It really is pretty bad. He pretty much just runs over to his guy and throws his hand up half-heartedly as they are about to shoot.

That’s pretty much what zone D is: chase the ball, run to a spot and give the shooter a nice look at your armpit as they square up.

We've played man 90% of possessions and he's horrible at it. The BC and Wake games were prime examples.

He plays harder, but has zero idea what he's doing. He is worse than both at every metric that tracks defense.

If you watch him, he seems incapable of seeing the ball and his man at the same time. He just stares at his man with no regard for what else is going on on the court.

He’s turned his offense and shooting around to where he can be a consistent scorer since the start of conference play, but his defense is the worst on the team and it makes zero sense for his speed and quickness.

He has zero nose for getting rebounds or steals and he has a worse defensive rating than Jimmy Boeheim or Chris Bell had the past two seasons in conference play. It’s a huge problem because we are getting crushed off the dribble the past few games. It looks like he’s afraid of contact and afraid of the ball out there.

What's also weird is I thought he started the season rebounding well.

Stroooongly disagree. Dude is a traffic cone and all he has on Judah and Bell is that he maybe looks like he is trying harder. He moves around with his guy but accomplishes absolutely nothing. It is a nightmare to watch. Mintz is the best of those three.

I think JJ and Bell are neck and neck here, but JJ may actually be a worse defender only because he lacks the length Bell has to compensate. Judah’s not a plus defender by any means, but he’s passable.

On-ball defense in a matchup zone (no ‘hand-offs’ to a defender in an adjacent zone) and m2m is the same. Off-ball defense is where the philosophies differ.

No, everyone expected that to be a strong point. He’s got the athletic tools. It’s very befuddling to me.

JJ should be defending the 3 in a 3 guard lineup. Hopefully he can improve a ton there. Judah can defend well when he commits himself but all too often he over plays or just lets his man fly past him.

Part of Judah's problem is he needs to play it more conservative given the thin front court. He doesn't have an eraser behind him to clean it up.

True but even when he gives his man space.. he sets up in bad angles and doesn’t slide over quickly enough

I dont think Brey and his teams at ND were known for great M2M defense and now he is learning it from a 1st time coach who as an assistant coach for the last 12 years the program primarily focused on zone. AA might need more time in teaching the nuances.

m2m is a lot more complicated with its hedges and the various ways that pick-and-rolls can be played.

You still have to handle pick and rolls and hedges in a matchup zone. The primary defender still has to go over or under the screen or switch it. The secondary defender still has to hedge or handle the roller.

The difference is where the secondary defender comes from and how the other 3 defenders rotate/move.

The defensive rating stats are a little black boxy but they all tell the same story about his defense
