here claimed he was "overpaid" but the truth was he would have been worth every penny and that was clear as day in real time.

Move Justin Taylor to the bench, Maliq to his natural PF position and Jesse at C, and Red very well might have made the tournament. Would have made a difference in the amount of leash he's getting.

While I'm at it, I don't buy that his dad is some villain, despite the re-dealing that went down. The rabbit has the gun now, and there's no hunting regulations, so this is how it is now. Jesse said in an interview it seemed like Syracuse wasn't really into NIL. Seemed true to me at the time, and maybe now with all we know, more people will see his side.

The factor I think you are overlooking is that Red was new, and he was trying to implement a new culture.

His first act as CEO couldn't be to let someone renege on a deal that was agreed upon not once, but twice. That would establish Red as a sucker who could be taken advantage of. So he told them to pound salt.

I agree 100% that Jesse was 100% worth it. And that our approach cut off our nose to spite our face. But I understood why Red did what he did at the time -- and there is no bigger Jesse supporter on this forum than I was, dating back to when we signed him.

It was, and still is, all about the money for Dad and Jesse. And that's all I will say about it.
As compared to the rest of the college basketball standouts who play for the name on the front of the jersey and not the back (they don't)? Sadly, the old days are over.

Jesse was 23 years old when that all went down.

TWENTY THREE.

At that age his father can't make him do a thing.

My oldest is almost 22. If there was something she really wanted to do, that I was against, I'd expect her to tell me to go screw.
This is why I find it silly that his Dad gets all the blame. Jesse was 23. I think Jesse wanted the money but didn’t want to be the bad guy, so his Dad did what a good Dad would do and took the heat. Good dad, smart family.

I was frustrated about it, but SU deserves much of the blame. This is like a year after JB said NIL is 1st Team All ACC Buddy making 30k in commercial money, meanwhile SEC schools were starting to put together millions in collectives. It was clear as day what NIL was, but SU resisted and delayed, and as a result the fans have been punished.

This is a classic example of players following the money no matter the relationships. People who think otherwise are kidding themselves.

This is fair. I figured that’s what he was doing, but I thought it was a mistake at the time, and I think it’s a mistake now. And no matter what it will continue to happen (see Lampkin). But, I get why Red felt like he couldn’t get a reputation for that type of thing.

Jesse is a tremendous kid
As a fellow Dutchie who met with him the night before the Jan 21, 2023 game at GA Tech and had pictures taken with him after the game, I can tell you that he's a great guy.

I wished that he'd stayed at SU for the full ride.
I'll be rooting for him in the NBA, and the Dutch national team.
If he sticks around in the NBA and plays some games in Atlanta then I hope to see him again.

Go Orange (and Oranje)! :)

Whatever. He's an adult. Oh but he was so sad. Boo hoo.
I'm not crying for him, but not everyone's family dynamics are the same. I know young adults that struggle to break away from emotionally manipulative parents. I'm not claiming his dad is that, just that you don't know the dynamics. Clearly you raised your kid to be independent. Not everyone does.

It is what it is. I see it similar to when Melo didn't want to leave but it was clear he should. Ultimately, I hate the landscape, not the player.

I understand all of that. I just don't care that he was "gutted" to leave SU because Daddy told him to. If he was that upset then it was a wonderful opportunity to be an adult and make an adult choice. He didn't. He had every right to kowtow to Pops and leave, but I don't feel compelled to cheer on his NBA career.
