In the post on the basketball board entitled "The Amazing Mr. Groat, Jim Brown's name came up as the ultimate multi-sport athlete and then as a figure who transformed his sport. I listed the all-time leading NFL rushers stats on a per game and per carry basis. I decided to re-post something I did a couple of years ago in which I summarized his career and then tried to identify the runs depicted in the various highlight films available on You-Tube. But it obviously belongs on the football board, not the basketball board.

Great runners have three distinct qualities: power, speed, elusiveness. Larry Csonka had power but not a lot of speed. John Riggings had power and a sprinter’s speed but he wasn’t elusive. Barry Sanders may have been the most elusive runner of all time but he wasn’t a power runner. Big Jim had it all. 68 of his touchdowns came from within five yards, including 29 when he went over from the one. But he also had 15 runs or receptions of over 50 yards:
