Jessie Edwards 4 pts / 4 to’s

Notice you didn’t reply that way to Jake’s post.
Jake did not say the Jessie never saw a double team in practice. Just said Jessie failed to recognize or react to it.

He looked unprepared for the double teams. UVA did a good job pushing him a step further than his comfort zone in the post. Then aggressively sending the double.

He has to recognize where the double is coming from and look to find the open man or just kicking it back out to reset.

The fact that the double came so early, he should have been able to make them pay.

He’ll see film on this and hopefully adjust. I don’t think our staff expected it or prepped him for it.
He tried to dribble away from it too which usually led too far under the basket which is never the spot to be.

Thanks for your scout of team practices. Anything else.
nope...just that he should try to practice against double teams even more than he already has. (if he has)

You would think with Hima guarding him in practice he would be a bit more crafty.

I love Jesse, but I wish he wouldn't always wait a few seconds before making his move and letting the double team come. There is a time for that, but there is also times when you need to just make a quick move and beat the double team.
I would also add that with the way Hima was playing tonight, I would have considered playing them together for a little and play Jesse at the 4. He's shown a decent mid-range shot (at least more than Malik and JBA).

Exactly. We should stop posting him. He's awful at it. The team is awful taking advantage of it. We need to stop.
He's not awful posting up. He makes some things happen there, scores some points. He's not adept yet at handling double teams every time.

I'd argue we need to feed him in the post more in the hopes it accelerates his development.

At this point how would it hurt playing them both? Rick Jackson never did anything outside the paint and played with AO.

To each his own. He hasn't shown any moves, footwork or go to shot, nor ability to pass. He's been in the program how long? Screen and roll.

I would say it's accurate that he doesn't have a go to move in the post, but I wouldn't say he hasn't shown any moves or footwork. It's not like he scores points on accident

He has shown some of this, the issue is that he needs room to do it. He isn’t crafty as someone said, he tries to spread out, doesn’t play well when confined, doubled or with a sagging defender bodying and fronting him while his own defender is bodying from behind. It’s probably why JB says that he prefers an outside scoring forward to spread out the defense, keep them honest, to give Jesse room to operate, as Jake noted. (Bell or Taylor vs Brown, Quadir) He can handle one on one defenses where he can use his length, his reach not his body, postup footwork, nor ball fakes to create his own space.

Which is crazy if true, because this friggin board was posting about how they’d surely double him.

Hes just not cut out to be the guy
He never was supposed to be, he wasn’t on the main IMG team and not ranked high out of HS, that said he turned out extremely well for us and on any normal team he would be fine, we’re expecting far too much from the kid. He plays on the 03 team and we may not lose a game. Jesse is a hell of a player.

Like I said early in the year, Jesse needs room to score. He has no body strength to have any kind of low post up game. He needs quick rolls to the basket and lobs for dunks. That’s his game. Without shooters surrounding him, he will struggle to score inside. He’s also non-aggressive. His defensive rebounding this year has been great. He’s a very good passer, but SU’s offense doesn’t take advantage of it. But then again, passing in this offense is not high on the list of must do’s.

Jesse is better in more unsettled situations. Agree that maybe we should not post him up in settled situations when he is playing like that.

The doubles were so obvious and early, he should have performed better against it.

He was a huge reason we lost last night. Average night from him and we are right in it.

Pretty frustrating to see that one pass to him that was a little wide and he misjudged it and the ball went out of bounds. Seemed to lack some effort. W Bennie out, you think he would have been more mentally into it.

I will again say that I would like to see him at the 4 w Hima at the 5 in situations. Only risk is foul trouble.

By the time he figured out that he needed to look for the open man 1st, it was the 4th qtr

I sometimes wonder how much scouting and film study our staff does. I heard 20plus say on a Dean podcast our scouting reports are about half the length and detail of opponents. Not sure how true that is but scary if true.

Personally I think we just watch the other team in warmups to see who looks like a shooter, who looks like they can dribble, who looks athletic, and who is tall. Like you would in Junior High.

What difference does it make, we’re going to do the same thing we always do when we start the game and then we’ll try to adjust if we’re losing.

Same with JG3. He’s the focal point on offense but he’s not cut out for this type of role. He should be a 6th man specialist shooter off the bench. Same with Chris Bell; he should be a designated shooter off the bench. He’s far to one dimensional and Benny should also be a bench player who provides energy and rebounding. This year’s team roster construction is a mess and this falls on JB and his recruiting.

Jesse has made nice progress at SU, but physical play/contact remains his kryptonite.

The more we keep shoving him down on the block and expecting him to cook, the more time we’re wasting.

You are exactly right in what he should be doing and who he is.
